I Am Persuaded: Christian Leadership As Taught By Jesus Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

“This stuff is pure gold! It is potential dynamite to the status quo of church as we know it—exactly the church as we know it that Brenneman urges us to consider ‘letting go’ of in order to follow Jesus into Church as God desires it.”

"I had personal experience in planting the Church in absolutely virgin soil in Outer Mongolia in the early 1990s. The entire story is in my book: ‘There’s a Sheep in my Bathtub: Birth of a Mongolian Church Planting Movement.’ Our church planting team worked very hard to leave the ‘heavy package’ of Westernized institutional church at home and use the New Testament as a filter for practices we introduced among the Mongolians. We were largely successful and were led by the Spirit into a number of the concepts found within Brenneman’s book. I would, however, have considered ‘I Am Persuaded’ an absolute treasure had it been available at the time."

"After the abuses of the Shepherding Movement in the 1970s, many Christian leaders flinch at the topic of authority and submission, and rightly so! On the other end of the spectrum, there are leaders still writing and espousing false teachings about being 'Under Cover,' and the concept of ‘Spiritual Authority’ is heralded as a hierarchical structure that God ordained.

Jonathan Brenneman has added wisdom to this confused realm of pain and abuse. He clears the undergrowth of brush and chaos with his refreshing perspective in his book, ‘I Am Persuaded’. As you take the time to digest this book, allow yourself to see Jesus’ leadership style through new eyes.”

“Jonathan Brenneman in his ‘I Am Persuaded’ provokes, jabs and challenges our sacred cows of church leadership. Yet, the jabs are not hurtful because they come from Scripture. This is not a reactionary book filled with leader bashing but a graceful and excellent presentation of mostly forgotten principles concerning how Jesus and the early church taught and practiced leadership.

All the key and at times controversial words are discussed: rule, obey, submission, apostles, authority, and spiritual covering. Excellent exegesis on these words is provided and is foundational to the author’s conclusions. If you find yourself disagreeing, then, by all means, do a better exegesis. I think that will be difficult. Jonathan Brenneman has personally made a paradigm shift in his life and shares it with us. Will you?

'I Am Persuaded' is more than a fine Bible study, it is filled with real life stories which illustrate servant leadership. It is well written, fast paced, and provokes fresh thinking. I believe the reader and the church will be healthier when these principles are put into practice. Will you be persuaded? Will you undergo a paradigm shift? Read and find out. This is a good book and its message needs to be heard.”

About the Author

Jonathan Brenneman was born in Rochester, New York and raised in Pennsylvania. Although a very troubled child, he was at the same time very religious. He read the Bible from cover to cover when he was seven years old, all the while questioning and wondering about the existence of God.
When Jonathan was nine years old, he woke up one morning with bad back pain. His mother prayed for him, and to his surprise, he felt something like a hot ball of energy rolling up and down inside his back, and the pain melted away. It was shocking to say the least, but it convinced him God did exist! He later told his friends, "I know that God is real. I felt his hand on my back."
In spite of this experience, Jonathan still had no peace. He prayed the "sinner's prayer" but with no change until two years later when he had a "born again" experience. It felt like heaven opened and unexplainable joy and peace descended upon him! He was different, and knew it! The things he had felt so guilty about that he tried unsuccessfully to change, were simply gone.
After this time, Jonathan dedicated his life to the Lord as a missionary, going on his first mission trip at age fourteen. As a teenager and young adult he continued to travel and learn languages. Then, in a time of desperation when he was twenty years old, Jonathan went to a Christian conference where the Lord touched and encouraged him. It was the start of a supernatural lifestyle and growing in spiritual gifts, during which time many amazing miracles and healings began to happen.
Jonathan worked in construction, but in between jobs he began to visit churches in the United States and Canada as well as in Latin America and Eastern Europe. Jonathan has encouraged the believers, shared testimonies, and spoken with unbelievers and prayed for them. He's also worked with children and seniors. Jonathan believes it's a wonderful and tremendous privilege to be able to serve the people for whom Jesus gave his life.
Jonathan is now a missionary in Rio de Janeiro Brazil with his wife Elizabeth, and daughter Rebekah. He loves people, enjoys being with them, and rejoices at seeing what the Holy Spirit does in their lives. He likes to minister in the role of teaching, laying hands on the sick, visiting the elderly, and working with children-always loving them so they in turn will learn to love others with the love of God.

We are so apt to take so many things for granted, including ideas and cultural conceptions we are simply accustomed to, that it's difficult to stand back and discern any deception we are immersed in. It is often needful for someone to arouse us to clear out the cobwebs out of our perspectives and see things in the light of truth. Jonathan does just that in this definitive take on what our place in the body of Christ is, as opposed to what the institutional church has so long conveyed.

We are all members of Christ's body and one spirit with Him who is our federal head. We are all servants who are to honor one another and build one another up in love. The truth of this defies a heirarchical authoritative structure that sets one brother or sister above the other in a position of domination. In his own humble and precise style, Jonathan carefully examines the language and its intent in the New Testament that decries the idea of dominating positions. He does this without abuse or ridicule, and moreover, he points the way to a truer brotherhood and unity in the body by describing the relationship Jesus and the New Testament writers actually teach and exemplify.

This is an important read for anyone struggling with their identity and place in Christ or desiring to teach a more perfect way.

