Excerpts:
...Hence it follows that nothing can be our redemption, but the restoration of the 'lost humility, the original and only true relation of the creature to its God. And so Jesus came to bring humility back to earth, to make us partakers of it, and by it to save us. In heaven He humbled Himself to become man. The humility we see in Him possessed Him in heaven; it brought Him, He brought it, from there. Here on earth "He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death"; His humility gave His death its value, and so became our redemption. And now the salvation He imparts is nothing less and nothing else than a communication of His own life and death, His own disposition and spirit, His own humility, as the ground and root of His relation to God and His redeeming work. Jesus Christ took the place and fulfilled the destiny of man, as a creature, by His life of perfect humility. His humility is our salvation. His salvation is our humility.

About the authors
Andrew Murray was a much loved Pastor, appreciated speaker at religious conventions, and a much read writer of devotionally-oriented Christian publications in his day. His popularity continues to this day.
Andrew Murray was born in 1828 in Graff Reinet, South Africa. He was the second child of Andrew Murray Sr. (1784-1886) who was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa. Andrew’s mother, Maria Susanna Stegman, was of French Huguenot and German Lutheran descent. Murray had an incredible Christian heritage growing up. His father, Andrew Murray, Sr. was a Scottish pioneer minister and evangelical leader of South Africa. He was born into a pious Aberdeenshire family and studied at Aberdeen University, where he felt called to be a missionary to Newfoundland.
Murray helped to found what is now the University College of the Orange Free State, and the Stellenbosch Seminary He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.
He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions, he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope (1907).
Murray pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton.
Some of his popular writings include:
The Spiritual Life
The Master’s Indwelling
The Power of the Blood of Christ

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2024One of the most important books I have ever read! I have shared it with many people.I believe humility is very important in this world, and Andrew Murray explains it beautifully. I've been told by some that they can only read one or two pages at a time, because it really makes one take a hard look at themselves. I also had my "mind blown" by Andrew's clarity and forthcoming way of presenting his ideas. It is going to be the next book we read in my book study. Yayy!! I can't wait to hear others thoughts about it. Highly recommend!! Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2016In our fallen state, humility points us to the only way by which we can return to our rightful place as creatures. (p.10)
I have been challenging myself to read a few Christian Classics. I decided to review this true Christian “classic”. If you are unaware of this book, I hope this will raise your interest enough to go to pick up a copy and read it.
“Humility”, by Andrew Murray comes highly recommended and regarded by others I know. For me it is possibly in my top ten favorite Christian books so far. Humility is something that transcends our understanding in many ways and one of the true character marks of someone who follows Jesus. This book helps clear up some misconceptions on what humility is and what it is not as well as how to exercise more of it
One of my favorite quotes from this book is, “There is no pride so dangerous, none so subtle and insidious, as the pride of holiness.” That says a lot right there. I also really liked Murray's understanding that true humility will be evidenced in our relationships with others and not just our posture toward God. I think for some people they see themselves as humble in their relationship with God but it is not evidenced in their relationships with others. It is easy to think that we humble ourselves before God, but our humility toward others is the only sufficient proof that our humility before God is real.
Near the end is a great sample prayer to pray to God for more humility, but I’ll let you see that one for yourself after you buy your own must-have copy of this book. I very highly recommend this book for every single Christian. This is a real 5-star book.
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
When I look back upon my own Christian experience, or at the church of Christ as a whole, I am amazed at how little humility is seen as the distinguishing feature of discipleship.
Humility, the place of entire dependence upon God, is from the very nature of things the first duty and the highest virtue of His creatures. And so pride— the loss of humility— is the root of every sin and evil.
Humility is the only soil in which virtue takes root; a lack of humility is the explanation of every defect and failure. Humility is not so much a virtue along with the others, but is the root of all, because it alone takes the right attitude before God and allows Him, as God, to do all.
Let us consider how our lack of love, indifference to the needs and feelings of others, even sharp comments and hasty judgments that are often excused as being honest and straightforward, are thwarting the effect of the influence of the Holy Spirit on others.
Manifestations of temper and touchiness and irritation, feelings of bitterness and estrangement, have their root in nothing but pride.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2024This is a great book to read and study in your bible study/community group. There are few different versions with different physical sizes and edits/translations out there, but I picked up this particular copy. It's only 25 pages, but MAN was it packed with a lot of hard truths, firm reminders, and eye opening realizations about humility in our walk with Christ. I read this in a small mens group (6), and we got about 2 hours of discussion out of it. There were some stark realities that sometimes we just don't consider about our pride, lack of humility and the reality of sin, and this book while old does a great job of turning our eyes toward the Lord.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024Feeling the stirrings of pride within me, I eagerly sought out a book that could help me understand and embrace humility." This book did not only provide the answers I was looking for. It also points out and expounds on the perfect example of humility, Jesus Christ’s. His humility was simply the surrender of Himself to God, to allow Hi, to do in Him what He pleased. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart”
The more I read, the more I learn about Christ-like humility. And the more I learn, the more I am called to empty myself. It is in this beautiful paradox that I am met with a dilemma, and Andrew Murray reminds and redirects his readers to the answer we are all in need of. In his words, “Water always fills first the lowest places. The lower, the emptier a man lies before God, the speedier and the fuller will the inflow of the divine glory.”
I will most likely revisit this book whenever I am in need once again of that sweet humble pie.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2024I EAT every word! So beautifully written and so insightful! This book has really helped me in my spiritual journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025Read something different…read this book. This is old timey wisdom, and it comes from a deep well (Andrew Murray). At times I wish he would have put himself in the skeptics seat and thought critically about what he wrote, but all of this deserves to be wrestled with. Humility is truly an essential to the Christian life, and he proves it well!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025Wow! I have never placed this much humility or focus on prayer. What a message! It is the foundation of our faith.
