State of Anger (excerpt)

October 1987 —

Indianapolis, Indiana

The cab driver was one of the nine victims—other than the pilot—who actually saw it coming. Unfortunately, he was also the first to die. By the time he saw it, he knew it was too late for himself or anyone else. He didn’t see their end, only his own, but he knew they were gone, their clocks, like his own, coming to an end on a final tick or tock they otherwise would have never bothered to notice, much less count.

The other eight victims stood in the lobby of the Airport Ramada Inn at the Indianapolis International Airport. Six of them were guests waiting to settle their account and check out of the hotel, the other two were hotel employees coming off the night shift. One of the guests had called for a cab even though it was a ridiculously short ride across the street to the airport departure area. Had the weather cooperated this October morning, the hotel guest could have walked to the departure area instead of taking a cab. But the sky remained cloudy, with a light mist in the air, so the cabbie made nine.

Nine people have thirty-seconds to live.

One of the hotel guests at the front of the line was disputing a charge on his itemized bill. The hotel clerk tried to reverse the charge but failed, the computer telling her she needed authorization from the manager to deduct the proper amount. She tucked a lock of red hair behind her ear and smiled at the man on the other side of the counter and informed him the manager was on the way. The man consulted his watch and smiled back at the pretty redheaded woman, wondering how old she might be. He noticed the name badge on her jacket. Sara. He also noticed the plain silver wedding band on her finger and felt his face flush a bit as she caught his silent inquiry of her marital status. It was one of those little everyday life moments…and it was about to end.

Nine people now have only twenty-seconds to live. From overhead the sound of an aircraft’s jet engine is all but ignored by the people in the lobby. It is an airport, after all. The hotel manager came around the corner and greeted the guest at the front of the line by name. She offered an apology as she entered her approval code into the computer. From the time she appeared, entered the code, and reversed the charge, only eighteen-seconds had elapsed. It was coming. The cabbie saw it.

Nine people have two-seconds to live...

Great story, Excellent writing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved how it all tied together! This was one of the better novels I've read in a while. The mystery itself was woven in nicely with good character development. I also enjoyed how it went from one character's point of view to another character's p.o.v. in the next chapter. It let us readers see the insight behind the actions and motives of different characters. -- Amazon Verified Reader Review

Smart, Funny & Addictive! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is my first time reading anything by this author but it will not be my last. A great read. Loved the characters & the dialogue. Well written and a exciting story. A really smart book and interesting writing style. Get this one. -- Amazon Verified Reader Review

What a great read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The author put together a well-written, logical, believable storyline that most importantly for me was not predictable as most other "thrillers" I have read. This book reminds me a lot of Nelson Demille--just as well-written and smattered with the same style of humor and sarcasm at times. Great read and I highly recommend it. -- Amazon Verified Reader Review

Love the characters in this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The story line always had me guessing what was going to happen next. Thumbs up!-- Amazon Verified Reader Review

One solid well written book. Its full of twists and turns and you don't know who the bad guys really are until the end. Just a super read.

Virgil Jones is the number two behind Cora LaRue who heads the Major Crimes Unit for the State of Indiana. Cora is tough as nails and savvy as hell. She's the most powerful woman in the State. Jonesy is her go to cop. They work quite well together.

Outside of two years in the military during the first Gulf war, Jonesy has worked in law enforcement his whole life. His dad was the Sheriff of Marion county until he retired two years ago.

Jonesy and his team land in one hell of a murder mess. They have a sniper killing people all over the city. Ordinary working people. Two nurses, a bank president, one blind man and a naked woman swimming in her pool.

One of those killed was directly across from the Gov's mansion. An Indiana State Trooper was also killed at that site. Jonesy wonders if the Gov may be next.

Lots of interesting folks who could be involved the whole mess.

One is Rev Samuel Pate. This guy is a televangalist. He's quite well know and had dealing with the murdered bank president. His organization got a five million dollar loan from the Presidents bank. Pate also happens to be married to an old flame of Jonesey's. He hasn't seen her in years and is rather surprised to find her married to Pate. Just one more mystery.

