Great device -- But show mode doesn't equal show.

Great device -- But show mode doesn't equal show.
I already own a Fire 10" tablet, but I wasn't using it as often as thought I would. It was usually dead when I wanted to use it but didn't feel like keeping it constantly charged. Problem solved -- with several very neat extras. The PROs: It costs less than a Show, duh! It's a whole lot larger than a show. (Download the Alexa skill - Aquarium screensaver without sound. It is just BEAUTIFUL!.) You can have Alexa report the weather. You can have Alexa turn on the lights. You can have Alexa tell you the formula for the volume of a sphere. (Really cool!) The CONs: It doesn't make or give reminders. Ouch! That's disappointing. Although you can play music, the sound is even worse than the Dot. BIG BUT -- you can hide a nice Bose portable speaker behind the unit and it's beautiful. I just installed a Blink video camera security system -- AN AMAZON COMPANY. I can see the Front Door on my SHOW, but not on this Show MODE. At least not yet. That would have been nice. I'm being picky now, but look at the picture. The temperature runs just slightly into the time. A slight adjustment from the Amazon engineers will take care of that - soon. Altogether, 4 stars.

This is a handsome docking station and is aesthetically a lot more pleasing than just using a normal tablet stand. I feel like it's a bit overpriced for what it is though. It has some issues such as it not being very child or pet friendly. It wouldn't take much to knock the case out of the dock since there isn't anything locking it in. I also felt they should have made this work for both the 8 and the 10. If you can't just get an 8 tray and use it with the 10 dock, then I would give it 2 stars. Show Mode needs work and I don't feel like they tested it much. I have my display speed on Fast and clock on for when it's inactive, but it just sits there on the same photo endlessly and doesn't change the screen unless I ask it something, and I've only gotten the clock to come up twice. The rest of the time I have to exit out of Show Mode eventually and just let the lock/home screens turn it off after a minute. Hopefully they will do an update soon and fix this problem. They also need to put In some kind of sleep mode (Alexa, sleep) so you can shut it down without the clock being on when it's inactive. I do like that it speaks some Klingon though! :P That's the Trekie in me. How about some Vulcan too!

Update: I’ve had it for a couple of months and I’m upgrading it from a 3 to a 5. My orginal issues were with my fire 10. Either it has a hardware issue or the show mode download was faulty. Once I switched to my other fire 10, all my problems disappeared. It actually works better with my pets than a normal tablet stand. They tend to leave this stand alone. I still think it’s a bit overpriced though, but all in all I’m happy with the purchase.

This is actually a great idea with a lot of potential if done right. However, the decision to go with a proprietary connection really puts you in a situation where you either love or hate the device based on whether you want to use it the way they want you to or not.

As a stand it's actually very nice. It is freely adjustable with a good range of adjustment. It's very solid and stable and feels high quality. I actually use it more as a stand (whether for my fire 8 tablets or other tablets/phones/devices) than as a charging dock.

The case is decent as well giving fairly good back/side protection (really no front protection at all though), feels nice and solid, and the connection to the usb port is designed very well.
The back connector points are decent as well with the exception of lining it up with the stand a bit fiddly.

The show mode functionality needs real work, there's serious performance issues and the speakers on the fire 8's really don't meet the volume or quality needed for this to be every day usable. The tablet screen also will want to just always be on annoyingly. Even if you disable show mode and turn off the screen it will turn back on on it's own, making this an annoying thing to have on your nightstand, for that you're better off getting an echo spot or the newer smaller echo show. This functionality of the device is incredibly disappointing to the point that the title of the product (SHOW MODE dock...) a very poor name since people will be buying it for it's weakest feature.

If this were primarily sold (and appropriately priced) as a stand and/or dock I think it would be much better received.

Now I COULD see this as being a great product for someone who does most of their "computing" on their tablet, and also spends a lot of time doing work that would make use of the show mode (while having their hands occupied), such as the stereotypical "house-wife", but that would in my opinion make this product only really desirable for a 10 inch tablet (which of course why would you buy this version instead?).

It's nice that you can buy extra cases for multiple Fire HD tablets, but that brings me to what could and should have been something that saved this product from it's shortcomings.
The stand works ONLY with the 2 cases (1 for each size 8hd, and 10hd). No other cases will connect to the dock, because amazon has not made any and it is a proprietary connector so neither has anyone else. This is further salt on the wound because the cases offer no alternate style. There is only one material, one color, and one formfactor. If you like flip/folio covers then too bad. Like the color blue? Too bad. Like a more grippy cloth or silicone texture? Too bad.

If Amazon decides to consider the shortcoming of this product and/or potential features (connect to external speakers when docked) then the future of this as a line of products could be great. But with it's limited, and especially poor functioning, features it just comes across as a stinker of a product that desperately needs a price drop.

This item worked perfectly right out of the box. Easy installation, easy setup, and was quickly using the unit. Tablet has become more useful with this protective, and display-worthy case. One small detail though, if you plan on accessing the SDHC Card Slot, you can't access it with the tablet in this case. When I purchased this protective case, my thought was to keep the tablet protected all the time, especially not having to plug and unplug the very delicate charging plug. Since I use the SDHC Card for loading music and episode shows, access to the slot is vital. This protective case does not have a way to get to the slot unless you take the case off. If you are not using the tablet as I am, and have a static SDHC card, or do not need to have access to the slot, this case is perfect. But, if you do, like me, the case becomes another "layer" that needs to be removed to gain access to it. Other than this "small detail", the case is perfect.

I love how inexpensive fire tablets are compared to others. But they are slow and we only use ours for media consumption and a Fotoo app digital picture frame (dfp).

First, My kids stopped using amazon anything once the FreeTime ran out. So we got them androids and reset the fires tablets but don’t like using it for anything more than media consumption and DFP.

Next, show mode on the 7th generation is quite slow so we turned it off. we loaded fotoo app and a ftp server app to make it a digital picture frame. It is literally cheaper than a DPF and you can use it as media consumption. A cheap micro usb works also for DPF functionality in fotoo.

Last, the show dock itself... I liked the idea of these but they are expensive. Show mode does turn off, not always at 30 minutes but around that but I wasn’t tracking it to close. But with show mode off and fotoo running at full brightness the dock keeps it charged at 100% all the time and the fotoo autostart on charging kicks in 9/10 time. And if we need it for quick search or watch a show it comes off fast and sets back in fast and easy.

I would recommend this if you have an 8 in 7th generation but only at a discount you are comfortable paying because at best you will get $10 for your trade in.
