Dream Lake: A Friday Harbor Novel Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,199 ratings

In New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas's Dream Lake, readers well enter the world of Friday Harbor, an enchanting town in the Pacific Northwest where things are not quite as they seem and where true love might just have a ghost of a chance...

They say that opposites attract. But what happens when one of them has been devastated by betrayal and the other is so damaged and jaded that his heart is made of stone?

Alex Nolan is about as bitter and cynical as they come. One of three Nolan brothers who call Friday Harbor home, he's nothing like Sam or Mark. They actually believe in love; they think the risk of pain is worth the chance of happiness. But Alex battles his demons with the help of a whiskey bottle, and he lives in his own private hell. And then, a ghost shows up. Only Alex can see him. Has Alex finally crossed over the threshold to insanity?

Zoë Hoffman is as gentle and romantic as they come. When she meets the startlingly gorgeous Alex Nolan, all her instincts tell her to run. Even Alex tells her to run. But something in him calls to Zoë, and she forces him to take a look at his life with a clear eye and to open his mind to the possibility that love isn't for the foolish.

The ghost has been existing in the half-light of this world for decades. He doesn't know who he is, or why he is stuck in the Nolans' Victorian house. All he knows is that he loved a girl once. And Alex and Zoë hold the key to unlocking a mystery that keeps him trapped here.

Zoë and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark, and sometimes love can reach beyond time, space, and reason to take hold of hearts that yearn for it...

There will be tears, but a lot of love, laughter and wisdom. A lovely cozy read, in a great series by a wonderful author. I have also read every book she has written (that I could get my hands on, and now am catching up with kindle specials). These take place in the PNW if you like location pieces, but the charming characters could be anywhere. I think these are also lovely beach reads, and are without violence, graphic sex or villains. enjoyable reads.

Every once in awhile I run into a romance that hits close to home. It's probably not hard to figure out how to achieve that if you sit and watch who is buying them at the bookstore-I've seen myself there-older, plump, so clearly eating and cooking, could use desperately a week at an art themed bed and breakfast in a sea side island setting, taking care of elderly family members, dealing with those that are emotionally unavailable, ghosts of the past in their heads. Facing a few more years.
For me this was a morning read, a long cry and just a really strange place to put together a lot of my own admittedly far more pathetic current themes. (including saying out loud-"compared to the people he knows and grew up with you were a poor, pathetic, uninteresting rube-as if speaking into my past)
I take care of my mother, I cook, I wish I could renovate a place with a gorgeous carpenter, certainly a love of Victorians, my mother losing daily to TIA's, my feelings of struggles with ghosts of the past-like knowing what her death will be like after sacrificing 5 years from 19 on to help my grandmother pass alone/poor, but to review the book.
This is the story of the third brother (liked all the books) in an alcoholic family where to cope he had no expectations and basically was invisible.Grew up hard. For reasons I don't understand, but accept as the plot, Alex is drinking heavily after a divorce because he married someone he has no feelings for-as a kind of object-but it certainly went poorly because he's lost everything in the divorce. So he's drinking himself into oblivion. He doesn't want to feel. I never understand that-I suppose I don't really understand alcohol. Zoe is so perfectly formed no man can resist seeing her as other than a kitten. I suppose that should offend but I was thinking about her grandmother-the story has a grandmother who is coping with the last days in dementia and Zoe in the story will take on her care. (not like the rest of us with no dollars but like we would if we could with a house Alex restores). Food that Zoe makes is magic and described in a lovely way. She's terrific in a kitchen. Alex is good in the sack. We all have our demons so Alex has a friendly ghost not named Casper. That ghost will unravel his story with Alex's help and eventually the story comes to a very nice conclusion.

In a way it's a very simple story. Not sure why but to me very touching. I felt better about taking care of mom after I read it. Better about drunks, better about ghosts, better about stain glass windows, unwanted pregnancies, miscarriages, dying, existentialism, aprons, the past, car wrecks, the soul, foolish mistakes, muffins and eating cobbler.

I rarely give 5 stars. This was fun, romantic and tender. Enjoy the ride of a well written book and a great storyteller

I will admit that I was a little reluctant about reading the second installment of this series. The previous book Rainshadow Road was a little off putting with the magical element added in there. I like Sci-Fi when I'm setting out to read it but not when I'm expecting a good romance with its typical problems the characters face. Once I got into it I realized this wouldn't be like the previous book. I enjoyed it so much I read it in one day!

Dream Lake had a little of the mystical element dealing with the ghost but I didn't find it quite so awkward in this book. While I really liked the plot line and the chemistry between the main characters Zoe and Alex it was the sub characters story that I loved most of all!! :) It had an element of the "Notebook" to it that I found irresistible! I won't say more because I don't want to ruin it for any other readers out there who haven't read it yet.

The way Zoe and Alex healed each other and accepted each other was part of what I found to be so wonderful between these two. No silly games or over the top drama just two people finding love in the other person. The way they contrast one another is also what makes their relationship so easy to accept and believe.

This book is also Very light on the "juicy" scenes but if I had a choice to sacrifice part of this story for more of those scenes I wouldn't take it! I don't really mind it anyhow her love scenes have become kind of like they were phoned in. I would rather have one good scene and a beautiful story then a rushed story and a lot of over flow on mediocre love scenes.

I'm reluctant to give a book 5 stars because how much can you really like a book. So no matter how much i may like it I will generally stop at 4 stars. This book however was so satisfying so beautifully written with such good characters and well paced that even though there was practically no love scenes I still loved this story anyway!

I highly recommend this book to romance readers.

I really liked this series Friday Harbor.
Lisa Kleypas in her books is sure to find a beautiful love story, with unique characters, couples who complement each other, friends and family that take care ... In addition to an idyllic setting. Anyway, all the best, positive and with a lot of imagination. Reading your stories makes life lighter.

Absolutely amazing just like all the books in this series. It is funny, and romantic and lovely and you just HAVE to read all 4 books when you started with one (I didn't even read them in order, but that didn't matter!)!

Une fois de plus LK nous entraîne dans son monde de rêve. Il y a beaucoup de poésie dans cet opus qui oscille entre romantisme et intrigue surréaliste.

I had already read the other books about the 2 brothers, and enjoyed them so much I got this one. She (the author) reminds me in ways of the Nora Roberts family trilogies, etc, so I knew it would be good. Her descriptions of the area made me want to be there! I recommend this to anyone who likes Lisa Keyplass
