Tarot, Destined, The Fool's Journey

Destined, a novel of the Tarot

Gail Cleare first became interested in various methods of divination when she discovered fantasy fiction as a teenager. She studied the Tarot cards, the I Ching (aka the Book of Changes), and Rune Stones. During the early days of the Internet, she joined AOL's Crystal Ball Forum and hosted a popular chat room there offering free Tarot readings, live online. When she decided to write her first novel, the story of a young woman's spiritual coming-of-age journey, the Tarot's Major Arcana immediately came to mind as an ideal device for structuring the book. These twenty-two cards describe sequential steps on the path to enlightenment known as "The Fool's Journey," beginning with card number zero, the Fool, and ending with card number twenty-one, the World. The chapters of DESTINED, a Novel of the Tarot, follow the same path, and readers travel along with Emily, Cleare's heroine, as she finds her way toward community, spirit and love.

More About the Author

Gail Cleare has written for magazines, newspapers, and Fortune 50 companies. Her award-winning ad agency represented the creators of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She was the turtle Leonardo's date for the world premier of the second movie, and got to wear a black evening gown and sparkly shoes. When Gail hosted the Tarot room for AOL, she also wrote a monthly column for the cooking forum called "I Love Chocolate," and hosted a popular live chat by that name. She interviewed chefs, manufacturers and chocolatiers, and was co-producer of a Massachusetts event called The Chocolate Lovers' Festival, which appropriately took place the weekend before Valentine's Day. This experience came in handy when she decided to set her third novel, a contemporary romance, in a restaurant called The Three Chocolatiers. Several of the recipes Gail developed for the story are included in the book, and are featured in a chocolate cookbook downloadable from her website as a free PDF.

From Publishers Weekly

Publishers Weekly says:
"Each chapter of this unassuming novel is illustrated with a card from the tarot, and the contents of each section are loosely related to the meaning of the corresponding card. Cleare's narrative follows Emily, a young woman on a path of self-realization and awakening.... The novel is well plotted. Readers already interested in the tarot and its uses for divination will enjoy Cleare's serious meditations on the meanings of the cards, and the way the tarot plays out in Emily's life. What's more, Cleare offers a little bit of self-help and a little bit of chick lit, packaged together with a positive, make-your-own-destiny message: a pleasant, comforting read."

This book was fantastic! I know you might be thrown off a little by all the Tarot stuff but it's not all about Tarot. It's about a girl who goes through a new journey and experiences everything that the Major Arcana of the Tarot can explain. I love how the chapters are titled after the Major Arcana of the Tarot and she surely goes through her share of experiences. There is so much more to the main characters then what first meets the eyes. Sure she works in a bookstore and it has a swoon worthy romance but it also has depth and I was able to finish it within a day. I loved this novel and it was a treat to read and I can't wait to read the author's other works. Highly recommended!😁📚❤

I never expected to select a book about tarot, the occult, or even psychic phenomena (although I have read some Stephen King, so perhaps that's a bit unfair), I tend to lean toward testosterone infused thrillers, historical novels, and humor. And, let me admit too that I tend to favor male authors by a ratio of about 4:1. But, a friend suggested I try this one and I have to confess I was drawn-in from the start, became instantly invested in the protagonist, and found myself enjoying a quirky and delightful journey in a world unlike any I've ever experienced. Cleare's crisp language and fresh storytelling entertains, informs, and enthralls on many levels at once. A MUST read!

This isn't an edge of your seat or quick read. It's more of a meandering read that does in fact lead you through the major arcane of the tarot. Each part of the story correponds to a tarot card, which is unique and fun in its own way. The characters are obviously interesting enough to keep the reader coming back. The magickal theme is a plus. It really is a book about creating your own path and manifesting your own destiny. It's also a nice slice-of-life type story with elements of romance and chick-lit. My only quibbles were the whole ecological/green living preachy parts were a bit nauseating at times, the shameless plugging of Starhawk and The Secret was a bit of an eye-roll (for me anyway) and the main character, for as young as she was and from the alleged background she came, certainly had some refined upper-class tastes that I found a bit incongruent to the underlying theme of the story. It was just a bit jolting is all. Despite the latter, it was a worthwhile read and {{SPOILER}} is a nice happily-ever-after.

I really, really liked this book! The author might not like it to be called a fairy tale, but the magical realism just appealed to me a lot. The characters were so well defined and real, I wanted to meet them all and go to work in that book/antique shop myself! I really like the links to the Tarot as I have several of these fascinating decks myself, and it was really fun to think about the events in the story in the context of the arcana cards. I think she covered all the eco/green issues of the day, maybe overly much, but then they are all pretty important and relevant. And I happen to like the point of view about creating one's own destiny. A very fun read!

I'm familiar with tarot, so I bought this book to see how the author wove a story using the soul's path through the major arcana.
The characters are likeable. The family vibe of the neighborhood is quaint, if utopian-like.
I am spiritually minded person, so the main theme of this story appealed to me enough to keep reading. However, the liberal propaganda nearly had me deleting this book.
I don't mind being reminded of alternative energies, conservation and recycling, or climatic changes. I will go nuts if I hear mention of Al Gore, like he's a god.
All said, mostly unsaid, I would not recommend this book to political conservatives. I read this book until there were only a few pages left. After reading gushing accounts of Hillary Clinton (not a goddess), I lost whatever interest I had left in the story.
This book is listed in the paranormal romance section. It is not paranormal, and barely a romance.

I have just finished reading this book and feel it was a wonderful read. No, I did not finish it in one to three days which is normal for me but took my time and digested everything that Gail was including in the story as Emily travels from The Fool to The World card. This story is about Emily's rite of passage, coming to terms with herself and others. How just one act can influence others, magical, mystical, or synchronicity it does happen just think about it.

I do not believe that every good story must be filled with sex or deep plots in order for it to be an enjoyable read, but this is just my opinion. Destined has a story line, believable characters, that I would have enjoyed meeting. As I read the chapters slowly,I did feel that I was able to get to know them and their families. Sometimes a very good relaxing read just needs to be enjoyable. This book certainly was for me. I am giving this book five stars.

I've got to say, my first take on Destined was that it was too good to be true. Everyone was either nice from the get-go or someone who would obviously come around as I followed the sunshiny plot.

But I read the book all the way through in a couple of hours because I loved the characters and couldn't put it down. And by now it's not only my favorite tarot novel, it's got pages coming out from rereading and I could really use a new copy! The tarot chapter headings work well and the tarot readings within the book are spot on. Very believable.

This is one of those light hearted romances where good champions one hundred percent of the time. The story centers around a shop in an area full of many different ethnic families--but they all love each other despite their differences and go out of their way to help each other--no crisis is too big for this group. Every chapter starts with an explanation of a tarot card and then, surprise, surprise the following chapter shows how this card reflects in real life. While it was a little "white bread" for me--a fun read, a good take to the beach kind of book that keeps your interest and makes you feel better about the world--if you want or need (as I did) to spend some time looking at life with rose tinted glasses I highly recommend this book.A good light read which I thoroughly enjoyed.
