This beautiful tome is teaching mindfulness at its best. The main character wants to learn to do a cannonball but cannot find the courage. Until he discovers what the best sort of motivation can be. My PreKindergarteners laughed heartily at this sweet story and enjoyed the happy for now (HFN) ending.

My kids loved reading about the different types of dives into the pool and liked seeing the main character finally get in there and do the cannonball. There is a glossary at the end for the terms used throughout the book that is really helpful. After you read it a few times and start becoming more familiar with it, the book becomes more fun to read together. For me 5 stars would have meant being able to really enjoy it from the very first read and not needing a few rounds to appreciate it fully.

I loved this book. I didn’t know what it was about before I bought it either and I was pleasantly surprised it centered around Māori culture. My 5 year old loved it and I loved that it taught about other cultures and customs and even a couple Māori words. One reviewer wrote that the kid has to polish his nails and wear sparkly clothes to do the perfect cannonball and that is just not true. No where in the book does it say that. They must be talking about a different book because this one he just gets advice on what to do to make a bigger cannonball and it doesn’t talk about a sparkly speedo at all.

Author Sacha Cotter makes the perfect splash with this children's book, "Cannonball." The story centers over a young child learning how to do a cannonball into the water. He just can't seem to figure out how to do one and everyone around him seems to have different advice on the proper technique. Will he ever find the way to execute the perfect cannonball?

Our family loved this story! Our kids are little fish in the pool who enjoy jumping in and splashing just as much as the main character in this story. We enjoyed following along on his journey of self-discovery and loved that there was a life lesson to be found in the book along with the fun adventure. The illustrations were bright, colorful and engaging! Fun for all ages of readers, the ending of this book is endearing and inspiring! We loved it and can't wait to get our own copy!
