Immortals of Meluha (The Shiva Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 18,831 ratings

1900 BC. In what modern Indians mistakenly call the Indus Valley Civilisation.

The inhabitants of that period called it the land of Meluha – a near perfect empire created many centuries earlier by Lord Ram, one of the greatest monarchs that ever lived.

This once proud empire and its Suryavanshi rulers face severe perils as its primary river, the revered Saraswati, is slowly drying to extinction. They also face devastating terrorist attacks from the east, the land of the Chandravanshis. To make matters worse, the Chandravanshis appear to have allied with the Nagas, an ostracised and sinister race of deformed humans with astonishing martial skills.

The only hope for the Suryavanshis is an ancient legend: ‘When evil reaches epic proportions, when all seems lost, when it appears that your enemies have triumphed, a hero will emerge.’

Is the rough-hewn Tibetan immigrant Shiva, really that hero?

And does he want to be that hero at all?

Drawn suddenly to his destiny, by duty as well as by love, will Shiva lead the Suryavanshi vengeance and destroy evil?

This is the first book in a trilogy on Shiva, the simple man whose karma re-cast him as our Mahadev, the God of Gods.

"Shiva rocks!"―Times of India

"Amish draws from India's rich culture to fictionalize the life of Shiva, the Great God Mahadev, of Hindu theology . . . [A] dense but readily understandable immersion in Hindu culture . . . The fascinating start of the Shiva trilogy that keeps you going until you "unfortunately" reach the end and you wonder why you did not get # 2 book! Not only a very addictive thriller, but so well done with Indian philosophy, geography etc... and a story line that plays a movie in your mind.
The writing style is very flowery and very Indian and flavorful even though sometimes you read a discrepancy between the old times when it takes place and the current language that we hear nowadays.
But you take to it. The heroes become YOUR heroes and friends, you understand the choices they are confronted with and you have no other way but think about your own life and own choices in your own world and time.
This is very well done. And I would actually recommend it to all those who study yoga, Indian civilization and culture because this comes out of this culture. Even those who are tickled by a natural curiosity about India may want to delve into this trilogy.
Enjoy with all your heart!

Being a devotee of Lord Shiva I was delighted beyond imagination after discovering this amazing book, the first in the Shiva Trilogy, and was immensely rewarded by the well-crafted story blending mythology and fiction. Just two words came to my mind after reading it - Shiva rocks..!!! Shiva is wonderfully depicted as a fearless leader, a passionate lover, a ferocious warrior, a graceful dancer and a faithful friend.

Shiva, along with his tribe, travels from Mount Kailash to India to find a better life for himself and his people. Little does he know that his destiny awaits him in the city of Meluha. The absolute faith of the Meluhans in the legend of the Neelkanth, destroyer of evil, along with an agonizing childhood event motivates Shiva and turns him from an ordinary tribal leader to their Mahadev. The foreigner accepts his destiny and the war between good and evil begins.

This book took me by surprise and it was sheer joy to read it. It has a great story along with strong characters. Amish gradually and skilfully develops the various facets of Shiva's character which allows the reader to marvel at him and believe in the legend of the Neelkanth accepting Shiva as the Mahadev. The language is unexpectedly unconventional and may not be acceptable to all. I think it was deliberate to attract young adult readers.

However, lack of proofreading was a let-down. There were typo errors for some words throughout the ebook version. I am not aware about the printed one. But the story makes up for that. Hence I am looking forward to read the next two books and strongly recommend this trilogy to one and all.

Turned out to be a good read, but thankfully I did not have too many expectations to begin with.

I had heard a lot of positive reviews of this trilogy, and decided to pick it up when I found it in the Kindle ebook format. The author has done a pretty good job of "humanizing" Shiva, and seems to have set a decent stage for the next book, where I suspect the real action will begin (I haven't read that book yet).

PROBABLY A SPOILER:
The author also has an interesting take on the societies of the Suryavanshis and Chandravanshis. IMO, both societies do not fulfill the principles of a true Utopian "Ram Rajya", i.e. the Suryavanshi society is almost Dystopian, while the Chandravanshi society is almost anarchaic / chaotic. I use the word "almost" because in spite of the flaws in these societies, citizens of both appear to be highly contented, which is uncharacteristic of true Dystopian and Anarchaic societies. The author has presented the duality of these two societies in a fairly simplistic and easy-to-understand manner, which is quite commendable.

The book is fairly easy to read, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in an alternative take on Indian mythology. It might help readers knowing a bit about traditional Indian mythology in advance, to truly appreciate how the author deviates from it.

NEGATIVE:
There are quite a few spelling errors in the book - not sure if that's there in the original print publication, or if it is true for the Kindle format. If not for this, I would've given it 4 stars.

Overall: I am looking forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

This book was very engrossing and very interesting.. the idea of this fictionalized version was very catchy and i couldn't put it down until i finished it.

The one negative that was about the Kindle version of the book was the spelling a lot of words which had "tl" e.g. battle, little would become "batde" or "Litde".. there were some others as well, which i cannot remember.. i wish that these could be corrected and an updated version of the e-book is delivered.

coming back to the book, i personally loved the author's excellent description of the action scenes or the romantic moments between Shiva & Sati. also the dialogs between the main characters is very earthy and at times it was little difficult to imagine Shiva talking / joking in that language.

But overall, i thought it was a very interesting book to read and i immediately purchased the sequel which was also finished in one-shot.

Can't wait for the 3rd and final version of the trilogy.

"The Immortals of Meluha" by Amish takes readers on a mesmerizing journey back to 1900 BC, exploring the land of Meluha during the Indus Valley Civilization. Amish's imaginative reimagining of history and mythology is truly inspiring. The concept of a once-great empire facing peril and the emergence of a hero amidst chaos captivated my imagination from the very beginning.

The story's relatability lies in the portrayal of the protagonist, Shiva. A rough-hewn Tibetan immigrant, Shiva's internal struggle between destiny, duty, and love resonates with the modern reader. This relatability adds depth to the character and allows readers to connect with his journey on a personal level.

Amish's writing style is engaging and seamlessly blends historical and mythological elements. The intricate setup of the world and the political turmoil of Meluha paint a vivid picture of the era. The fusion of historical details with mythical elements creates a unique reading experience that keeps you hooked.

"The Immortals of Meluha" is an intriguing mix of history, mythology, and adventure. It presents a fresh perspective on ancient legends and questions the essence of heroism. The book's ability to transport readers to a bygone era, coupled with its relatable characters and engaging narrative, make it a remarkable read. Personally, I expected a blend of mythology and history, and the book exceeded my expectations by adding an element of suspense and intrigue. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a unique spin on mythology and history, intertwined with a captivating tale of heroism and destiny.
