Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Jennifer Louden, author of The Woman's Comfort Book, gives women a do-it-yourself guide for creating solitude. Because women tend to nurture relationships more than they nurture themselves, it is often a challenge for women to carve out the space and time they need for private renewal and reflection. Louden offers women inspiration and specific advice on how to retreat within their own homes, as well as how to create rejuvenating weekends and vacations. She even devotes a full chapter to the most pivotal stage of any retreat--the successful re-entry into home, family, and community.

From Library Journal

Louden (The Woman's Comfort Book, HarperSanFrancisco, 1992) has written a how-to book for women interested in getting in touch with themselves and working on specific issues by using a retreat format. She points out that a retreat is an attitude, not a specific place, and that it can last from less than an hour to several days. Lots of lists and cross references are provided to carefully plan and select the right ingredients for a successful retreat. This practical guide to an increasingly popular subject will be useful in public libraries where self-help and women's psychology titles are in demand.?Marguerite Mroz, Baltimore Cty. P.L.

This is a phenomenal book. I've had it for years and have used it as a trusted guide on several weekend-long solo retreats. Working with the different elements that Jennifer lays out has allowed me to have so many profound, surprising, and deeply nourishing experiences on retreat. There are sections to help you craft opening and closing rituals, things to read when you get stuck, and great suggestions for activities and themes. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and if you're considering going on retreat--do it!

Jennifer Louden's books are "self guided" supportive and empowering tools. Great resources for women (and men) who tend to be proactive when making life changes. They also make great gifts. I recently gave Jennifer's entire set to a friend for her 50th birthday. She's not one who takes time to read but she told me she enjoys the approach in this book. She went to the intention chart and picked a ritual that matched her needs and approach. It's a keeper.

Thought provoking, educational and very helpful. Am adapting to an early unplanned retirement, it was reassuring to see in writing that some of the exercises I had done on my own prior to learning about this book were right on target. This hook has accelerated and focused my progress. Thanks for a great guidebook. Have recommended it to friends who are also doing self improvement work.

I owned this book some years ago and gave it to a friend. I am planning a retreat for myself and wanted the wonderful suggestions and resources that Ms Louden gives. An excellent guide for all kinds of retreats from a 5 minute middle-of-the-day refresher to much longer withdrawals from the world. She covers many different kinds of retreat. All of them are nuturing, comforting and safe. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading through some of this book and it has helped me to understand it isn't all about work and responsibilities 24/7. I need time and space for me as well.
