Interview with the author:

So what makes MODERN MYTHMAKERS so special?

Michael McCarty: Although there are celebrities and famous people interviewed in the book (such as Elvira, Ray Bradbury, Dean Koontz, H.G. Lewis, Richard Matheson, John Carpenter, John Saul, Joe McKinney, Peter Straub, Linnea Quigley, Laurell K. Hamilton, Adrienne Barbeau, Christopher Moore and more), this isn't a book of celebrity interviews. It is a book about the art and craft of writing horror and science fiction. It is also the same for the film business of the same genres. We got down to the bare bones of the book and film business with people who have mastered their craft and enjoy sharing their knowledge in the book.

Why should readers give MODERN MYTHMAKERS a try?

Michael McCarty: The book is bursting at the seams with great interviews. You'll walk away knowing more about the interviewees but also about the horror and science fiction publishing and film industry.

Which interview did you enjoy the most and why?

Michael McCarty: I get asked that often and it is a hard question to answer. I had done over 150 interviews with some of the top names in horror and science fiction and I pared down all these interviews to the crème de la crème for this book. Of all the interviews in the book, the interview with Ray Bradbury is the one I enjoyed doing the most because I did the interview with all my heart, and surprising, Ray Bradbury did, too.

I would put it as a parallel in purpose with Stephen King's, On Writing.

Small spoiler: Douglas Adams can't find a towel - I don't think I will ever forget that!

I was impressed with Michael McCarty's knowledge, insights [mind-blowing!!!] and the fun that was evident during the interviews --- I'm actually torn between how jealous I am that he got to do the interviews and how astonished I am with the breadth and depth of his interviews. Modern Mythmakers is a backstage pass to authors, script writers, producers, directors, and actors - legends.

I had a rare suspicion I was going to want to reread it, so I decided to not grab my traditional red pen for annotating - But I became a bit excited and did my ultimate taboo of dog-earing pages. And well, I would say, under maximum restraint, I have made about forty of those detestable little buggers

Odd - I now kinda feel relieved of the responsibility to write a magna opus out the gate. Rather, I feel excited to continue writing my “million words of crap.” Perhaps I'll find a plot to be teased out to a novelette...But for now I do feel reinvigorated with the glee I had writing scenes and short stories...This time I am back to write for fun – and thank you for the serotonin.

If you've done a bit of due diligence you're aware of the awards that place Michael McCarty solidly in that group of ...Ah crud! I don't have a word better than the "professionals," save on the list of eventually being awarded that elite...there it is the word I was looking for "elite"...and I was headed towards saying, being declared a Grand-master!

MM clearly has a timelessness to it. Something about it felt like I was sitting at a round banquet table as the participants are mingling before an awards ceremony. On this, I think his friend The Amazing Kreskin has written succinctly in the afterword. I will just echo, in deed ”the friends we keep.”

For aspiring authors and hobbyist scribblers - there is a bounty of iridescent pearls from the professionals to be gleaned - for that I am truly appreciative!

MM also has that rare quality of "inspiring the muse." when the muse seems to be AWOL. It's a treasure I will REREAD, which is something I hate to do. But there was so much there that I was not aware of, and it really has that precious advantage that I imagine going to a premier writers workshop facilitates (for example Clarion). I would be immensely appreciative if an instructor included it in the class syllabus. It sure would invigorate a semester long creative writing course - while still introducing a few industry concerns and reinforce the admonishment "writers write."

As I reflect back, the imp in me...giggles?! The only thing I recall repeated, was two people essentially said they write about the stuff that scares them – oh, how that will help suspend my disbelief in the future – there is now another level of empathy in their prose to be immersed – I scream with you dear protagonist – and since I don't know the ending...”better you than me” – but I will live your terror vicariously!

For sharing the musings of the minds of the masters, I have a solid thank you!

This book contained short interviews of people involved in horror and science fiction. They worked in various fields: author, editor, tv\movie directors or actors, but the majority of those interviewed were authors. The author of this book was able to establish a comfortable relationship in his interviews and was therefore able to get reactions and responses from the person interviewed that were genuine and reflective. I have to admit that I haven't read all of the authors interviewed, but after reading their interview, I want to read their books now! I enjoyed reading the various authors reply to a common question-my favorite one being what monster they would imagine being. The only thing I felt missing in this book would be a bibliography of the authors. Even though their works are mentioned in the interview, it would be nice to have this resource.

Easy reading, interviews and insights from varied horror writers and filmmakers. Enjoyed.

So far Ive only read the interview with Ray Bradbury which was beautifully crafted. I felt present at the interview which I know is an unusual thing to say, but the pointedness and yet breeziness of the questions seemed so vivid and the answers given point for point so vividly beautiful as well, that it was impossible to feel any other way.
I know I should have probably waited to finish the whole book before writing here but this is not really a review and it has been so long since Ive been in school you will have to be happy that I said anything at all here. Listen. Get this book. It is lovely. The people interviewed alone make it fascinating. The freshness of this book will liven up your day and maybe help you to get some cobwebs out of your own head too, because you know it really is possible the questions you yourself need to ask yourself may also be as multilayered as the questions in these interviews. BUY THIS BOOK. I MEAN IT . Its enchanting and colorful and you won't regret it not one little bit and I really mean that too. UPDATE: Still working on this lovely book. So many ideas in conversations that sparkle like a million gleams of sunlight on the water. One person in this book called Michael McCarty "the Merlin of interviwers.' I am saying to you he wasn't kidding. Even if you don't care a fig for sci fi, for fantasy, for horror, for writers even READ THIS BOOK. Glinda the Good Wtich dressed in her pink ball gown in MGM technicolor would say the same. READ IT!!! And be happy.

An excellent collection of interviews with writers, filmmakers and actors involved with science fiction, fantasy and horror. All the interviews are concise and really bring out the best of the interviewee. Of course, we all have our favorites. I tended to identify more with the writers than the filmmakers, since I became a fan of the genres as a reader; some of the actors I did not know until film and roles were mentioned, but that's hardly surprising since I mostly consider actors to be a "necessary evil." Of particular interest to me was the interview with Ray Bradbury (still one of my favorites) and the way McCarty probed the very short stories I remembered most. He was similarly insightful with the works of other authors. I suppose the measure to apply to a book like this is how much new information did I learn about writers I already feel knowledgeable about? By that standard, McCarty's book succeeds admirably.
