Two eighteen year old girls go missing while on vacation in Thailand during their gap year. Their worried families are thrust into the media spotlight, and all they want to know is what happened to their daughters. As journalist Kate Waters gets the inside scoop, she begins to wonder about her own son who she hasn't seen in two years. The story of the girls disappearance begins to unfold, and those involved find out that danger is closer than they know and the truth isn't always as it seems.Let me begin by thanking Berkley | Penguin Random House for the free copy of The Suspect (Kate Waters, #3) written by Fiona Barton that I won on a First Reads Giveaway on Goodreads.com. I was thrilled to say the least when I found out I had been selected to read this book for my honest review. Not having read any of Barton's previous books, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I loved the premise of the story. What I already knew was that this was the third installment in the series, and normally, I won't read a book in a series until I've read all of the predecessors. However, I made an exception in this case because I just couldn't wait to read The Suspect. I wasn't disappointed. Some of the things I absolutely loved about The Suspect was that it was told from different perspectives. I think a lot of authors tend to shy away from this style of writing because it is a difficult thing to do well, but Fiona Barton did an exceptional job with the multiple perspectives. I really felt like I got to know the characters this way. I also enjoyed it flipping between the present and the past. This is another thing that is difficult to do well in my opinion because I've read books where it was done poorly. However, this wasn't one of those books . . . Barton did a phenomenal job with flipping back and forth in time too.Another thing that I absolutely loved was that I never fully guessed exactly what happened, which is a breath of fresh air because The Suspect falls into my favorite genre of books. It takes a hell of a good writer to keep me on my toes. Don't get me wrong, there were a couple of things I guessed at that ended up being correct, but there were a couple of things I guessed at that were wrong. One of the things I didn't like about this book is that there were a couple of words that I was unfamiliar with because they aren't commonly used in the United States, and I couldn't quite determine what they meant. I was fine with words like loo and telly because I was already familiar with those words. It makes me wonder if people in the U.K. or Australia have trouble with some of our "slang" words that aren't quite as common in every day conversation. And for the life of me, I can't remember what the word or two was that I was unfamiliar with. Other than that, the only thing I didn't quite like was the ending. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that we found out what happened, and it had a definite conclusion. I didn't like the fact that it alluded that one of the characters really did have something to do with one of the murders.Overall, I gave The Suspect (Kate Waters, #3) five out of five stars on Goodreads.com. If you love mysteries and thrillers, then this is a definite must read. I had trouble putting it down. Now I can't wait to go read the first two books in the series . . . The Widow (Kate Waters, #1) and The Child (Kate Waters, #2).

When two eighteen-year-old girls go missing in Thailand, their families are thrust into the international spotlight: desperate, bereft, and frantic with worry. What were the girls up to before they disappeared?

Journalist Kate Waters always does everything she can to be first to the story, first with the exclusive, first to discover the truth—and this time is no exception. But she can’t help but think of her own son, whom she hasn’t seen in two years, since he left home to go travelling.

As the case of the missing girls unfolds, they will all find that even this far away, danger can lie closer to home than you might think…

My Thoughts: I have enjoyed other books by this author, including the recurring appearance of Kate Waters, the journalist. She feels like an old friend, and her first person narrative personalizes her perspective even more.

How does the addition of Kate’s own son, Jake, add to the intensity?

I liked the short chapters and the switching between parents, detectives, and journalists…giving us an emotional layer we might otherwise lose in the mix.

While the detectives, parents, and journalists are revealing their stories, we see flash backs of the girls in Thailand, and with each page, we see that danger has been lurking from the beginning.

We also see the early conflicts, primarily because Alex had been planning the trip with an old friend, Mags, who had bowed out at the last moment. The substitution of Rosie, who was not a very close friend, would turn out to be a big mistake.

Will the revelations bring peace? Or will more pain and conflict arise? A slow build that didn’t feel slow, since we moved from one set of characters to another, The Suspect held my interest throughout, while touching that emotional core as I empathized with the characters.

