Born in the Bronx, Stefan Petrucha spent his formative years moving between the big city and the suburbs, both of which made him prefer escapism.

A fan of comic books, science fiction and horror since learning to read, in high school and college he added a love for all sorts of literary work, eventually learning that the very best fiction always brings you back to reality, so, really, there's no way out.

An obsessive compulsion to create his own stories began at age ten and has since taken many forms, including novels, comics and video productions. At times, the need to pay the bills made him a tech writer, an educational writer, a public relations writer and an editor for trade journals, but fiction, in all its forms, has always been his passion. Every year he's made a living at that, he counts a lucky one. Fortunately, there've been many.

Ripper, written by Stefan Petrucha, is a gripping murder mystery that takes place in New York City during the late 1890’s. The story follows Carver Young, a 14 year old orphan who is on a quest to find his father’s true identity; and, at the same time, look for the monster responsible for murdering women in the Big Apple. The tone of the novel is thrilling and mysterious; while the mood of the story is suspenseful and intense. The point of view the readers will experience is 3rd person omniscient, an all knowing point of view. Along with Carver being the main protagonist, other main characters include: Delia, a friend of Carver who grew up with him at Ellis orphanage; Finn, Carver’s bully from Ellis orphanage who later becomes an ally; Septimus Tudd, one of main men who runs The New Pinkerton’s Agency; and Mr. Hawking, Carver’s mentor who adopts Carver and introduces him to the detective lifestyle. The story in Ripper is intended for an audience who loves solving mysteries with the pieces and clues they find. The book is also an ideal choice for those who want to be a part of an entertaining and thrilling ride. In general, I loved the book because the concept of Jack the Ripper continuing his killing in New York is such an interesting idea. I also love the characters because each one is interesting in their own way. Most of the characters are static and do not remain the same from the beginning to the end of the novel. My only complaint is that the book wasn’t really creepy or terrifying. With a story involving Jack the Ripper, the book could have benefited from a scarier mood. I agree with the purpose of the novel because the idea of Saucy Jack traveling to America is chilling, yet surreal at the same time. In my opinion, I thought the author did a fantastic job of writing the book because the text and dialogue were clearly stated and the book was easy to read. Again, the book could have improved from a dark and creepier mood. This change would’ve helped because a darker added to a murder mystery would create a terrifying effect. Overall, the book was exciting, the characters were great, and the author did an amazing job of writing the book. I recommend this book to those who love adrenaline rushes.

Stefan Petrucha’s Ripper takes the reader on a wild ride when a series of killings start to occur in late 1800’s New York City that resemble Jack the Ripper. This historical fiction novel is told through the first person view point of a young, cunning boy named Carver Young who was abandoned at Ellis Orphanage as a baby and all he wants is to find out who he really is by finding his parents. The want-to-be detective discovers a mysterious note from his father which Carver then writes to Roosevelt, the new police commissioner, in hopes of finding his father. Adoption day leaves Carver hoping Roosevelt will show up but alas he doesn’t and Carver is adopted by a gnomish looking fellow. This man turns out to be Albert Hawking, a famous detective of the Pinkerton Agency. Carver is now apprenticed to Hawking and looking for his father. He is accompanied on his journey by his friend Delia from Ellis Orphanage, his rival from Ellis Orphanage Finn, and New Pinkerton Agents such as Septimus Tudd, Emeril, and Jackson. The search for his father leads him into a whirlwind of mystery and emotions that he probably would have rather not discovered.

The targeted audience includes teens and adults. As for the tone, it is informal yet comical and serious, the tone seems to switch depending on the varying situations. The mood is hopeful yet sympathetic at times because it leaves the reader hoping for something to happen and having sympathy for not only Carver but other interesting characters. This book is one of the best books I’ve ever read and Stefen Petrucha was genius in making sure the reader was always intrigued. I enjoyed most that it kept you guessing, you’d think you had it figured out then there would be a total plot twist. Also, I liked the incorporation of historical facts and a brilliant story line. As for the main purpose of the novel I do agree that someone can ultimately choose who they want to be and no one, not even blood, can determine who you are as an individual because everyone is different. The one thing I'd change is there are certain parts where the foreshadowing is too obvious which took away the excitement and if changed would pull the reader in more. All in all, an amazing novel.

Stefan Petrucha's Ripper is an enthralling murder mystery/historical fiction based off of the idea that Jack the Ripper could have fled to New York City and continued his murders there in the 1890's. The story is told from the point of view of Carver, an orphan who wants to be a detective. Carver discovers a letter from his long lost father that soon leads him to the adventure of a lifetime. He gets adopted by Mr. Hawking, who is a detective of sorts at the New Pinkerton agency. He quickly gets wrapped up in the ripper case which eventually leads to him discovering the killer. Petrucha does a fantastic job of intertwining real people and events with an imaginary story-line in order to make a riveting historical fiction. This book is primarily aimed at teenagers, though anybody who enjoys historical fiction would also like this book. Personally, I enjoyed the notion of Jack the Ripper leaving London to continue his murders elsewhere. Not only is it quite plausible, but it is also a very enjoyable story-line. For the most part, I enjoyed the whole book. I loved how Petrucha was able to take intertwine real people, events, and objects and make them into things of his own. Though I deal feel as if there were a few times where the plot jumped too drastically and some events were glossed over too much. This caused a few events to not make much sense, but overall it was all right. The book was cleverly written and the author did a good job getting into the mindset of the character Jack the Ripper. Petrucha was able to come up with many victims and actions that matched the profile of the real Ripper perfectly.
