Madame Blavatsky's Victorian-era masterpiece is now scaled down to its essentials, providing the most readable, accessible experience ever of one of history's seminal occult works.

The Secret Doctrine, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky's masterwork on the origin and evolution of the universe and humanity itself, is arguably the most famous, and perhaps the most influential, occult book ever written. Published since 1888 only in expensive, two-volume editions of some 1,400 pages, it has long eluded the grasp of modern readers- until now.

This single-volume edition, abridged and annotated by historian and Theosophical scholar Michael Gomes, places the ideas of
The Secret Doctrine within reach of all who are curious. In particular, Gomes provides a critical sounding of the book's famous stanzas on the genesis of life and the cosmos- mysterious passages that Blavatsky said originated from a primeval source and which form the heart of The Secret Doctrine. Gomes scrupulously scales down the book's key writings on symbolism to their essentials, and offers notes and a glossary to illuminate arcane references. His historical and literary introduction casts new light on some of the book's sources and on the career of its brilliant and elusive author, one of the most intriguing personages of the nineteenth century.

At once compact and representative of the work as a whole, this new edition of
The Secret Doctrine brings unprecedented accessibility to the key esoteric classic of the modern era.

Review

"The Secret Doctrine assumes the dignity of a scripture, for in its pages eternal mysteries are clothed in ancient and modern terms, and to those who have eyes to see, the ageless wisdom is revealed." --Manly P. Hall, author of The Secret Teachings of All Ages

About the Author

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born on August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk (Ekaterinoslav), Ukraine, daughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andreyevna (née de Fadeyev). In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began more than 20 years of extensive travel, which brought her into contact with mystic traditions the world over. She was the principal founder of the Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875, and devoted her extraordinary literary talents to its humanitarian and educational purposes until her death in London, England, on May 8, 1891. Along with writing her several books, H. P. Blavatsky kept up a voluminous correspondence and also contributed a steady stream of essays and articles to periodicals in English, French, and Russian.

I took a class with Dr. Santucci, one of the leading scholars of Theosophical studies and editor of the journal "Theosophical History." I didn't really appreciate how big of a name Dr. Santucci is in the field until his name popped up in several of the books I was reading for this class, including Jocelyn Godwin's "Theosophical Enlightenment." Gomes was highly recommended by Dr. Santucci because of how thorough Gomes knowledge of the topic is and how long he has been studying and pursuing the topic.

Frankly, after taking two different classes that focused heavily or exclusively on theosophy, I have personally decided I am not a fan of the Secret Doctrine; to say it is complex and obscure is putting it nicely and gently. Frankly, I find it makes little to no sense, and if it weren't for previous exposure to some key concepts of Hinduism, I would have been completely lost. That being said, the books and articles I read that were written by Gomes were the ones that made the most sense and were most clearly presented and seemed to have pulled from multiple sources to verify the information.

If you are going to read "The Secret Doctrine" I would personally recommend getting this book first as an introduction, and then investing in the Keys to the Secret Doctrine (Golden Keys? I can't find the specific title I was looking for, if I find it I'll add it to this review later) and actual unabridged volumes of the Secret doctrine; if you dive head in, you may very well lose your mind.

By the way, good luck!

Awesome Book. and even more amazing that Madame Blavatsky compiled this much information in the 1800's without a computer! This copy is edited and I have no complaints that a educated person condensed and explained and arranged the text for easier reading and understanding. A must for a person interested in ancient wisdom . Five stars. A must for any library.

This book was the major kick-start to the modern occult revival in the early 1900s. Very useful to the serious scholar. The print version is much easier to follow than the kindle version, due to the author's copious use of footnotes which often continue on to the next page, which on the kindle, interrupt the main text and cause some difficulty in following the thread.

I got this as a gift for someone who was interested in reading books by this author. He said it was interesting, but did mention that this is a condensed version of a much larger work (so just fyi). I was not aware of that when I ordered it. However the book was in great condition and arrived promptly in time for Christmas.

I like the understanding of our evolution here as the human race develops. The potential we have is discussed in this book. If you have been paying attention all these years as to what is going to happen to us in the future...., well let's just say it's nothing to exaggerate about or predict if you aren't really connected. The phonies out there are easily exposed because you would of read this book.

The person I gave this book to gave me a review to post here. They said that the book is insightful as to what is going on with religion today and why so many things are being done today. This book also explains why after World War II the Japanese were forced to remove all religious symbology from their daily lives.

If the reader is interested in theosophy, then this book is a must read. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky is a dominant figure in the development of theosophy. Reading her, will eventually lead you to and prompt you to read Jiddu Krishnamurti; he who was chosen to be a "world teacher". Once you read Krishnamurti, you will be hooked on his approach to teaching, learning, and life in general. These books are very supportive of one's journey in life. If you are trying to find your way in a challenging world, you will find Blavatsky and Krishnamurti interesting.
