Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In the seventh Artemis Fowl title, the 15-year-old mastermind focuses his ingenuity on global warming while struggling with a devastating illness. After Artemis invites four fairy friends to Iceland for a demonstration of his latest invention, the Ice Cube, it becomes clear that he is suffering from the Atlantis Complex, which manifests as obsessive-compulsive behavior, paranoia, and multiple personalities. If this weren’t enough to worry about, a spaceship crashes and disgorges amorphobots programmed to kill. Colfer keeps the action moving with laughs and gadgetry as he bounces between several plotlines that spotlight peripheral characters. A treat for series fans. Grades 5-8. --Lynn Rutan

Eoin Colfer (pronounced Owen) is the New York Times best-selling author of the blockbuster Artemis Fowl series as well as Airman; Half Moon Investigations; The Supernaturalist; Eoin Colfer's Legend of... books; The Wish List; Benny and Omar; Benny and Babe; and Illegal, a graphic novel. He was born in Wexford on the southeast coast of Ireland in 1965, where he and his four brothers were brought up by his father (an elementary school teacher, historian and artist of note) and mother (a drama teacher). He first developed an interest in writing in primary (elementary) school with gripping Viking stories inspired by history that he was learning in school at the time.

Eoin got his degree from Dublin University and qualified as a primary school teacher, returning to work in Wexford. He married in 1991 and he and his wife spent about 4 years between 1992 and 1996 working in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. His first book, Benny and Omar, was published in 1998, based on his experiences in Tunisia; it has since been translated into many languages; a sequel followed in 1999. In 2001, the first Artemis Fowl book was published worldwide to much success - shortly thereafter he left teaching to concentrate fully on his writing.

To this day, Eoin has written 8 Artemis Fowl books which have sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

It's been some years since I read an Artemis Fowl book and it feels good to be back. Nice to see Artemis grow and mature. Love Colfer's writing!

Forbidden love, out of control robots, out of control wrestling brawl, underwater exploration, giant squid, and a mysterious mind shattering mental illness are just some of the things you can expect in the seventh installment of the Artemis Fowl series, The Atlantis Complex. This book comes from the award winning Irish writer Eion Colfer. He has many many awards for his books including: Irish Book of the Decade, Bistro Book of the Year Award, Irish World Literature Award, British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, and many others. Personally, I felt like this installment had a little bit of a different feel than the others. It's an extremely good book, just different than the others. That being said there are some things that have stayed the same, like the humor Artemis Fowl lovers have come to enjoy. If you haven't ever read an Artemis Fowl book before let me give you a taste, "It was an old hard back that his father often chose as a bedtime tale, entitled The Crock of Gold, which told the story of a greedy bucko who capture a leprechaun in a vain effort to steal the creature's gold. When father had finished reading the last word on the page, which was Fin, he would close the worn leather-bound cover, smile down at his son, and say, "That boy had the right idea. A little more planning and he would have pulled it off." In The Atlantic Complex Artemis has to face his toughest enemy yet...himself. Can he overcome the Atlantis Complex? Can he reclaim his body from the mysterious Orion? And what will become of Atlantis? Go pick up the Atlantis Complex today and find out! This book is perfect for anyone in middle school or up. I even read it in college! If you like Eion Colfer's writing you may also like the Supernaturalist. If your looking for something similar try The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud or The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix.

The 7th book in the Artemis Fowl collection really surprised me. The plot was very unexpected, with Artemis acting all crazy. I mean, how can a 15 year old boy genius just turn into a babbling physopath? The story was very interesting, and not all in good ways, but I guess it was a pretty good book, with all the characters holding just as much charm as in the past few books. And, even though I sort of saw it coming, A boy genius having feelings for an 100 year old elf?!?!? I mean, I hope they don't start dating in the next book! Ew.

This series must be read in order. The first book is "Artemis Fowl". The second book is "The Arctic Incident". The third book is "Eternity Code". The fourth book is "The Opal Deception". The fifth book is "The Lost Colony". The sixth book is "The Time Paradox". This is the seventh book. I can't wait to read "The Last Guardian"!

Artemis is slowly losing his grip on reality. The number four is death. He trusts no one. Not even Butler. But he will make up for all the bad he did by saving the world. No one can stop him. Can he hold it together enough to make his presentation? What will the fairies think of his idea? Is his decent into madness reversible?

I adored this book but it was not my favorite in the series. Previous books had a more interesting plot and events and somehow I felt that this book lacked that. The plotline for this novel seemed anticlimatic and very much less dramatic then some of the other novels that Colfer had written in the series. Sometimes I was disappointed in the criminal aspect of this but what this story lacked in plot I felt it made up for it in character and witty conversation. Though mildly hard to understand, the plotline created was uterly unique and I enjoyed the fact that Colfer revealed to us another charming side to Artemis or his alter ego. It was very entertaining and definitely laugh-out-loud humorous. I wanted a little more save-the-world aspect in this novel, something which I automatically expected of Colfer, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Recomended- definitely.

I am a BIG book worm and wanted to try something different because I am also a big Harry Potter fan. I really would suggest this book if you enjoy fantasy, action, hi- tech, adventure, and Harry Potter. I would suggest this book because of the detail and depth of the books. I also enjoy that the author has books other than Artemis Fowl, such as “The Fowl Twins.” I also enjoy the plot twists, the excitement, and the adventure.

The first time I encountered this series in a sample of volume 1, I was turned off. Months later, I decided to gamble. I have not been disappointed. I am sorry that there will be only one more, but maybe Mr. Colfer will reverse that decision. The other reviews here are full of spoilers and partial spoilers, so I am not including any here. I do recommend reading " The Artemis Fowl Files " first. This book makes more sense if you do. I just finished the "Alex Rider" series, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Artemis's adventures. Start with  Stormbreaker . I also recommend the "Daniel X" series as well, starting with  The Dangerous Days of Daniel X  . To any of you that may read manga, I recommend checking out  Black Butler, Vol. 1  by Yana Toboso. Ciel and Artemis have a lot of similarities, and I would like to see a meeting between a demon butler and Butler. Talk about fur flying! Read them, enjoy them, treasure them!

Because I`m not a young person I`d never happen to read any book of the Artemis Fowl series. But because I`m addicted to Nathaniel Parker`s voice and reading I have purchased every audiobook of this series and listened to them all several times and really enjoyed them. Maybe it`s mostly because of his marvellous voice and incredibly talented way of doing all the different characters. But I`m also really fascinated for the charming and exciting story of fairies, pixies, dwarfs, goblins and the young criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl and his family and friends.
Lucky me as I got acquainted with this lovely series by Eoin Colfer. The Atlantis Complex is number seven and by now the latest of the series but I hope it`s not the last. What a pity if he`s not going to write any further volumes for it ( for Nathaniel Parker to read! ).

This last opus of the Fowl series is not really up to the previous ones. Once again Artemis Fowl and Holly Short face an arch-villain. Once again they save both human and fairy worlds... and that's the trouble! "Once again". Nothing much there is new.
Still, a good story. But lets hope Eoin Colfer is brewing something really new... or not: Artemis was 12 and a kid-genius in the 1st book in 2001. It was fun. 10 years and seven books latter, he is 16, on the brink of manhood... maybe the time has come to let him live his life!
