Talmud Hullin: The Kosher Laws in English Kindle Edition

3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

To know what food is kosher, that is, fit to eat according to rabbinic Judaism, you must study the principles set forth in this English volume of the Babylonian Talmud Tractate Hullin - the biggest tractate in the Talmud.

This elegant new English edition of Hullin, adheres closely to the text so that the reader has a sense of the structure and balance of the original. Yet at the same time it conveys the flow of the legal arguments and debates, the dramatic unfolding of events in stories, and the sensitivities to words and language in the exegetical texts.

Its aim is to facilitate a smooth conversation between readers and the text so that, without consulting the original Hebrew and Aramaic version, they can appreciate the substantive meaning and recognize some major aspects of the style of the Talmudic text.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The critical question in evaluating this work, and Zahavy's contribution, is the quality of the translation. I am happy to report that it is an excellent translation. Zahavy has managed the difficult task of keeping to a literal rendition of the Aramaic and Mishnaic Hebrew of the original, while making excellent sense as one reads the English version alone." - Sigrid Peterson, Department of Religious Studies, University of Pennsylvania in Ioudaios Review, 1992

This series of the Soncino Babylonin Talmud is well presented. It is easy to navagate with the folios listed on the left hand side, a simple click takes you directly to the folio you are seeking. They are generally a good and reliable translation although there have been minor editorial changes to passages that Gentile readers may find offensive in their original form. Some of these are as minor as word changes, while others are in the form of footnotes added to mislead the reader as to the true meaning of the passage. It is for this reason i have not given it 5 stars, as I believe this is done to hide what Judaism actually teaches in regard to Gentiles. Most of these changes would not be noticable to the average reader.

There is the ability to highlight and bookmark passages for later reference.

I have used these volumes for research and have found them valuable for checking references and quotes.

I will certainly be downloading the other volumes in the series as they become available.

This series is taken from the excellent translation by Soncino. The translation is excellent. The other volumes of this series have folio pages in table of contents and are clearly labeled. In this volume, it is divided into chapters with folio pages hidden in the text which makes it difficult to find the folio pages quickly or easily. Still it is cheap and ready option to gain access to the Talmud and the price more then right.
