Gregg Olsen tells the whole shocking story of this true crime in Cruel Deception.

In and out of hospitals since birth, angelic nine-month-old Morgan Reid finally succumbed to what appeared to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Morgan's Texas-born mother Tanya, a nurse and devoted wife, pulled up stakes with her grieving husband Jim, and moved on. It was the best way to put the past behind them. Until their son Michael, a boy who by all accounts was terrified of his mother, began showing signs of the same affliction that stole the life of his baby sister...

First, the suspicion: Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Then, Tanya was charged and convicted with felony child abuse of her son. She was later tried and ultimately convicted for first degree murder of Morgan. It would become a landmark trial that unfolded in a series of reversals and bizarre twists of fate as it gradually revealed another side of Tanya Reid--of her own troubling childhood and the dark secrets that drove a woman to the cruelest deception of all...

I live in rural Washington State (about a mile as the crow flies from Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard's infamous Starvation Heights sanatarium). My thriller, THE LAST THING SHE EVER DID was an Amazon Charts bestseller. LYING NEXT TO ME was a reader favorite, charting at No. 1 in the Kindle store and the bestseller's list at the Washington Post. My true crime book, IF YOU TELL, found a home on Amazon Charts for more than 140 weeks. In fact, it was the bestselling Kindle ebook of 2020 (and the second-bestselling of 2021). I've been a guest on Dateline NBC, NPR, Good Morning America, The Early Show, FOX News, CNN, Anderson Cooper, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, Extra, Access Hollywood, 20/20, Snapped, Deadly Women, William Shatner's Aftermath, and A&E's Biography. The author was excellent in his presentation of the case. It is well written and has documentation to support his thesis. MSBP is unfortunately misdiagnosed and results with children dying

I am returning this book for replacement as after page 344, next 16 pages are of another book. Never seen anything like that.
I am disappointed at the amount of errors - specifically last names, dates and places. How can the proofreading be that sloppy? There is quite a few repetitions but it does not take away from how interesting and horrifying the story is.

I’m a crime junky and LOVE true crime stories. Very sad to hear a lot of these stories and think there are these types of people out there. But a great read otherwise.

As a Gregg Olsen fan, I expected nothing less than great when I started this book. It did not disappoint. I was unfamiliar with the Tanya Reid case and was horrified and completely invested as I read. Well written, informative, and hard-to-put-down. On to the next G.O. read!

I hate rating books this low, but while the case is interesting, the details are repeated over and over and over again.

Detailed medical records and interviews and case notes again and again. During the events, during investigation, the court room, each time a witness is interviewed. It's incredibly tedious. The book could have been half this length.

I'm personally not a fan of reading reports and prefer to hear the story, so if you're looking for that I would skip this one.

This book is about a mother named Tanya that seems to have children with apnea problems. Why do these babies just stop breathing and have to be revived by their mother? Is it possible Tanya is the problem? This was a great insight into MSBP. The first part of the book was hard to follow as the parents were all over the place, so many different doctors, characters etc. But once I got passed that, I was able to follow who was who. Great read

5.0 out of 5 stars Tanya's multi twisted beliefs????
Reviewed in Australia on June 23, 2014
Greg Olsen is a brilliant researcher as he gets to the depth and detail unweavering the minds and secrets of those whom eventually are guilty. To discover Tanya guilty or not guilty consumed an open pit for the prosecutor. Half way through this story I'm in two minds that a mother can give or take a life in seconds. Are these facts true or false? It is an overwhelming and powerful story. Thanks goes to those whom continually cared, supported and took action against this hidden crime called MSBY.

A well written account of a story that is tragic on so many levels. No victors here, just a sad, sad account of familial devastation.

Cannot imagine a patent purposely harming their child to seek attention. A severe form of child abuse that is completely self serving.
