A pioneering revolutionary prescription for the health and long life of your pets

For two decades, Dr. Martin Goldstein—America's most successful, renowned holistic veterinarian—has healed and helped his animal patients with the same natural therapies that benefit humans. The results have been so astounding that today critically sick pets are brought to him from across the country for a new chance at life and health.

In this compelling, very accessible book, Dr. Goldstein explains exactly what holistic medicine is and how it works. By treating the root of a health problem instead of its symptoms, you too can help your animal to regain and maintain its own health, as nature intended. Dr. Goldstein also shares many remarkable true stories of supposedly terminally ill animals who have recovered to full wellness. Inside you'll discover

• Why our animals get sick, even when we strive to give them the best of care
• An exhaustive A to Z guide of pet ailments—and the best course of action
• Why vaccines can do more harm than good
• The link between diet and disease—and how the right diet can not only prevent disease but reverse it
• How acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and other alternative options work--safely and painlessly--to restore true health
• Specific guidance for the use of herbs, supplements, and natural remedies
• The good news (and the bad) about cancer in animals--including extraordinary new treatments and potential cures
• Coping with the inevitable death of your pet--both physically and psychologically
• And much, much more

Amazon.com Review

As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King

From Publishers Weekly

Responding to an alarming increase in cancer and other diseases in ever-younger pets, Goldstein, founder of the Smith Ridge Veternary Center in upstate New York, offers a vivid and engrossing account of how toxic environment and poor diet are proving as deadly to our animals as they are to us. "Cancer is the far marker, the defining outer limit of how toxic our world has become, and of what those toxins can do to animals," writes Goldstein. Declaring himself one of a growing number of holistic veterinarians, Goldstein outlines an approach to healing that revolves around strengthening the immune system through diet and such holistic healing techniques as acupuncture and homeopathy, so that an animal can heal itself. Describing how he has treated an alphabet of medical problems, Goldstein reveals that the most radical vision is often enacted through small, commonsense steps?anemia requires iron, wasting diseases such as cancer indicate a need for increased protein. Although some readers used to conventional medicine will find Goldstein's views and proposed cures too drastic, the case he builds is exuberantly persuasive and actually inspiring rather than dire, which is not surprising since veteran Vanity Fair writer Michael Schnayerson is his co-writer. Goldstein also acknowledges the works of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, which in this case lends the notorious guru a bit of the author's positive, compassionate spirit. This is a life-affirming book that should interest any pet owner. 100,000 first printing.

A must-read for anyone who loves their dog or cat! SHARE THIS BOOK!!
Dr. Marty is a vet that truly cares about his patients...more than his pocketbook. This book discusses diets and natural health maintenance for our pets. Unfortunately modern "healthcare" and "diets" are litterally killing our beloved pets. In 2017 (almost 20 years after this book was written) the cancer rate among dogs is one out of every 1.61! How depressing is that??!!Through this well-written book one learns about vaccinations, pet foods (both commercial and species-appropriate) and natural supplements.I was fortunate to meet Dr. Marty in person at Smith Ridge Veterinary in South Salem, New York. While my dogs have been on a raw homemade diet for 8.5 years, one of my dogs (a rescue) was having horrible skin issues. Most vets prescribed medications to alleviate SYMPTOMS and suppress my dog's immune system.Dr. Marty, on the other hand, focused on identifying the UNDERLYING CAUSE of my dog's skin condition. After evaluating his bloodwork he prescribed a regimen of natural supplements that support specific organ function. In only three weeks my dog is doing great - his skin has cleared up; he's no longer scratching; eyes are bright and clear; and he's very energetic.Dr. Marty truly loves animals and wants them to live a long, happy healthy life.I encourage anyone who loves their furry family members to read this book and consider implementing Dr. Marty's recommendations. Doing so will improve your pet's quality of life and save you heartache (and money!) in the long run.On a final note, this book is easy and fast to read. Dr. Marty seamlessly intersperses valuable information along with case studies, keeping the reader interested and turning pages. My favorite chapter was the second to last one, which discusses the spiritual connection between pets and their owners. This book makes great gifts for the animal lovers in your life. I gave half a dozen away last month and just ordered a few more for colleagues. My pups and I are blessed to have access to this incredibly special human being. If you cannot meet Dr. Marty in person this book is the next best thing!

This is a wonderful pet health book and a great introduction to holistic pet care (or holistic medicine in general). My mother is a nurse, and I've always had pretty healthy eating habits and have taken care of myself. However for some reason it never occurred to me to apply that idea to my dog until I started hearing about feeding fresh food to dogs. I started researching about pet health since my dog had his tumor removed, and I wanted to keep him as healthy as possible in his old age. This book and its assertions about how to keep your pet healthy through diet and natural healing methods are unconventional, mind-blowing, and yet, so completely sensible that you wonder how people who love animals could have been duped to slowly kill their pets by feeding them waste materials of the food industry, suppressing their natural warning systems (i.e. illness/allergy symptoms), and poisoning by way of conventional medicine. How could we have ever believed that "table scraps" (i.e. real food) is bad for our pets? It makes you wonder about your own health, too. I now feed my dog home-cooked food, supplementing with human-grade kibble when I don't have time. He no longer smells bad just a week after being bathed!

