Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Practicing attorney Whitlow follows up his successful debut novel, The List, with this Christian legal thriller about a small-town Georgia lawyer who lands a mysterious case. Called to defend a man accused of killing a wealthy Atlanta college student, the attorney, "Mac" MacClain, struggles to find the holes in what initially seems an airtight case for the prosecution. Whitlow intuitively understands the mandate to write about what he knows: the courtroom, the corner church, the small Southern community. Many of the book's details evoke a strong sense of place, and the courtroom scenes manage to maintain suspense without resorting to melodrama. The narrative falls a bit flat when Whitlow navigates Mac's emotional life. Like too many male characters in contemporary Christian fiction, Mac is a lonely widower (see also Frank Peretti's The Visitation, Ted Dekker's Heaven's Wager and, of course, the Left Behind series). Mac's wife and two sons perished years ago in a car accident with Mac at the wheel, and he struggles with grief and guilt. The novel opens with Mac sitting at his desk, trying to decide whether to kill himself with pills or a pistol. Whitlow does not sustain Mac's suicidal tendencies in a believable way; once Mac gets involved with the murder case, his energy drives it to its successful completion, making his automatic return to suicidal thoughts near the novel's end implausible. Despite this, Whitlow offers readers exciting courtroom drama and an authentic Southern sensibility.

From Booklist

In The Trial, small-town attorney Kent ("Mac") MacClain, in despair over the death of his wife and two sons, is about to commit suicide. Then the phone rings, and he's handed a public defender's role in what is alleged to be the murder of a young woman from a prominent local family. The defendant is a drifter who can't remember what happened, but circumstances clearly point to his guilt. Mac is aided by a pretty out-of-town widow, a Christian psychologist with a son. She quickly goes to work both on Mac's head and on his heart in this seamless thriller from the reliable Whitlow. John Mort

The Trial is the second book I've read by Robert Whitlow, and though it was dramatically different than The List, I enjoyed it just as much. Mr. Whitlow is a gifted writer. As the title suggests, this is a legal thriller, not a mystery. Like the previous novel, Christian conversion and intercessory prayer play a big part in the story. That's not a problem for me, but non-Christians, irreligious, skeptics, and even nominal Christians might take offense.

Anyway, I loved the characters. Whitlow does a great job with defense attorney Kent "Mac" MacClain, defendant Peter Thomason, and the supporting cast. Mac is a skilled attorney hanging by a thread due to extreme depression who gets roped in by the Judge to defend a young man accused of murder. Most of the book involves the Trial from beginning to end. Everything rings true since the author is (or was) a practicing attorney.

Like the List, the ending seemed rushed and farfetched. But no more farfetched than most novels and movies. Because the writing is excellent, it was hard to put this book down. So despite the minor flaws, it's an easy five stars.

An amazing book about God's redemption! This book draws you into the story and then reveals the depth of God's love and plan for us.

The story line was good and if you skip all the Bible reading and religious revelations it’s okay. I would not recommend it.
And would not have finished it if I had something else to read at the time.

A young man, Pete, is accused of murdering the daughter of a powerful man, richest in the county. He remembers nothing of the events surrounding Angela's death. Mac McClain is appointed to be his defense attorney. I would say redemption is the overarching theme of the book. And it is excellent. I read it a number of years ago and liked it even more this time. Robert Whitlow remains one of my favorite writers.

I did not expect the heavy religious under tone and almost put this story aside. The plot was tight and the characters well developed. Knowing that the characters constantly came back to their personal beliefs took a bit of the enjoyment from me. I probably will not be reading the next installment.

I enjoyed this book so much i read it one sitting. This one is a classic. The story of the salesman who turns into an insect, and his family's increasingly awful treatment of him, makes one think.

A truly engaging read, with lots of plot twists and great characters. Whitlow's story combines great legal drama and believable Christian characters to bring us a tale of the redemption, forgiveness and transformation any of us can find through Jesus's love.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping courtroom drama. It's detailed and there were times throughout it when I couldn't picture how it would end. The only thing I didn't like were the pages and pages of religious sermons that I had to skip through. I would have been happy to stipulate early in the book that the main protagonists approach to life was based very strongly in their faith and then get on with the story.
