This comprehensive biography of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, covers his famous wartime stories as well as a private side of him that has rarely been explored

In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British "southern campaign." Employing insurgent guerrilla tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted enemy losses that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

Although many will remember the stirring adventures of the "Swamp Fox" from the Walt Disney television series of the late 1950s and the fictionalized Marion character played by Mel Gibson in the 2000 film
The Patriot, the real Francis Marion bore little resemblance to either of those caricatures. But his exploits were no less heroic as he succeeded, against all odds, in repeatedly foiling the highly trained, better-equipped forces arrayed against him.

In this action-packed biography we meet many colorful characters from the Revolution: Banastre Tarleton, the British cavalry officer who relentlessly pursued Marion over twenty-six miles of swamp, only to call off the chase and declare (per legend) that "the Devil himself could not catch this damned old fox," giving Marion his famous nickname; Thomas Sumter, the bold but rash patriot militia leader whom Marion detested; Lord Cornwallis, the imperious British commander who ordered the hanging of rebels and the destruction of their plantations; "Light-Horse Harry" Lee, the urbane young Continental cavalryman who helped Marion topple critical British outposts in South Carolina; but most of all Francis Marion himself, "the Washington of the South," a man of ruthless determination yet humane character, motivated by what his peers called "the purest patriotism."

In
The Swamp Fox, the first major biography of Marion in more than forty years, John Oller compiles striking evidence and brings together much recent learning to provide a fresh look both at Marion, the man, and how he helped save the American Revolution.

Abbeville Institute

Publishers Weekly

"A carefully researched account of the life of South Carolina militia general and guerilla leader Francis Marion, one of the American Revolution's most divisive and elusive figures. With an engaging narrative and a level of detail sure to delight many military historians and enthusiasts alike, Oller reconstructs Marion's participation in the Revolutionary War...A reconceptualization of Marion not as a mythological, virtuous American hero but as an astute student of war, one who understood the intricacies of waging a guerilla campaign against a superior force in a civilian community."--
H-Net.org

"Oller brings precise research (and no little courage) to the challenge of writing a realistic, accurate life of a partisan leader whose exploits have made him a centerpiece of American national mythology...A virtue of John Oller's new biography is his extensive use of Francis Marion's orderly book and other papers to glean interesting details about his day-to-day activities and operations. Swamp Fox will certainly attract a wide readership, especially among students and history buffs."--
Michigan War Studies Review

"Oller uses newly completed document collections...which were not available to previous biographers...Oller uncovers some interesting new information concerning Marion's years before the war...A good read."―
Journal of Southern History

John Oller, a lawyer, is the author of seven books, including "The Swamp Fox: How Francis Marion Saved the American Revolution" (Da Capo, 2016). His "American Queen: The Rise and Fall of Kate Chase Sprague—Civil War 'Belle of the North' and Gilded Age Woman of Scandal," was published by Da Capo in 2014. It has been praised by Pulitzer prize-winning author Debby Applegate as “a terrific work of historical research and reconstruction” which tells “the story of the Civil War and its scandalous aftermath—its assassinations, impeachments and sexual hijinks—from an entirely fresh perspective.” His first book, "Jean Arthur: The Actress Nobody Knew" (Limelight Editions, 1997), was lauded by film critic Leonard Maltin, who called it “an exceptional piece of work” and “an outstanding biography . . . among the best I’ve read in years.” A recent update to "Jean Arthur" can be found at John's website blog (www.johnollernyc.com), along with some new Kate Chase information.

Born in Huron, Ohio, John is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a B.A. in journalism (summa cum laude), having written and edited for the daily student newspaper, the Lantern, and interned as a reporter for such newspapers as the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Rochester Times-Union. His undercover exposé on the infiltration of the Ohio State campus by the “Moonies” religious cult led to his selection as a congressional journalism intern in Washington, D.C., where he wrote press releases for a Michigan congressman.

After college he obtained his law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. (magna cum laude), and joined the law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher in New York as an associate in the litigation department. For many years he represented Major League Baseball in many high-profile cases, including the celebrated George Brett “Pine Tar” case and the Pete Rose gambling case. As a partner in the firm, he went on to specialize in complex commercial and securities litigation, and was a principal author of the Audit Committee Report for Cendant Corporation (at the time, the most massive fraud in American corporate history); the New York Times called the report a definitive case study in the area of accounting irregularities and fraud. He taught legal writing as part of his firm’s continuing legal education program for many years, and is the author of "One Firm – A Short History of Willkie Farr & Gallagher, 1888 -- ". He holds the record as a four-time winner of the firm’s annual golf tournament in Florida.

At the end of 2011, John retired from active legal practice to concentrate on his writing career. Since then, in addition to "American Queen," he has published an e-book, "An All-American Murder," a true crime story of a murder in Columbus, Ohio in 1975. It led to the reopening and resolution of the 40-year-old "cold case." The book has been called “a tragic, fascinating story well-told,” and “an exceptionally well written, insightful look into the angst that people can carry for decades when the criminal justice system is unable/unwilling to provide closure.”

