Little Black Lies: A Novel Hardcover – May 19, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
In such a small community as the Falkland Islands, a missing child is unheard of. In such a dangerous landscape it can only be a terrible tragedy, surely...
When another child goes missing, and then a third, it's no longer possible to believe that their deaths were accidental, and the villagers must admit that there is a murderer among them. Even Catrin Quinn, a damaged woman living a reclusive life after the accidental deaths of her own two sons a few years ago, gets involved in the searches and the speculation.
And suddenly, in this wild and beautiful place that generations have called home, no one feels safe and the hysteria begins to rise.
But three islanders―Catrin, her childhood best friend, Rachel, and her ex-lover Callum―are hiding terrible secrets. And they have two things in common: all three of them are grieving, and none of them trust anyone, not even themselves.
In Little Black Lies, her most shocking and engaging suspense novel to date, Sharon Bolton will keep the reader guessing until the very last page.

About the author
You’ve found my Amazon Author Page; thanks so much for dropping in.
If you’ve been with me from the start of my publishing adventure (Sacrifice, 2008), thank you from the bottom of my heart. I could not do this without you. If you’re about to buy your first Bolton book, then hello and welcome to my world. It’s dark at times, fast paced and invariably twisty. I set my wits against yours from the first page, but all in the spirit of friendship and the love of good stories.
My latest book, THE FAKE WIFE, is a twisty psychological thriller in which no one is quite whom they seem. I like to think of it as my Russian Dolls book: each mystery unfolds to reveal another, deeper, puzzle and only as we learn more about the characters at its heart – Olive, Michael, the Stranger, Michael’s first wife Eloise, and the elusive and mysterious Maddy, do we start to glimpse the deadly game these people are playing.
When I’m not writing I love sailing and wild swimming and have recently taken up ballet classes again after several decades’ hiatus. I love reading (of course) films and TV dramas, and spending time in my garden. I live in the Chiltern Hills, not far from Oxford, with my husband Andy and, occasionally, our grown-up son, Hal.
If you click the yellow FOLLOW button, Amazon will email you when I have a new release or if there’s a special offer on one of my books. It’s the best way to make sure you never miss out.

The first thing you need to know is that the book has a terrific ending so don’t skip ahead and don’t tell anyone. But this ending is perhaps the best ending of any mystery/thriller that I have read recently. I’m sure it will stay with me for quite some time.
The story is a rather simple three character play with each character telling their own story in the first person. This is not a technique that I appreciate and which I was last less than enthusiastic about when used in the bestseller GIRL ON THE TRAIN. But here Bolton makes it work because there is not going back and forth between the characters as each takes up about a third of the book. The Falkland Islands location is also unique revisiting some of the islands history such as the war between Great Britain and Argentina. My guess is that more people will be signing up on cruises that stop at Stanley after reading this book.
At the start we meet Catrin who is set on killing her best friend Rachel who killed Catrin’s two young boys. (I’ll let you learn the specifics.) Catrin is separated from her husband and is having an affair with a former British Army officer, Callum who suffers from PTS. Our three narrators are Catrin, Cullum, and Rachel.
The island is thrown into turmoil as a young boy goes missing, perhaps it’s a visitor from the cruise ship docked in Stanley. The disappearance seems remarkably similar to the disappearance of two other young boys who were never found. Islanders who always felt safe because of their small population begin to go hysterical thinking that there must be a killer on the Islands…. and suspicion slowly falls on Catrin or Callum. Then another boy disappears, Rachel’s youngest boy!
My last word is that if any film or mini-series producer is reading this you had better acquire the film rights in a hurry as this is a winner with two great parts for female leads. But don’t wait till it’s on Netflix read it before it’s in paperback.
This terrific mystery novel takes place on the Falklands Islands, and that in itself makes it a unique read.
The start of the book is narrated by a woman named Catrin and we know that she is plotting a murder. She had two young sons who died as a result of being left in a car that accidentally went over the side of a cliff. That car belonged to Catrin's best friend Rachel. The two women had been best friends since they were eight years old but since this horrific event, they haven't talked.
We know that Catrin had been married to a doctor named Ben, and that their marriage broke up after these tragic deaths. Catrin wasn't able to resolve her grief and misery and cannot move forward. Ben remarried and had a child.
Rachel had two young sons the same age as Catrin's sons. She also has a young boy named Peter who is just a toddler, born after the tragedy. Rachel is also grief-stricken about what happened.
The third important character (and sometime narrator) is a man named Callum. Originally from Scotland, he fought in the Falklands War and has PTSD and flashbacks from that time. He loves Catrin and wants to help her.
We know from very early on in this novel that 3 young boys have gone missing in the last 3 years. This would be an unusual event for any location but for a place as small as the Falklands it's particularly significant. People on the island themselves can't believe that one of them could be responsible and there are plenty of tourists that come visit. Could one of the tourists be to blame? Or was the young boys disappearance merely accidental and simply a coincidence?
There are many things about this book to recommend. For one thing, it's an absolute page-turner. It can be tricky having a book narrated first person but it works here. There is a really good psychological bend to the novel and I thought the characters were all fully fleshed-out and the dialogue sounded real and authentic.
It's also very interesting to read a book that takes place in the Falklands and I have to admit I didn't know much about that other than remembering the conflict between Argentina and England several years ago. The author really gives the reader a feel for what it's like living there and I enjoyed reading and learning about that.
So why not 5 stars? For the majority of the book I was sure this was going to be 5 stars and going on my best-of-the-year list. The problem I have with it is not easy to write without any spoilers but I will do so - I just had trouble with the resolution. In many ways it was excellent and it really did answer all the questions - and towards the end there is one terrific twist after another.
At the same time, when you tell a story from a narrator's point of view and you want to mislead the reader, you have to be careful to not have that character think these misleading things - because of course they know the truth. It's a thin line and for the most part the author succeeds, but I had problems when the story was narrated by one of the women.
The other issue I had was the final twist at the end (and I mean the very very end) - it did resolve the last mystery, but it bothered me and not necessarily for the right reasons. More I don't want to say but other opinions may certainly differ.
Still, I would definitely recommend this novel to those who love mysteries and reading stories with lots of twists and for anyone interested in the Falkland Islands.

