The Samson Option Paperback – February 1, 2004

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Young Jewish couple trapped in an action adventure involving a splinter group of Muslims, the Israeli Secret Service, Messianic Jews and dreams of the Archangel Michael

Samuel Rosen passed from this life into the next with no struggle, no anxiety as the thin blade severed the artery in his throat . . . His killer calmly stepped back out of range of the spurting blood, wiped off his knife with a corner of the duvet, and whispered Allah akbar, God is great.

Far away in Bombay, Ari Ben Chaim learns that four people in his life have been murdered by unknown assassins his adoptive parents, a psychologist who treated him after he resigned from the Israeli army, even an old Englishwoman who had been his baby nurse many years before and Ari must find out why. He returns to Israel in search of answers, only to find more questions when he is kidnapped by a Muslim splinter group, escapes, and then is recruited by the Israeli intelligence service for a top secret mission into the heart of Iran s weapons program.

Meanwhile Lily, the woman he loves, waits for him in a remote Israeli village, where she tries to unravel mysteries of her own. What is the meaning of the words she discovered engraved on a stone in an overgrown convent garden in Jerusalem . . . and who is this Lord that her new friends worship? In The Samson Option, Sharon Geyer reveals worlds within worlds. The reader will glimpse ancient Biblical secrets against a backdrop of modern-day political intrigue, all the while hoping that our young hero and heroine will survive and be reunited. With her gift for action, dialogue, and description, Geyer gives readers a bird s-eye view of the landscape and people of the Holy Land, her adopted home.

Review

The Samson Option was not hard to put down; it was almost impossible to put down! -Reviewed by Paul McShane, Good News, etc.

The character development is wonderful. The good guys are truly heroic and the bad guys are so bad they're venomous. This is a love story. It's a murder mystery. It's a story of political intrigue and spiritual awakening.

The Samson Option was one of our book club choices last year. The story was engrossing with vivid imagery and a fast pace. We follow the main characters, Ari and Lily, through twists and turns in the story while we watch their relationship develop. I'm off to read The Time of Jacob's Trouble, second book in the trilogy.

This book is the first in a trilogy. It takes the reader through Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Israel and ends in a remote town in Arizona. Sharon is an excellent descriptive writer and has a knack of explaining concepts and scenery equally clear. I couldn't wait to start the second book, "Time of Jacob's Trouble."

There is a lot to praise about Sharon Geyer’s The Samson Option, but what kept me turning the pages late into the night was how plausible—and current!—the events she describes were. There is a full range of believable characters to love and hate, and her descriptions of the locales reveal her first-hand knowledge of them. The Samson Option is the first of a trilogy, so I’m now eagerly following up with the main characters Ari and Lily, in the second book,The Time of Jacob’s Trouble. I highly recommend this book.

After reading the author's memoir, I enjoyed seeing some of her experiences as part of the fictional characters' experiences and then built upon. I was horrified, intrigued and captivated by the plot. Since book two in the series was already available, I quickly obtained a copy to read on.

Sharon Geyer lived in the Middle East and has intimate knowledge of both the Muslim and the Jewish faiths. This enables her to write exciting fiction with realism. You will instantly engage with her characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I learned a great deal about Israel, especially Jerusalem, as though I was walking the streets myself while enjoying a mystery.

I just finished S. Geyer's "The Samson Option." This story is not only a good read that held my interest, but is a timely subject of ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. S. Geyer's escorted me on a walk through history, with its people, religions and customs. Her main characters, Ari and Lily come alive as they each wander on a separate and perilous journey, hoping to rekindle their love for each other. With the book's vivid descriptions, I had a great sense of being there. I could see the lava rocks, steep cobblestone steps leading to ancient buildings, and landscapes going back to the beginning of time.
I'm looking forward to journey again with Ari and Lily in Geyer's sequel entitled, "The Time of Jacob's Troubles."