UPDATE June 2007:
About six months after my dog's surgery to remove his tumors, I found two dark, raised moles growing in the same genital region where his removed tumor used to be. I was alarmed because these looked just like the old tumors. Instead of taking him to my regular vet (who'd just give him another surgery), I looked up one of the holistic veterinarians listed in this book (based in Santa Monica, CA). After reviewing the case, he recommended an ultrasound (to determine if the cancer has spread to organs), surgery to remove the tumors on the skin, and then an herbal treatment to keep it from coming back. Due to the cost, I chose to try only the herbal treatment and would consider the other options later.

A mere week later, I noticed that the largest mole on my dog's abdomen showed some redness around the edges and was not as raised as before. At 2 weeks, the mole turned almost all red (as opposed to a purplish-black color initially). Then the redness slowly dissipated until week 4, when it completely disappeared. Now it's a natural skin color and you can only tell by a small dot of loose skin that a mole used to be there. There was a small mole on his neck, too, that I can't find anymore because he has more hair there.

Sure, maybe the moles weren't that cancerous after all, I don't know for sure. What I do know is that they weren't normal -- they grew within 4 months or less. Also, my dog has some benign cysts on the skin that he's had since before the surgery, but the medicines didn't affect them at all. The vet said I can halve the dosage next month, though I don't know how long I'll need to keep it up after that. All in all, I am extremely grateful for the experience -- and it's all thanks to this book.

This book was an absolutely phenomenal read. I usually read books in a day or two, sometimes a week. This book was so dense and had so much great information that it has taken me over a month to finish it and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was informative without bogging me down with unnecessary information or scientific jargon that I wouldn't understand. This book is truly a treasure trove of information provided by Dr. Goldstein on the best way to keep pets healthy in a holistic manner. I loved his book so much that I drove two hours to have my puggle, Baby, treated there. We had recently found out that he had collapsing trachea. It presented as a terrible honking cough that made it extremely hard for my poor boy to breath. We took him to our regular conventional veterinarian. She took some x-rays and told us that the collapsing trachea was very pronounced. She did not believe that we should perform the stent surgery (supposedly the only treatment for such an ailment) as she felt it would only last a year or two at most and there were many potential complications. When we asked her what else we could do, she basically told us that he needed to lose some weight, offered to give us some steroids to help ease the inflammation in his throat, and to hope for the best. My mother and I were devastated. Baby has been with us for seven wonderful years and he is truly my best friend. I don't know what I would do without him. We were utterly distraught. Not even a week after this visit, I stumbled upon Dr.Goldstein's book. I began to read it and knew in my heart that this was the place I needed to take Baby. I called and made an appointment with one of the veterinarians there. By the time we left, I had hope again. Dr. R told us that Baby was many many years away from ever needing any type of surgery and she gave us four different all natural supplements to put him on. She focused on the whole dog, on what was causing the ailment, rather than just treating the symptoms. She told us we needed to focus on getting his allergies under control, as they are what caused the inflammation in the first place. She gave us an arthritic supplement to help strengthen the cartilage in his throat. Now, Baby is acting like a puppy again, his cough completely under control, and with many happy long years ahead of him. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in increasing the happiness and overall lifespan of their pet. Truly one of the best informative books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This book was truly a God send. (less)

Overall I really enjoyed reading this book. It contains a lot of helpful info and is a great resource for those wanting to transition to holistic pet care! Many of his suggestions I was already implementing prior to reading, which was reassuring. However, there were a couple of things I did not agree with. For one, I do not agree with feeding your dog pasta/gluten and would stick to whole organic foods (meats/veggies/fruit/whole grains/eggs). While I do agree that a vaccine for Lyme disease is not the solution, Lyme is not something to be minimized or downplayed. It can take a very serious toll on both humans and animals and is way more prevalent than he makes it out to be all around the country/ other parts of the world.

Dr Goldstein was far ahead of his time, in 1998, on subjects such as over-vaccination, alternative approaches and, especially, creating conditions to allow the body to heal itself. As a graduate of Cornell (an absolutely super vet school), he knows when to apply Western medical practices and when to take the 'softer' approaches.

I was lent the book by a friend, and when she wanted it back I decided that I needed my own copy, both for myself and to lend to friends who have animals.

As the 'better half' of a veterinarian who knows when to use what he learned in vet school and when to use acupuncture or recommend chiropractic or osteopathy, I've seen some startling results from holistic treatments. Dr Goldstein's book just put a kind of order to what I'd already seen and read, and added a great deal of new (to me) information.

I can't recommend this book too highly. MG

Great book for people on the fence about how to holistically care for your fur child. Having switched my own to a raw food diet, the principle of knowing what exactly is going in your child's food and the nutritional content really sees drastic health changes. Do it right from the start, and you should really never have experience any suffering with your loved one.
