Bayou Moon: A Mystery Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 145 ratings

Old secrets are rising up to haunt the inhabitants of Louisiana's small, rustic St. Germaine Parish, where no one is quite who they seem, and restless spirits are rumored to roam the woods and the antebellum mansion of the town's richest family, the St. Michels.

Successful New York City artist Mignon Thibeaux doesn't believe in ghosts, but even she can't resist the rumors that the St. Michel mansion may be haunted, especially since its owner, Luc St. Michel, was the same man whom her mother ran off with 25 years ago before disappearing into thin air. Convinced that there was more to her mother's strange departure, Mignon returns to her hometown of LaValle, Louisiana to investigate. Once there, she doesn't know who she can trust - from the handsome, rugged sheriff who seems to have his own agenda, the guarded Louisiana Supreme Court judge who hides behind a wall of lies, and finally to Eleanor St. Michel, Luc's vindictive wife, who is relentless in her pursuit of the supernatural, convinced that the séances she hosts in the dead of night will appease the spirits and put an end to the hauntings.

Bayou Moon is a gripping tale of murder, revenge, and voodoo in small town Louisiana that captures all the ambience and charm of the rural South. Someone has a secret that must be kept hidden, and God help the one who tries to uncover it...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Welcome to La Valle, Louisiana, bayou country, where trees drip with Spanish moss and ghosts walk the wetlands in the moonlit night. Such is the setting for Bevill's undistinguished first novel, which mixes the occult with a possible double murder, decades old. World-renowned painter Mignon Thibeaux returns to La Valle, where she was born and lived a poor, but happy, childhood until she was seven years old and her world fell apart. Character development takes a back seat in a story full of "discernments," "s‚ances" and "spiritual cleansings." Despite warnings, Mignon succeeds in insinuating herself into the bosom of the St. Michel family. Her goal: to find out what happened to her mother, Garlande Thibeaux, and Luc St. Michel, her mother's lover. Gossip has always had it that Luc and Garlande ran off to some isolated place far away; or that Luc's wife, Eleanor, killed the couple and hid the bodies well. The local sheriff evicted Mignon's father, Ruff, and his young daughter from their tiny cabin the evening Luc and Garlande disappeared. An angst-filled ending with some hold-your-breath moments brings us, finally, to an understanding of the mystery's central issues.

From Library Journal

This first novel combines a small-town Louisiana setting, plantation decadence, romance, family scandal, and murder into a delicious gumbo. A successful New York artist, Mignon Thibeaux returns to her hometown 25 years after her mother ran away with a La Valle plantation owner. At first, older folks think that she is her mother, and she is strangely embraced by her mother's lover's ex. Eleanor St. Michel wants relief from the ghost that haunts her gardens, but the beautiful Mignon has her own agenda: she believes her mother was murdered. Entrancing subject matter, realistic characterization, and riveting plot make this a strongly recommended choice for most mystery collections.

Mix one part Southern-gothic with one part Southern charm, add a dash of romantic suspense and a pinch of voodoo, and you’ve got “Bayou Moon”. Migon Thibeaux, now a successful artist, moves back to the small Louisiana town where she was born, in hopes of solving the mystery of her mother – who supposedly ran off with her lover when Mignon was just a little girl. This was an incredibly well-developed novel, and although it does not end in a cliffhanger, I strongly recommend reading the sequel “Crimson Bayou” when you’re finished – if you’re anything like me, you’ll be excited to return to Louisiana with Ms. Bevill!

Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and read it in less that two days. Mignon is a likable character, and the creepy, southern-Goth setting is awesome. While parts of the puzzle were a little predictable, there were quite a few pieces that were pleasantly surprising. I am a fan of her books, and look forward to more from her.

I bought this book because I had read another series from the author, and I love New Orleans and the bayou. It did not disappoint. There were 3 main characters, and several secondary characters, all whom were made very real by the author. The storyline was plausible and very intriguing. This was s “read-at-work-at-lunch” book, but I wasn’t able to do that; I kept going back to it, and finished it…at home! I love a book I can’t let go of!!

Bayou Moon by C L Bevil. Successful New York artist Mignon Thibeaux returns for first time in 25 years to her birthplace of LaValle parish in Louisiana to find out what happened to her mother who had, reportedly , run off with the head of the local richest family. Her return stirs up quite a hornets nest.

Once it got going it was a very good read, the only thing I did not like was the way every chapter was started with a rhyme. This is one of the main fault with her books.
