What kind of impact does a battle and siege from more than 200 years ago have on the world today? Yorktown held the key to the end of the American Revolution and allowed America to become not only a sovereign nation, but also set the stage for it to become a world power, worth keeping an eye on.

Inside you will read about...

✓ The Troops in Motion
✓ The Battle at Sea
✓ The Calm Before the Storm
✓ The Siege Commences
✓ The Fall

When Washington moved against Cornwallis, the entire world held its breath. And when surrender was offered – first to the French – things could have ended very differently. One city. One long siege in the fall of the year – would change everything.

This is the first I’ve read about the Yorktown battle so I can’t comment on the accuracy of the account, but I enjoyed the read and felt I learned something. It was concise and to the point. I appreciate the lack of fluff and detail. The people involved came across as real people, not villains and heroes. I felt the elation and suffering. Well done Mr. Freeman.

For someone who has not had American history in school and living in Europe this book was fascinating.
For American it is important history.
It gives you a good insight and is worth a read and it is a nice and easy read.

i was interested to read about the battle of Yorktown, did a search and imagine finding this book devoted to this subject - and free! It was an enjoyable read, and satisfied my curiosity. If I were to be critical at all, I think the book needed further review. For example, there are parts that needed a little explaining or rewording. I would have been happy to do that! If the author reads this review and wants some help, I'm offering! Thanks for the book, very grateful you wrote it.

While a decent history of the American Revolution might give you five or six pages on the Battle of Yorktown, this treatment, one of many short histories by Henry Freeman, presents ten times as much. That is about the length of a serious encyclopedia article (I am about to wax sentimental), though not a full length history. And that is okay. Not many of us are that into this particular battle, but do welcome a more detailed account than is commonly provided in standard histories of the Revolution itself.

This kind of material, for better or worse, is a product of the digital age. It is not as original or scholarly as to be printed in a journal; it could be accompanied by pictures, maps, and documents and become like one of those Junior High histories (think of the old American Heritage series) where the narrative is almost secondary to the pictures. Nor is it fictionalized into a day to day account of Washington's days leading up to the victory with detailed description of his breakfast on the morning of. It is a straightforward, fairly balanced account of the developments that led to what turned out to be the last straw for the English who realized that fighting fellow Englishmen in the colonies was a losing proposition.

What I found here that I had not read elsewhere was the account of the diplomatic developments regarding France's support of the Colonists' efforts and the orders and decisions of the French officers which led to the rare occurrence of the British Navy being outfaced and forced to withdraw, leaving Cornwallis to his fate.

Washington receives the credit for recognizing the possibilities of the situation and committing enough of his resources to box Cornwallis in. He was a leader of men more than a tactician but showing up at the right place at the right time is the secret to victory. This battle serves as a kind of bookend to his first victory at the siege of Boston eight years earlier.

I suppose the comparison with the History Channel is a low bar, but if you want facts as opposed dramatic music and questionable reenactment, this is the superior choice.

This reads more like a chapter from a secondary level text book. It avoids any in depth examination of even key personalities of the subject.

Fast paced written story telling of the end of the Revolutionary War. Minor typos in a few places, but provides interesting perspectives that are rarely covered. Overall, well worth the reading. The Revolutionary War is given scant coverage in many history classes. But it is a story well worth knowing. This book is a good intro to the end days of the American Revolutionary War. Highly recommended.

I read this book following reading "1776." It finished the war for me. There is much detail in the brief account and is well written. As a retired history teacher and visitor to the Yorktown battlefield I enjoyed it.

Purchased the audible version and listened to it during our drive to tour the Yorktown battlefield. My 10-year-old grandson was enthralled with the narrative, and I think he better understood the significance of the battlefield and museum during our visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, facts instead of myths!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 4, 2019
At last I have found an American perspective based on fact rather than the usual myth and legend. We are usually fed fictions such as Paul Revere's "ride" for example, or British soldiers are portrayed as evil "Nazi" types, or King George III as a tyrant when he was in fact a much loved constitutional monarch affectionately known as "Farmer George" by the British people.

What is ironic is that America was help into existence by a French King who was an Absolute monarch, and very much a tyrant. So much so that he was guillotined by his own people a few years later!

One final thought. Americans do not seem to grasp the difference between England/English and Britain/British or United Kingdom. Being English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish (now Northern Irish) is an ethnic identity. Collectively we are all British. It is not correct to refer to England or English in the context of this work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Factual Account of the Siege of Yorktown

As someone who enjoys historical fiction, concise factual accounts of key events and battles are also of interest. This is a useful account of the final action in the American War of Independence. If you've watched The Patriot, you should read this.
