The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure: A Comprehensive Guide to the Theory and Practical Use of the Point and Figure Charting Method 2nd Edition, Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 133 ratings

Point and Figure charts are one of the great secrets of the Technical Analysis world. Highly sophisticated and with a thoroughbred pedigree, they can, however, be overlooked by traders today. Jeremy du Plessis - one of the foremost Point and Figure experts in the world - returns with a fully updated second edition of this definitive guide in an effort to redress this imbalance.
This second edition, with an extensive revision to the text and introduction of brand new techniques, demystifies the world of Point and Figure charting. It includes a detailed explanation of the history and development of the technique from its invention to the modern day, and covers the makeup of the chart patterns, why they are created, and how to interpret them.
Throughout, readers are encouraged to understand Point and Figure charts from first principles, rather than just remember the names of a series of patterns. It is the first major work for 50 years to discuss in depth the original 1-box reversal method of Point and Figure charting and contrast it with the more popular 3-box reversal method. Further, the explanation of how to use Point and Figure charts to project targets and calculate risk-reward ratios is the most comprehensive ever seen.
Also featured in the second edition are:
- A step-by-step analysis of the FTSE 100 Index using the 3-box method, as well as the NASDAQ Composite Index, using the 1-box method
- A detailed discussion of optimising techniques
- An in-depth chapter on Analysing Point and Figure charts, extensively rewritten from the first edition
- A new explanation of how Point and Figure parameters are chosen and the implications of choosing them
- Two new Point and Figure construction methods never seen before
- Point and Figure's contribution to market breadth, with a look at bullish percent and two brand new indicators
- Full discussion of Point and Figure gaps and how they provide valuable information about the chart
- Lesser known, more advanced techniques such as the use of moving averages, parabolic SAR and Bollinger Bands on Point and Figure charts
- Price and volume activity histograms and how they provide information about support and resistance
All this is illustrated with numerous colour charts and observations from years of trading experience.
According to du Plessis, Point and Figure charts are the 'voice of the market'. This book helps you listen to, and understand, that voice.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A great book which I highly recommend if you wish to really grasp the intricacies of point and figure charting. ―Karl Snyder, CMT

Without question, one of the great technical analysis books currently available―
The Technical Analyst

Rarely does a book live up to its claim of being the 'definitive' guide to something. Jeremy du Plessis' new book lives up to that claim and more. It's almost impossible to imagine a more definitive treatment of point and figure charting. The author pays homage to its early development and the pioneers who first wrote about it. He gives extensive coverage to the original 1-point reversal method before moving on to the more modern methods. The subject is examined from every conceivable angle. I'm not aware of anyone who has even attempted to combine p&f charting with so many modern technical indicators. I expect that du Plessis' book will not only become the definitive book on point and figure, but will also become a classic in the field of technical analysis.
―John Murphy CMT, Author of Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets

A superbly comprehensive book on this powerful technique from one of the world's leading experts on the subject. A must read for all serious technicians and investors.
―Adam Sorab, Chairman UK Society of Technical Analysts

If you had to go to a desert island and were only allowed to take one investment tool with you, then it should be the Point and Figure chart. If you were also allowed to take only one book, other than the Bible and the works of Shakespeare, then make it this Definitive Guide by Jeremy du Plessis. The whole subject is covered from its early historical beginnings as a way of noting the noise of the ticker tape in the days of Charles Dow, then called the Book method, through its evolution to become the 'Voice of the market'. How to construct and use the charts and their unequivocally clear buy and sell signals, revelation of trend, reversal, support and resistance levels are all revealed and well illustrated. The subject is explained as an evidence gathering procedure, that leads to a successful trading method, with accurate entry, stop loss, and targets. It is also brought right up to date with some new thinking involving indicators such as OBV, Bollinger bands, and parabolic stop and reverse signals. You will have such a great time working through it on your desert island that you might not want to come home.
―Robin Griffiths FSTA, Head of Asset Allocation, Rathbone Investment Management

