Amazon.com Review

Streetwise cop Eve Dallas and her trusty sidekick Peabody face a methodical killer in this latest addition to the In Death series by J.D. Robb, better known as the bestselling author Nora Roberts.

In the late 21st century, on the streets of New York City, a street sleeper is found murdered, his diseased heart removed with surgical precision. His death would typically drop to the bottom of a list of senseless and inexplicable killings, but Lieutenant Dallas, who "would stand for the dead and the living," is not about to let that happen. When her research uncovers similar crimes in several cities that were dropped under mysterious circumstances, Dallas knows she's facing a killer cruel enough to prey on the weakest in society and powerful enough to conspire an extensive coverup.

To complicate matters further, Dallas faces an equally troubling threat to her career when she's linked to the death of a fellow cop. Now she must fight to restore her good name as well as track down the killer.

In Conspiracy in Death, Roberts creates a futuristic world of evil that Eve Dallas negotiates through tough talk and brute force. While Robb crafts the crimes with great care, she assumes a familiarity with the characters that new readers will lack. But fans of the In Death series and newcomers alike will enjoy the thrill of the chase as Eve Dallas sets out to get her man. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

From Publishers Weekly

"For some, death wasn't the enemy. Life was a much less merciful opponent." So opens the eighth and latest installment (following Holiday in Death) in Robb's (a.k.a. Nora Roberts's) futuristic crime drama series. Moody, angst-ridden Lieutenant Eve Dallas investigates a series of "sidewalk sleeper" murders. The medically skilled killer is harvesting defective human organs from New York City's homeless population. When Eve gets too close to solving the crime, she becomes the prime suspect in the death of a fellow cop and loses her badge, which nearly destroys her emotionally. But this feisty heroine isn't down for long; she rallies and returns to form as the maverick cop readers know and love. Followers of the Death series will see a slight softening in Eve's character as she puzzles over a pregnant womanAa possible nod toward the end of this series (Loyalty in Death will follow this title). Until then, Robb has once again delivered an engrossing, first-rate read.

You know who your friends are when you are up against the system.
Eve has made a new one and all her old ones stepped up. Excellent read.

FINAL DECISION: A dangerous and powerful killer is determined to keep secrets and will do anything -- even destroy Eve -- for protection. This is one of the best in the series because the story hits close to Eve when the killer turns on her.

THE STORY: A killer is expertly removing organs from vulnerable people for a mysterious purpose. The first kill is a street person with his heart removed in a precise and clean manner. It appears that the killer might be a well-trained surgeon. When Eve presses for answers, she becomes a danger and has to be eliminated. Suddenly Eve, herself, is in the crosshairs and has to fight for what matters to her along with uncovering the killer.

OPINION: This is one of my favorite books in the series because of the connection between the events in the case and Eve's personal life. And the connection is done in an interesting way and not the typical sexual crime case that triggers her memories so often.

Readers of the series know that Eve has a childhood filled with rape and abuse. She has made herself by dedicating herself to her job. This book challenges that part of her life and Eve has to deal with that along with solving the crime. When I read these books, I am not as interested in the solving of the crime as I am with the overarching story about Eve.

For me, this book by forcing Eve to confront some of her deepest fears about herself shows her strength and determination and also how much she has changed from the closed off woman from NAKED IN DEATH.

Although Eve is deeply challenged here, she is not alone anymore.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book introduces both Don Webster and Louise Dimatto.

CONNECTED BOOKS: CONSPIRACY IN DEATH is the eighth book in the In Death series. The crime/mystery is completely separate and independent, but there are continuing personal story lines in the series. I suggest the series be read in order because of the significant personal stories.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

4.5 stars!

After basically years of seeing this series around and reading about this mystical Roarke, I gave in and decided to read the In Death Books. It was quite an undertaking, since when I started there were 33 books already released in the series, not counting short stories and novellas. Besides that, deciding to read this series was a big commitment in two fronts. One, I simply had to by 33 books and secondly, I would not be reading anything else until I was done. That's how psychotic I can be when it comes to book series.

