The Voice of Knowledge: A Practical Guide to Inner Peace (A Toltec Wisdom Book) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 3,521 ratings

In The Voice of Knowledge, Miguel Ruiz reminds us of a profound and simple truth: The only way to end our emotional suffering and restore our joy in living is to stop believing in lies — mainly about ourselves.

Before we learn to speak, our true nature is to love and be happy, to explore and enjoy life. As little children, we are completely authentic. Our actions are guided by instinct and emotions; we listen to the silent voice of our integrity. Once we learn a language, the people around us hook our attention and program us with knowledge. But that knowledge is contaminated with lies.

With our attention focused on all the knowledge in our head, we no longer perceive the world through the eyes of love; we only perceive what we have learned to believe. The voice of knowledge comes alive inside our head, and what is that voice telling us? Mostly lies. That voice never stops talking, judging, gossiping, and abusing us. It constantly sabotages our happiness and keeps us from enjoying a reality of truth and love.

Ruiz shows us how to recover the silent voice of our integrity and find inner peace. When the voice of knowledge no longer controls us, our life becomes an expression of our authentic self, just as it was before we learned to speak. Then we return to the truth, we return to love, and we live in happiness again.

Ruiz changes the way we perceive ourselves, and the way we perceive other people. Then he opens the door to a reality that we once perceived when we were one and two years old — a reality of truth, love, and joy.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

As little children we know how to live in the moment and be completely authentic. But then something damaging happens to us, according to author Don Miguel Ruiz: we are given "knowledge" about how to live in the world. Parents tell us how to behave in order to be a "good" boy or girl. Teachers tell us what it takes to be a "winner" or a "successful" adult. This collective "voice of knowledge" is not only false--it is often poisonous, explains Ruiz, bestselling author of The Four Agreements. It makes us believe that "I am not the way I should be; it is not okay to be me." Drawing upon the story of Adam and Eve, Ruiz refers to the forbidden tree of knowledge and likens the abandonment of the true self to the fall from heaven. What Ruiz calls "the voice of knowledge" others spiritual teachers might call ego--the hidden and carefully defended belief system that prevents us from living and expressing who we really are. "The structure of our knowledge makes us feel safe….When we discover that we are not what we believe we are, the foundation of our entire reality begins to collapse." In the Toltec tradition, Ruiz says every human is an artist, "and the supreme art is the expression of the beauty of our spirit." He explains that there are two kinds of artists: "the ones who create their story without awareness, and the ones who recover awareness and create their story with truth and love." The recovering of awareness is what this fourth book in the Toltec Wisdom series is all about. This makes for a good bedside spiritual growth book. Each chapter closes with "Points to Ponder"--summary thoughts to sleep upon as you create the more authentic story of your life. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly

With more than 2.7 million copies of his The Four Agreements sold, Ruiz returns to readers with a new volume that presents his latest thoughts on the ways and means of inner knowledge and healing. Written in the first person with frequent apostrophic addresses ("You need to challenge every belief that you use to judge yourself, to reject yourself, to make yourself little"), the book moves gracefully and anecdotally from "Adam and Eve: The Story from a Different Point of View" to "The Tree of Life: The Story Comes Full Circle," with 10 chapters in between, including "The Lie of Our Imperfection," a chapter that covers "emotional pain as a symptom of abuse" and one on "Writing Our Story with Love," with frequent stops for "Points to Ponder." For Ruiz, life can be a matter of storytelling, to ourselves and to others. His reflections on the process of how people tell these stories, and how they can change their narratives, draw on the lore of his native Mexico and feel both centered and earned.

I like to read this author’s books because he has an unerring way of making us want to incorporate faith into our daily lives. His type of faith differs from mine (theologically), but it is infused with the earnest search for truth in the divine.

A spiritual advisor friend of mine referred me to this book. I love The Four Agreements, so I immediately bought The Voice of Knowledge audiobook. I listened to it two times and then bought the paperback. I've been reciting mantras from this book daily, and my mind is much quieter. This book is a gamechanger if you let it be.

Another wonderful book by don Miguel Ruiz. Like all his works, it speaks best for itself. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, and that is a rare thing. If you give it a chance you will eventually realize there is an incredible amount of highly sophisticated wisdom distilled in this book, despite being entirely readable for people with no knowledge of philosophy.

It is yet another attempt by Ruiz to help people regain faith in themselves and to see the truth while letting go of preconceptions and lies that hold us back and make us suffer pointlessly. Anyone who makes a genuine effort will agree that he succeeds in giving anyone many wonderful psychological tools for precisely this purpose.

We are all stronger and more capable than we realize--just give your best effort and you'll realize it's true.

It’s an interesting read that’s for sure. Worth taking notes and it does leave you with some self reflection. The information is common knowledge but somehow you just see it differently when you read his words. This is the first book of his I’ve ever picked up due to a recommendation so I’m not a hard believer or anything but I still could follow the reasoning and semi sound logic that comes from his voice.

This book, this message was such a gift to my spiritual development. It was wholesome, yet simple and resonated well with my soul. I completed it in two sittings and now understand what I need to do from here. My partner asked what I was reading that had my attention so deeply. I shared some passages that I believed would resonate with him and he was stunned! Completely intrigued, he is now going to read it for himself. Now I'm excited to go deeper with the four agreements once that book arrives (glad I read this one first). There's something in this book for everybody. I highly recommend!

After the Four Agreements which is also a great book, I was wondering what else this author could teach me. Well, I'm starting the Mastery of Love right away.