In 2019 came John's most book is about the early Wall Street lawyers during the Progressive Era. Entitled "White Shoe: How a New Breed of Wall Street Lawyers Changed Big Business--and the American Century," it was published by Dutton and was favorably reviewed by the Wall Street Journal.

His latest book: "Rogues' Gallery: The Birth of Modern Policing and Organized Crime in Gilded Age New York" was published by Dutton in September 2021. It also garnered a positive Wall Street Journal review among many others.

Next up: "Manhunters: How a Group of College Boys Turned FBI Agents Extinguished America's Greatest Public Enemies," scheduled for release in 2024 by Dutton.

John is a member of Biographers International Organization.

When not writing, John pursues his hobbies of golf, theater, film, and travel. He divides his time between New York City and a home in California wine country.

A great reading, informative, objective, even pleasant account of Marion's resistance and it's place within the broader context of the American Revolution.
Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2016
This is a fine biography of Fancis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." His irregular fighting against the British and loyalist forces in South Carolina was an important element in keeping an American military presence in the south. With other irregular units (e.g., Sumter and ), the4se patriots were able to take up some of the slack after Horatio Gates' crushing defeat at Camden. The American army had largely disappeared. Later, Nathanael Greene began to rebuild a force to obstructs Lord Cornwallis' efforts.

The book begins with the historical context for battle in the south. There is also a nice portrayal of Marion's youth. From his youth to adulthood, he finally created a life style that allowed him to live fairly well. When war came, he threw his lot in with the Americans. After the defeat of Gates' army, he and others began a hit and run guerilla warfare against the British. The work does a nice job of outlining his strategy, his realization that his troops would come and go as the season or some occasion called for such departure. He was also adept at finding "hideouts" and keeping them invisible (not always successful). He developed generally positive relations with nearby settlements.

He developed a useful working relationship with Greene and, thus, aided the larger military strategy of Greene. The book discusses ups and downs of Marion's military career, a few failures as well as his many successes.

In the final analysis, this is a satisfying work on "the Swamp Fox," including a nice analysis of his live after the Revolutionary War. . . .

Details Frances Marion's early life, his military career (especially his time as a partisan leader in South Carolina) and his personal and political life after the Revolutionary War. Several of Marion's adversaries are covered in great detail.
I was not aware of how many battles during the Revolution were fought in South Carolina until I read this book. It brings to life just how much the fighting in South Carolina was more of a civil war between Americans fighting each other. It was a bare knuckle brawl between Loyalists and Patriots to say the least. What we would consider war crimes today were done by both sides! If that offends your preconceived ideas of the Americans in the Revolution, don't read this book. General Marion managed to stay above that, severely disciplining his subordinates when needed.
This is not Walt Disney's "Swamp Fox" nor is it Mel Gibson's "The Patriot". Marion understood "partisan warfare". It is almost like he wrote the blueprint for Special Operations behind enemy lines. Wearing down a superior enemy by a 1000 cuts. He chose his battles carefully and did not recklessly throw away the lives of the men under his command.
The author also provides details on Marion's contemporaries such as General Thomas Sumter, how their tactics differed and their geographical areas of operation within South Carolina. It closes with his marriage and life after the war.
There are numerous references for each chapter. It is and interesting and well written history on a Patriot who does not always get the credit he deserves for his service.

It seems the most difficult task for a historian is to be well-researched, detailed, and also engaging. This book does not disappoint. I learned a lot. If you are a student of the American Revolution, I recommend it.

The Swamp Fox: How Francis Marion Saved the American Revolution
I personally found this book to be extremely entertaining. For me it would have been helpful to have maps which describes where these battles took place. I spent a lot of time doing internet searches so I could keep up. Even that was difficult because so many of the locations are now covered by Lake Marion. The author took a dim view of all other officers from our revolution in the south including Nathaniel Greene. This was confusing to me but I will say, half of this book is references so I assume the author is quite accurate in his conclusions and presentation.

What fascinated me was the paradoxical events of war for the times. At one point the most horrendous of war crimes imaginable were dealt out from both the patriots and the British. Then in another moment official complaints were filed and paroles were granted with the promise to not rage war again and no punishment was given. Sometimes these pledges were kept and other times they were not. I had never envisioned that the revolution was not only a rebellion against Great Britain, but also a very civil war with our own citizens. It was fascinating to learn about the differences between the Continental Army and the Militia. The Army consisted of enlisted soldiers with the promise to be paid at some point. The militia were men who volunteered when they had time away form there plantations and farms. Both the Militia, Wigs and Tories switched sides regularly and seemed to just sort of go with the flow of whoever seemed to be winning at the time. All of the changes from one side to the next were just a matter of course, but I am not sure how a leader could ever trust his men when going into battle. Often he learned the hard!

I would have certainly rated this book much higher if I knew where the locations were that the author described. I just found it difficult to follow and that's not the author's fault for sure. It is more my fault for not really being knowledgeable of South Carolina.