The loan seemed rather odd to Jonesy since the Rev's Texas church burned to the ground and insurance payed out one million to the Rev. Of course the insurance company is under investigation by Texas authorities. Kinda odd that another bank would loan Pate that kind of money with all those questions in Texas.

He also has his boyhood friend Murton on site. Murt and Jonesy grew up together and were inseperable as young men. He and Murt were in the military together and Murt saved Jonesy's life when he was very badly wounded.

After their stint in the military Murt ended up in jail for assault and pretty much fell out of Jonesy's life. Now all of a sudden he's back.

Jonesy is wondering how the hell Murt ties into the whole deal. Murt is also being chased by two guys. They almost get him at the bar Jonesy and his dad own. Murt leaves a key with Jonesy. Its a safety deposit box key and once Jonesy checks it out it adds more questions than answers.

Of course Jonesy has Sandy Small on his team. In the middle of the murder investigation Sandy and Jonesy decide they need to investigate the mutual attraction they have for each other. They both find the loves of they're lives.

This is just one great read. Virgil Jones is one hell of a detective and he needs every bit of his ability to solve this one. He almost loses his life in his pursuit of the truth.

Just one great read and well worth those five stars.

Good characters, convoluted plot... Nice! One too many coincidences for me but it still works. I like the dialogue, too. The plot was a.bit too manufactured but he makes it work.

A Kindle Unlimited series recommendation, I was hooked from the beginning and did a marathon read of the 1st ten Virgil Jones’ mystery thriller novels in a few weeks; finished one day prior to Book 11 premiere. Needless to say, I downloaded Book 11 the next day and read the entire book in one seating. Virgil Jones has become one of my favorite mystery suspense series for the following reasons:

1. Very well written; Recommended to a friend whose first comment was that the series is well written and I wholeheartedly agree;
2. Excellent character development throughout the series: By Book 3, I was thoroughly invested in the characters. Just enough information about reappearing characters in subsequent books to jog my memory of the characters’ relevance in their next series appearance. Short recaps of previous events from the series were helpful, because I’m not good at quick recall of names and circumstances and I especially appreciated the descriptive brevity;
3. Witty and Humorous: Many LOL moments;
4. Suspenseful: Just when I thought there could be no more surprises, yet another one was awaiting around the corner;
5. I rarely skimmed over descriptive paragraphs because the writing didn’t dwell on every aspect of the scenery or circumstance;
6. No overblown or inappropriate sexual scenes. Personally, I don’t read mystery novels for the sex, other genres cover that, if interested;
7. Reading this series, for me, was equivalent to watching a well written performance of a TV crime drama that captures the intricacies of crime investigations, as well as the adverse effects such events have on the communities and lives and families of the detectives and investigators charged with solving these crimes;
8. Book 10 must have been one of my favorites in the series because I jotted myself a note that read, “Oh, H.E. Double Tooth Picks, To The No!”
9. Definitely a series you would want to read from the beginning. I’m looking forward to the next Virgil Jones’ installment and plan to include the series in an upcoming virtual Book Club I am beginning in May 2021.

The author is a word genius. With out going into detail, some of his chapter beginnings compare to philosophical poetry. In the story, the author provides an impossible puzzle that he solves for you at the end. This can be frustrating for reader sleuths who try to solve the mystery case. It’s impossible to do so. The reader would never know all the facts. I do have two irritants though. It seemed like the protagonist had had intimate relations with most of the female characters. This caused my eyes to roll. Why? Is that supposed to endear the reader to the good guy? Lastly this story didn’t have all the ends tied off. Is this to continue the story in the next book? To me, the story of the book introduced at the beginning was not resolved. So, bottom line, the author is wordsmith genius but needs to be about to write a complete story.

I originally was interested in this book because of the location in which it takes place. After just a few chapters I was hooked on the series. The characters are well done, the scenes spectacularly written, sometimes leading you one way when the answer lies the other way. As of this review, there are 18 books in the series and I have purchased every one...even though I'm just starting #9. THAT'S how good this series is. I love that I know or can visualize some of the places in each book because I'm from Indianapolis but even without that, I'd still have bought an 18 book series like this.
