The Blood Books are now available in "Blood Ties" TV tie-in editions. View our TV tie-in feature page here here.

An evil being has been sealed away for centuries in a sarcophagus never meant to be opened, waiting patiently for his chance to rise again. Now, brought to the Egyptology Department of Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum, the seals and spells that imprisoned him chipped away from his discoverers, he has reached forth to claim the minds and souls of Toronto’s unsuspecting citizens. And only three people had any sense that something was wrong….

For Henry Fitzroy, it began with terrifying images of the sun, a marker of death for a vampire. Fearing for his sanity, he turns to his sometimes-lover, private investigator Vicki Taylor, for help. As the two struggle to cope with Henry’s obsession, Vicki’s closest friend and former partner Mike Celluci, is following up on two mysterious deaths at the museum, certain that a force from beyond the grave is responsible for everything.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A mummy stalks the streets of modern Toronto in this third outing for ex-cop Vicki Nelson and her vampire partner.

Review

"Entertaining characters, wry humor, crazy plots, glimpses of horror, the occult, romance, and just a dollop of sex."—VOYA

"The novel [has] an unexpected serious theme that helps raise it above the crowd. It may be funny, often lighthearted and highly entertaining, but it's
more than just another 'light' fantasy."—Locus

"A yummy concoction of equal parts fantasy and mystery, throwing in a splash of humor and a dash of romance to beguile the palate quite delightfully.... Ms. Huff manages to develop all her different plot threads to marvelous effect. How could anyone resist this vastly entertaining pastiche?"—RT Book Reviews

"A fine mix of the detective story with the supernatural, and easily Huff's best novel to date....
A rousing adventure tale with likable characters and an interesting setting."—Science Fiction Chronicle

"The author of the
Blood novels has once again proven herself a master of urban fantasy."—Library Journal

"Huff tells a great story, but never takes herself or it too seriously. She consciously borrows elements from other books as well as movies, comics, and mythology and combines them with her own great imagination to make a thoroughly satisfying story."—

These novels exploring how fantasy monsters most of us are familiar with fight it out in modern Toronto and its surroundings gave a lot of fun factors going for them. Most of us are somewhat versed in how they act based on generations of novels and horror films staring vampires, demons, werewolves and mummy's who stalk the world in search of new victims. Tanya Huff has just a unique enough flavor to make these old standards feel new and exciting.

I enjoyed every minute of this book. I loved the TV series and now I wish the series had continued. I'm glad I bought the series. I've thoroughly enjoyed every word read.

I've read better books, and I've read worse. I just watched the Blood Lines series and thought the book would be better. It was, and I'm glad I bought it, but I'll probably never read it again. I don't like the typical strong but still sexy female reporter/detective/cop who has two or three men chasing her because she's just so damn wonderful. At this point, it's too cliche for me to handle. Her little eye tragedy didn't add much either, though I figured it would.

Henry is the only real interesting character in the whole story, and we didn't get to see much of him in the book. Also, speaking of Henry, the main character believes he's a vampire just way too easily.

Okay book overall

memorable characters, good to great plots, very interesting juxtaposition of myth and modern technology. Very realistic feeling settings, nice to have settings in Canada (for a change!), even though I'm not Canadian!

I enjoy this series very much. Tolerated the tv show, but Really loved the entire Blood set of books. Got them for Kindle when the Smoke trilogy came out. All of the books are good vampire/human/ghost stories. Love Tanya Huff!

I loved this book. The mummy felt real and it had clear motives for what it did. The characters played wonderfully against each other. I couldn't put the book down till the end. And then I started breathing again! Buy this and you will enjoy yourself.

The character Vicki is so badass that I cannot help but keep reading her exploits. Her two beaus are so besotted that the supernatural bad guys don't stand a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner

I bought the whole series after having watched Blood Ties on Prime. The show unfortunately was cancelled after one season but it did mention that it was based on Tanya Huff's Vicky Nelson books. Google did his magic and I found these books. I read almost one a day. It's a dynamic who'd done it with a vampire twist, some romance and loads and loads of witty banter. Loved the whole series.

4.0 out of 5 stars good mummy tale...
Reviewed in Canada on May 29, 2014
I'm a sucker for a mummy story and this is a good one. The love triangle between Vicki, Henry and Celluci carries on through some serious danger to Vicki and provincial legislators. This book has some moments of genuine suspense and a gritty prison sequence that is disturbing and perhaps a bit out of tone for the series. However, like all books in this series the Toronto setting is well done and it is worth the read.