As the police and press shift from one suspect to another, taking many wrong turns along the way, I kept guessing, and then learning something different at the next turn. The final answers left a few loose threads…and some moral ambiguity. 5 stars.

Two British teenage girls embark on a gap year adventure to Thailand. Alex has researched, planned, and saved for the journey of her dreams. When her best friend Mags bails on her at the last moment, neighbor Rosie takes her place. Unfortunately, the two girls prove not to be compatible, which mars their trip by causing constant disagreements over the itinerary and acceptable social mores. Young and naive, the girls fall in with the wrong crowd and end up staying in quite a dive. When their parents stop receiving texts, emails or calls, they contact authorities to report the girls missing. Kate is a local reporter who is assigned to cover the story, which is ironic because her recent college dropout son is also living in Thailand. Kate's son Jake has not been in touch with his parents recently, but because he is in a totally different region of Thailand, Kate realizes there is little chance she will be able to connect with him as she travels to cover the mystery of the missing girls. The story takes a tragic turn as the bodies of two young girls must be identified. The story is told from alternating time frames and points of view. I found reading the emails from Alex to her friend Mags to be suspenseful, as the trip continued to go downhill. Despite plenty of foreshadowing, I didn't imagine in the beginning of the book just how horrible the situation would turn out to be. Alex was so promising and full of life, ready to take on the world. Fiona Barton creates interesting characters. Lesley and Jenny are mothers of the missing girls. "Mama" operates the sketchy hostel, and Jamie, Lars, and Diederik are travelers who take a keen interest in the girls. Bob Sparkes is an intriguing detective whose devotion to his job causes him to miss the last hours of his wife's battle with cancer. But the true protagonist is Kate, the journalist/mother who gets caught in a heart-pounding conflict of interest and has to be taken off the story. Barton keeps the reader guessing as to who did what. She fooled me.

I had read The Child, this author's second novel. and very much enjoyed it. See my review of that one below. I began this book with high expectations that were not quite realized. Nonetheless, I found that I was constantly turning the pages of the short chapters until I got to the end.

The central story is about Rosie and Alex who travel to Thailand for their gap year. The two are very different with Alex having a stronger moral compass. Rosie wants to party while Alex wants to see and experience the country. What happens to them and why forms the central mystery/suspense of the book. No spoilers here. Around them, there are other characters in Thailand and Rosie and Alex's families at home in England. The reader also spends time with a detective and reporter who were also in this author's earlier novels. Their relationships and backstories figure prominently in the narrative. There is an overlap in that Kate is reporting but her son is also traveling in Thailand and a part of the story's events.

This novel deals with tragedy and the impact of a difficult upbringing. I won't say about whom or whose so as not to spoil the suspense. Yet, despite this, I found that I did not care about the characters or story as much as I had hoped to.

Fiona Barton is one of the best contemporary writers. I read 'the chid' 'the widow' and 'the suspect'. The latter is my favorite. It is a hard book to put down. I just found another book by her and hope to buy everything she has written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thriller with unlikeable and dull characters

This novel is my first one from Fiona Barton. Sorry but I can't recommend this novel.
It is a murder mystery about two British girls who went missing in Bangkok on their vacation to Thailand later to be found dead wrapped in a blanket and the investigation followed by Kate Waters.
Things get complicated when Kate discovers that her elder son Jake is linked to the murders.
Positives are enough twists which keep the narration going , good language , the story being told in three povs and emails by one of the girls .
But the twists later revealed are not too shocking. And the climax twist is easily predictable and disappointing. I felt that the parents of the both dead girls didn't receive the justice they deserved.
Characters are not very likeable .
The reporters hunting the grieving parents for a story is truly irritating.
Lastly the author projects the Thai police in a very bad light. Throughout the novel they are depicted as corrupt, inefficient, negligent not once but for 4-5 times. Not very acceptable.
On concluding I won't recommend this novel .