Story wise, it starts out nice, but within first 5 chapters you'd be able to predict the end. Fictions generally get you hooked to them, but this didn't. It was intriguing, but not all that... great. There are better books out there at this price. Beyond the initial chapters it took effort to continue reading.
If you want, you can give it a read, but don't expect too much, you'll be disappointed.

The story takes place in the idyllic, remote small town of Stanley and its surroundings in the Falkland Islands. Its sense of place transported me there, with vivid descriptions of the wildlife, marshes, rocks and cliffs, and its minefields and harsh fog rolling in from the sea.We learn about the attitudes of the townspeople and tourists, and when the isolated town experiences unexplained tragedies the hysteria, rumours and suspicion abound.
The character development is deep and very well done. The book is divided into three sections, each narrated by one of the three main characters in which we get to know them and their most personal thoughts.
First we meet Catrin, a marine scientist working for Falkland Conservation. Three years previously her two young boys died when her best friend from childhood was careless with the handbrake on the car which rolled over a cliff and into the sea.Catrin has been broken in mind and spirit ever since. In the aftermath of the accident she lost a male baby which was stillborn, probably due to grief and rage. Catrin goes to work each day, an outwardly cold, emotionless shell, but is consumed by hate and plans to kill Rachel in revenge. Her husband Ben, town doctor, has left her alone and she is inwardly seething with hate.
The next narrator is Callum, a Scotsman, who fought in the Falklands War. He was the lover of Catrin in the past and is suffering from PTSD flashbacks with some blackouts. He remained in the Falklands after the war, thinking it would relieve his flashbacks and hoping for a future with Catrin, who mostly ignores him.
Then there is Rachel who is consumed by guilt for the death of Catrin's children and the loss and hostility of her dearest friend. She is over medicated and sleeps a great deal. She cannot love her youngest son who is doted on by his two older brothers.
This is a story of despair, anger and grief and how one can go on living when they no longer want to.
In the three years since her son's deaths, two boys have gone missing and were never found. Now a third child has gone missing, a three year old son of visiting tourists.Catrin reluctantly joins the search but is numb towards the missing child and his parents' grief. This is interfering with he plans of revenge. Later Rachel's two year old son vanishes. Catrin insists there must be a predator, but the townspeople cannot believe it is one of their own; maybe someone from the cruise ship is guilty.
As i read each of the three characters' stories, I became convinced each time who was responsible. There were some revelations which made me rethink what i believed. A final twist in the last paragraph was shocking and mind boggling but made perfect sense in retrospect. Love that the author was able to accomplish this.
I was torn beween a 4.5 and a 5 star rating, which is something i rarely give. There was a very disturbing scene involving wildlife that I found it difficult to get through, but it added to our understanding of the main characters, the townspeople and tourists. I found the suspense made it difficult to put down. My only break was to search pictures of the Falklands on the internet. Was transported to the place while reading which doesn't happen to me often. Highly recommended to anyone who likes a story of psychological suspense, a great plot, interesting characters in an unusual setting, with some twists and turns you didn't see coming.
