AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“Poised and chilling.” —Wall Street Journal

“No-one does suburban paranoia like Shari Lapena—this slowly unfurling nightmare will have you biting your nails until the end.” Ruth Ware

Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and Not a Happy Family

Maybe you don't know your neighbors as well as you thought you did . . .

"This is a very difficult letter to write. I hope you will not hate us too much. . . My son broke into your home recently while you were out."

In a quiet, leafy suburb in upstate New York, a teenager has been sneaking into houses--and into the owners' computers as well--learning their secrets, and maybe sharing some of them, too.

Who is he, and what might he have uncovered? After two anonymous letters are received, whispers start to circulate, and suspicion mounts. And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their own secrets?

In this neighborhood, it's not just the husbands and wives who play games. Here, everyone in the family has something to hide . . .

You never really know what people are capable of.

I haven’t read the book yet. Waiting on a replacement so I will not rate this to harshly. My rating is on the quality of the book. As you can see some of the chapters were printed upside down. No quality check done at all. I read a few reviews and apparently this happens with this author books. However, I recently order two books and they seem fine. Maybe it’s for this title where the issue is.I’m gonna give the story a chance. Like they say “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” in this case the “prints”.

I have to say I could not put this book down! It is a who done it but it is so well done! I have never read this author before but I can tell you I will be reading more from her!

The book is about a murder in the neighborhood. The author takes us through several different people and perspectives. I was sure I knew who it was but it wasn’t who I thought. I did figure it out before the end but it was still a great read.

I think and hope there may be a follow up to tie up some loose ends. Really suspenseful read that I highly recommend. You will find it hard to put this book down!

One of my favorite mystery authors of all time. I love her different viewpoints and perspectives to keep the reader guessing who the culprit is. It was a very fast read - I read it in two days. It's not my favorite Shari Lapena book, but it still has everything you're looking for in her novels. Plenty of twists to keep you turning every page! I will ALWAYS recommend her novels!

Another bland, kinda, thriller where you either dislike every character or outright hate them. Not a single person in this book to pull for. How many people in one neighborhood can be having an affair with the same woman before it becomes totally unbelievable? It is totally unbelievable.

It's a neighborhood full of ignorant people - who, without fail, lie to the police for no good reason. The killer, of course has a reason to lie, but why does everyone else lie, even the most innocent of them? This killer doesn't need to lie because he's never interviewed.

Like so many poorly executed books, the killer is the least developed character. The least likely character. How many writers use this tired, completely worn out theme? It's old and annoying, stop it!

And then, as though the writer is having some fun with you - if you do manage to make it to the end - she intentionally leaves you in the dark about a few important "loose ends". Just tell me the end - the whole end - I don't read these books so I can finish writing the book for you Ms. Lapena - just tell me!

The best part of this book, by far was, unfortunately, the synopsis on the back.

I really loved reading this 4 star thriller, it had more twists and turns than a mountain road.

SUMMARY
Young, beautiful Amanda Pierce has disappeared. Her husband, Robert, reported her missing when she didn't return home after a weekend shopping trip with her BFF. But... the police and most of the neighbors were not particularly worried. It turns out she lied, she had never planned to go on this shopping trip, leaving everyone to assume she left her husband and marriage on her own free will. In fact, the police outrightly told Robert that they would not actively search for her.

But, when her car is found submerged in a lake with her body in the trunk, the police suddenly become very interested. Obviously, Robert is a person of interest. But the plot thickens when the police start to dig a little deeper into her personal life and realize there is at least one man besides Robert with whom she is involved.

The majority of the book is set in Amanda and Robert's neighborhood and told in 3rd person from the point of view of Richard and various neighbors. Although the neighborhood seems quite and very pleasant; there is a LOT going on below the surface... a hacker breaking into homes, cheating spouses, drunken teenagers and very nosey neighbors. Could the murderer be one of the people in this close knit neighborhood? It's so darn fun figuring all that out!

WHAT I LOVED
From the first page of the book, it became clear that almost all the characters have their own secrets, secrets they would do almost anything to protect. It was so intriguing.

Each character seemed like a potential suspect at various points throughout the story. I'd like to say I figured out the ending pretty early on but NOPE! I never actually figured it out until it was explained in detail at the end the book.

There was so much going on in this neighborhood. I loved it. It was a little Desperate Housewives -ish.

This story explores the concept of how far a person will go to protect someone they love and how little people may actually know about the people they feel closest to. How far would a parent go to protect their child, how far husbands or wifes would go to protect each other and how far a person is willing to push their moral limits to protect that person.

Throughout the book, there were several big reveals centering around people's involvement with Amanda and Richard Pierce. It made me wonder how many of those things would have happened if Amanda and Richard had moved to a different neighborhood. In other words, would the cheater / cheaters eventually have cheated on their spouse if the Pierces had not moved into the neighborhood. Did they always have it within them or was that behavior brought out due to circumstances. Deep thoughts...

WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE</b
I loved many things about this book, but if I'm being critical, which I usually am, some parts were a little much. For example, I prefer to believe that cheating, lying and murder are not as wide spread in real life as they are in this book.

OVERALL
This was a fun book to read. The suspense was the best part.
