The Origins of Jewish Prayers (The Jewish Prayer Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.4 3.4 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

This book summarizes the origins of Jewish prayer in the first five centuries of the Common Era, known also as the epoch of early rabbinic Judaism, the time of the Mishnah and the Talmud, the era of the Tannaim and Amoraim, and the time of Jesus and early Christianity.

This book presents a detailed analysis of the textual evidence on the subject mainly from the books of the rabbis, the Mishnah, the Tosefta and the Talmud, that finds the seams of timelessness and recovers the outlines of the origins of the great prayers of the Jewish people.

Is excellent and well written volume about the history of prayer within Judaism. It reviews the primary sources in straight forward simple manner. It reviews Mishnah and Tosefta text in particular tractate Berakhot. He also he refers to archeological sources that related to prayer. This volume is written in accessible manner most people should be able read without a great deal of struggle. A knowledge of Mishnah and Tosefta or having access to them will it the book even more it accessible.