I commend Jonathan for writing a book which systematically dismantles one of the greatest misconceptions in the church today— ecclesiastical authority. The material found within the pages of this motif not only challenges the mindsets of religious traditions of men, but also lays a biblical foundation for true authentic leadership, using Jesus Christ as our model and personal example for leading/ serving others. At a time when progressive truth is breaking forth in many different aspects of the gospel of the kingdom, such as abundant grace, divine healing, and the fullness of who Christ is in every believer, it’s no surprise that the Holy Spirit has spoken so clearly through Jonathan in an effort to declare truth in love to the body of Christ concerning godly authority. It’s my honor and privilege to endorse this work of progressive truth. I trust, like a clarion sound, it’ll provoke change in the hearts of leaders as deep calls out to deep, challenging leaders to change through revealing the simple truths of the gospel.

This is a good book for those looking to go deeper than the superficial and status quo. This author shows the actual interpretations of the Greek and Hebrew that have been altered to fit a preconceived notion from a culture of hierarchy . A must read for those who desire to truly follow Jesus.

Revolutionary interpretation. Goes against centuries of thought that sees all of humanity (and especially Christians) as needing pyramidal hierarchies of power controlling them, as apparently supported by the Bible. Instead, Jonathan Brenneman presents an exciting and intriguing picture of an ekklesia unencumbered by the weight of a heavy hierarchy overhead. The main problem with this view is that it might cause the ekklesia to become dangerously empowered, possibly even to the point where people feel free go out and change the world just because God called them to do it.

Combine these ideas with Pastor Greg Simas' sermons on what ekklesia really is, and things might really get wild!

The only "missing" area I wish this book could have discussed is the continuing debate about women in the ekklesia.

Jonathan Brenneman does and excellent job explaining leadership from the perspective that Jesus taught us to lead. He systematically presents life giving principles that Jesus taught the disciples; both positive and negative. For example, "He who would be great,..." and "It must not be so among you...". Jonathan also showed how words were misinterpreted to support a hierarchy that is not supported in the Kingdom. Chapter 4 was one of the best discussions about "Positions in the Church and Leadership Roles". The understanding of true apostles in that day should help us understand the value of true servants today. Another very beneficial discussion Jonathan presents is the one about the object of our obedience. If you properly understand this one issue, the truth will free you from much conflict in your spiritual life as well as in your temporal affairs because your understanding will be enlightened.

This is the best book I have ever read on the topic of church leadership. It touches on so many things I was already questioning in regards to church hierarchy and rules of men. I found it beautifully comforting as I was even in tears at the end of the book when I read the testimonies in the final chapter. As my husband and I have struggled to even find out place in the "church" and quite honestly over the years have often felt we were rejected by the "church" for just seeking to have integrity and obey Jesus regardless of the cost, it is great to see we are not alone. Thank you Jonathan Brenneman for going "against the flow" as well.

Jonathan has written an easy to read, Biblically sound book that will cause a paradigm shift in your thinking about leadership and "spiritual fathers".
If you have been struggling with how you should relate to "leaders" or "spiritual fathers/mothers" this book will give you a strong biblical foundation to enable you to be where Christ Jesus wants you to in relation to His body.
Read it asking the Holy Spirit to let you see truth and what is not truth.
You will need an ability to think beyond what has been spoon fed and examine the scriptures for yourself along with Jonathan as he takes you along on his journey of discovery of Christian leadership as taught by Jesus.
I want to read and re-read until I fully grasp these solid biblical truths that defy many traditions.

I read this book last year and I found it very helpful: I am very grateful that Jonathan published it. The Holy Spirit taught me and opened my eyes to the beautiful, simple truth as I read it. Wielding the sword of the Spirit, the word of God, Jonathan tore down a number of "high things that exalt [themselves] against the knowledge of God" (2 Cor 10:5) - carnal doctrines of leadership, in particular, that have infected God's family over the centuries and persist today, and he cast a vision of the body of Christ functioning as Jesus intended. Beautiful!

There were many great aspects, but the stark reality of Christ's servant leadership; the description of true apostleship; the functioning of the body of Christ in direct relationship to the Head; and the roles of a multiplicity of teachers and pastors/shepherds in a believer's life, were stand-out points. Jonathan absolutely demolished the concept of hierarchical leadership in Christ's church, basing his teaching firmly in that of Jesus and demonstrating how the whole New Testament conforms to the words of Christ.

There were two minor negative issues for me, personally: the pace was sometimes a bit slow and the style a bit laborious (with quite a bit of recapping) but I appreciate that some readers will be glad of that. I, who am a slow (and careful) reader, found it difficult. The second was that I would have preferred Bible quotations in a modern English (formal equivalence) translation rather than the C17th KJV (and there are a LOT of Bible quotations - which is a good thing in my view!) I understand that for an American readership, where many Christians put great stock in the superiority of that now archaic English version, this may have been a good choice.

However, these two things do not in any way dent my very high opinion of 'I am Persuaded': one of the best teaching books that I have read in recent years. It is a subject that is very close to my heart - one that God has been teaching me about for years and this book was a gift from God. I love the honesty, grace and humility that are evident in Jonathan's writing and I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

A powerful, well written understanding of the word of God through a thorough look at the Greek translation first and showing the true meaning giving incite to those scriptures that seem to contradict the words of the Lord Jesus. You must read this book and then read it again.
