5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

No single soul on this planet is fortunate enough to have smooth sailing when it comes to dealing with life challenges. Everyone has to go through the twists and turns of life while keeping their sanity intact and growing as a person. However, the journey becomes much more challenging if you have to cope with health complications as well.

Coping and Thriving with a Chronic Condition is a guidebook for people who are suffering from a chronic disease. This book not only discusses the difficulties such patients face to assure them that they are not alone in their journey but also presents ways to ease their suffering and eventually thrive while living with a chronic condition. It also aims to help without a chronic condition learn more about the challenges of living with a life-long health condition so they can empathize with such patients.

Carla was born with a condition called Arthrogryposis that affects her limbs and causes chronic pain and arthritis as an adult. Coping and Thriving with a Chronic Condition is her debut book. Despite her diseases, she is a non-fiction medical writer and pharmacist. She graduated from Bowie Stat University (Biology) and University of Maryland (PharmD). Much of her career was spent in Texas (an honorary southern belle) working as a pharmacist and fostering open and honest communication with patients with chronic illnesses and their concerns. She desired to give solutions and suggestions to their concerns from her experience and current research. Carla is devoted to her faith and spirituality. She resides in Baltimore MD but travels to Washington, DC and Northern, VA for family and writing events. Her hobbies include jazz, poetry, swimming, and adaptive horse riding.

Top review from the United States

This was a well-researched, easy-to-read book. Living with a chronic condition myself, I knew I was curious to see what Cobbs would bring to the table. I'm no stranger to self-help books geared towards people with chronic illnesses, and they tend to fall into two categories - ones that clearly have no idea what they're talking about, and ones that understand the more common experiences. Cobbs's own personal experiences dealing with her own chronic illness clearly helped make this book relatable and accessible. Although it could easily help those living with a chronic condition feel less alone, I think the most good would lie in caregivers, loved ones, and medical professionals reading this to help them gain a little more understanding, especially because there are citations to sources and studies throughout the book, so it can't be dismissed as an emotional memoir of one person's experiences.