December 2011 was when my journey began and by February 2012 I was done and now there is NO turning back. I am IN LOVE with this series! I not only obviously love Roarke, but I love Eve and all the secondary characters that make up this great story as well.

Yes, I have become irritated with Eve at times, but I adored being able to see her grow throughout the series. It has been quite a ride, but one I will never regret hopping aboard.

This series is a great mix of mystery, police drama and romance. I love every aspect of it, from the near futuristic setting, to the way J.D. Robb writes her prose. If there is one thing that bothers me, is that considering the series has 35 books published, the span of time that has passed is very short and I wish the lapse between books was a bit longer. But if you read the books throughout a longer period of time, it won't really matter, but reading them so close together made me wish for that longer lapse.

Eve is such a complex character. All that she has been through has made who she is, but her story is not less heartbreaking because of it. For that matter, so is Roarke's and the fact that these two found each other is nothing less than serendipity. They need each other and I am sure they would never have grown to be who they are in the series by book 35, if not for each other's presence in their lives. Not to mention the "family" they have built with their dear friends.

One of the biggest issues brought up in this series by J.D. Robb, is the Nature Vs. Nurture debate. I love it! It always makes me think and it is very satisfying to see these people that could have become something very wrong, rise above nature and blood, to become amazing people.

On the crime fighting aspect of the series, I find that Robb uses two types of narrative. Sometimes she carries more of a "Monk" style, where the perpetrator is clear if not early on, but soon. The other one is where we get a punch in the face when we finally find out out who it is. I really enjoy that she doesn't have only one style, since that always keeps me guessing =D

I LOVE this series and if you have yet to check it out, please do so! The first few books might not compel you completely, but keep reading! You won't regret it!

Eve’s latest case revolves around someone who is illegally harvesting organs from homeless people and killing them in the process. Eve is the first person to link the killer to similar crimes all around the world but now she’s got to work fast before even more people die. Her job is never easy but a run in with another officer, Bowers, just makes things even more complicated. Bowers is a bad cop but she’s one with a big mouth and she’s set her sights on making Eve’s life a misery. All Eve wants to do is focus on solving her case but with Bowers making multiple unfounded complaints about her she finds her reputation on the line and her job at risk.

Conspiracy in Death was a brilliant instalment to the In Death series, not only do you have the action of Eve’s hunt for a serial killer but you also have her coming under attack in her professional life thanks to Bowers. Everyone knows Bowers is a troublemaker but unfortunately, she’s very good at making waves and Eve’s bosses have to follow procedure now that official complaints have been made. Eve’s entire self-worth is tied up in her knowing that she’s brilliant at her job, it’s the one thing that she has always focused on and by protecting others she feels like she is doing something positive with her life. It was painful to see how badly shaken she is when her job is at risk, we really get to see Eve at her most vulnerable here and it hurt to see her brought so low by someone so awful.

On the other hand, Eve being in such an impossible situation really gave her friends a chance to rally around her and show her how much they care which was fantastic. Of course, Roarke is always her number one supporter but characters like Peabody, Feeney, Mavis, Mira and so many others went out of their way to show Eve that they had her back and would never let Bowers win. I loved all the supportive friendships that were showcased here and they gave Eve the safety net she so desperately needed. Roarke is as perfect as ever and the relationship development between him and Eve is the main reason I love this series as much as I do so it’s great to see that Eve is finally starting to be more open with him about how she feels. They really are a brilliant couple and I’m glad I have so many more books to devour before I’m caught up with the series!

Scary stuff. Imagine one day this not being a work of fiction but a reality. Glad Eve is back ready to kick ass and with Roake by her side things can only turn up at notch or two. Can only imagine where Eve and Peabody go for their next adventure. Great storyline, better plot, the usual characters and some great sex scenes. Everything a book could want and more.
