There is much to be said for the ESV:
1. The translators have tried hard to convey the linguistic features of the originals. When words with related roots are used in the original, the ESV typically captures this in the English.
2. The ESV typically tries to leave ambiguous what is ambiguous in the original. It is very popular but completely unhelpful to think of the ESV as a literal translation and that literal is better. The ESV has to (and does) make interpretive calls on a regular basis (see #3) but the closer it stays to the original languages the less useful a translation it ends up being*.
3. The evangelical tradition from which the ESV comes is well served by the interpretive decisions the translators have made. The text is often fresh and yet remains memorable. The interpretive calls that have been made are in line with historical Christendom and will enlighten rather than alarm us.
4. My favourite aspect of the ESV is its translation of the Old Testament. I had been using the NASB quite regularly before using the ESV with any frequency. The NASB often "overtranslates" the Hebrew where the ESV, I find has a much simpler rendering and far more clearly linked to the original texts.
I nevertheless maintain certain misgivings with regards to the ESV:
1. My impression is that the translators have bought too much into the idea of "literal" translations (and many of their customers are to blame). The result is a sometimes (certainly not always) clunky rendering in English that is more laborious than pleasurable to read (the NLT, on the other hand, is managing to capture this essential aspect of translation far more effectively)
2. The idea that it is a literal translation means that the ESV gives the impression that it is not making interpretive calls. Any translator (including those on the ESV committee) will tell you that they are interpreting in order to translate, my gripe is that there is a somewhat deceptive sales pitch going on when those who favour word-for-word translations are sold the ESV as a literal version.
3. Coming out of Christian tradition, the ESV has failed to break free of the idiosyncrasies of Christian-eese, that is the English that is unique to Christians. The more recent NIV11 has responded well by making use of Collins Bank of English to critically examine its own use of English and discovered words like "men" are only used of "humanity" within Christendom (in other words, outside of Christendom, the average person will read the word "men" and think "a bunch of guys"). If we really believe the Bible should be made accessible to the average person, we need to break out of our own usage of English. This is especially true given that gender is such a hot topic and our translations end up gender exclusive in the ears of the world when the original languages are actually inclusive.
Who should/should not use the ESV?
1. I love using the ESV and it is still my primary text. That said, I have knowledge of original languages and I use it because I like the predictability of the translation decisions that the committee has made. So scholars and pastors will be well served by the ESV.
2. In a Bible study I was running with college level students, I found that often even they were struggling to understand the syntax of the English used especially when read aloud. For this reason, the translation I recommend by default is the NIV.
3. I would highly recommend the ESV to someone wanting to explore Scripture more deeply. The NLT is fantastically readable and an excellent guide especially to new readers. The ESV makes you work harder at understanding the text.
4. I would also recommend that the ESV not be the only translation used. Sometimes the ambiguities are only in the English and not in the originals and other translations can show that. Also, other translations are done by scholars just as brilliant as those behind the ESV, the difference is that they are given a different mandate.
The ESV is a wonderful translation, I warmly commend it to you.
* The job of a translator is to convey the meaning of the original. If a translation stays as close as possible to the original, it foregoes the opportunity to unveil what the original language is trying to convey (for more on this, see Doug Moo's talk "We Still Don't Get It: Evangelicals and Bible Translation ..." available as pdf and on youtube).
(UPDATE: This is ESV 2011 Text edition, and NOT 2007. And as of now [5/26], only New Classic Reference has the 2011 ESV text. The changes from 2007 edition are minor however: grammar, punctuation, and textual notes).
1. LEATHER. The quality of the leather is average. But this is to be expected for the price. The leather feels more plastic than flexible. The thickness of the leather is somewhere in the middle - not too thin and not too thick. It will take a time to condition the leather to become flexible and supple. [NOTE: genuine leather often refers to pigskin and not cowhide. Cowhide leather is mentioned as such].
2. SPINE. The spine of the Bible is tight and strong. The Bible is Smyth-sewn (stitched) and also glued to the spine to enhance durability and strength. Some Bibles are indeed stitched, but it is not well glued to the spine. This edition is well done in both fronts. Because it is tight on the spine, you might be tempted to press down to relax it, but do not force it too much, let it take a normal course of use, then it will naturally become relaxed without damaging the spine.
3. SIZE. It is 5 ¾" x 9" x 1 ½" It is thicker than other comparable Bibles (ie. NIV Classic Reference Bible or Classic Reference Bible, Updated NASB , but these are NOT Smyth-sewn binding). It is thicker than previous ESV Classic Reference Bible, TruTone, Brown/Cordovan, Portfolio Design edition. It is slightly larger than The One Year Bible: The entire English Standard Version arranged in 365 daily readings , but almost the same thickness.
4. FONTS. The size of the font is 9 pt - highly readable. I love the font size! Black letters are clear and evenly printed. However Red letters (the words of Christ) are faint and light, they are more like pink than red (but they are legible). Hopefully, in the future, there will be FULL black letter edition.
5. FORMAT. The Bible is organized in double-column, paragraph to paragraph (and not verse by verse) format. It has 3/8" side margin therefore not enough room for note taking. Center-column cross reference is easy to locate, for all the verse references are in bold letters.
6. REFERENCES. [a] Concordance - This is exactly the same concordance that is in the ESV Study Bible (3000 + entries). But fonts are small as expected. [b] Maps and Illustrations (32 pages at the end of the Bible) - All of them are found in ESV Study Bible with minor exceptions - that some details in ESV Study Bible are omitted. Also Maps and Illustrations are printed on thicker pages than the Bible pages. [c] Introduction of the each Bible book - it is concise summary of the book: main point of the book and the date it was written. [d] Center-column cross reference - it has robust 80,000 cross references. Very helpful in studies.
Overall, I am satisfied with the Bible. I will be using this for a long time. The value for your money is there. Highly recommended.
Another thing I want to share, is Christ is returning soon. In our lifetime! Much proof is out there. The book of revelation and Mathew 24, book of Luke and Daniel describe in great detail what the end days, the time before Jesus return will look like. We are in it! Get prepared spiritually, tell everyone you know. Jesus said we would be persecuted for our faith. He said if they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. Never give up on your family and loved ones! Never! Dont let the enemy discourage you from telling them the truth! We are Gods appointed Watchmen on the wall. Be strong. Pray for strength and boldness to preach the gospel. This is the churchs finest hour. The final stretch. The culmnation of end time events right before Jesus Christ returns! HalleluYah! One day we will all meet in heaven! Rejoicing that we made it! I long for that day brothers and sisters. Be strong. Until then we have a job to do! To lead as many to Christ as possible! God doesnt want anyone to be lost. He sent us His very best to die for us. Hisone and only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him may have Everylasting life! Amen!