Even though point and figure charting is 120 years old, Mr. du Plessis has brought a truly fresh and authoritative approach to a subject that is central to technical analysis. Bravo!
―Bruce M. Kamich, CMT, Adjunct Professor of Finance at Baruch College, Past President of the Market Technicians Association

Not only does Mr. du Plessis plumb the history and elucidate the present state of point and figure analysis, he looks at a craft many regard as passe and sees a vibrant future. This eye-opener is a welcome addition to the literature of technical analysis.
―John Bollinger, CFA, CMT, President, Bollinger Capital Management

About the Author

Jeremy trained as an automotive engineer, then an economist, but gave them both up to become a Technical Analyst. In 1983 he founded Indexia Research and pioneered the development of PC based technical analysis software with the Indexia range of technical analysis systems. During the 1980s he developed a number of technical tools and indicators under the banner of Indexia, which are still used in software to this day. He is an expert on Point and Figure charts, and the Indexia software was the first PC-based system to draw them correctly and clearly in the early 1980s. He lectures the Point and Figure module for the Society of Technical Analysts and sets the Point and Figure syllabus for the International Federation of Technical Analysts. He has taught Technical Analysis, and in particular Point and Figure, to thousands of professional traders and investors over the last 20 years. In 2001, after running Indexia Research for nearly 20 years, he agreed to merge the company with Updata plc, where he is now Head of Technical Analysis and the designer of the Updata Technical Analyst software. He is a Fellow of the Society of Technical Analysts (FSTA) in the UK, and a member of the American Market Technicians Association (MTA). He is a holder of the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation awarded by the MTA.

The title says it all. There are plenty of charts and references to them. This is a well written book, somewhat dense of course, since it is rather technical. Point and figure charts offer a different view of price action and can be set up in many different configurations. Do not expect to become a master of P&F charting overnight. This book gives more than enough information to become proficient in reading these types of charts, but if you are fairly new to P&F charting, it will take a while to put all the pieces together. I find P&F charts easier to read because you can scale out much of the noise and there only a handful of formations that you need to become familiar with. When you include trendlines and counting to set up price targets, you have the mixture for some easier to read charts. Support and resistance levels stand out more clearly and there is no time scale or volume to confuse things. I am glad I purchased this book because it is easy to comprehend and the explanations of P&F methods are understandable. I haven't found any other resources for P&F charting that come close to this one. P&F charting is really a long lost art and that is what appeals to me because so few investors know how they work of even try to use them.

I bought this book based on the positive reviews, and my own interest to finally understand P&F charts. I can say that the book lived up to its high rating. Here are the key points that I personally admired:

    1. The author's passion for the subject of P&F charts permeates the entire book. He very thoughtfully takes you on a mental journey of the subject, from historical, to present, and objectively teaches you how to become a P&F trader.

    2. The editor has performed one of the most thorough spelling and grammar checks I've ever seen. I'm sure this was quite a feat, with a book of over 500 pages.

    3. After reading this book, I feel the equivalent of taking a graduate level college class - at an upscale private college that is!

It's difficult for me to be critical in any way, but I would like to make a few comments. First, even though this is a great book, I'm not sure everyone is suited for P&F trading. However, if you were to dedicate yourself to the discipline, this book could take you there. Secondly, not all trading platforms are designed correctly for "1x1 boxes", explored at length by the author. Fortunately I had access to TradeStation that has the option to use them correctly. Finally, there are some nifty utilities related to box counts, the author refers to. You can certainly do this manually with chart drawing tools, but if you subscribe to Updata (of which the author is a co-owner), you can get these utilities as part of that platform. The author never plugged his own organization, and I applaud him for that. However, it's quite evident that if you want to get serious about trading P&F, you might want to consider their platform.

From someone that consistently lost in the market, once you start using P & F it opens up a method of analysis that time based indicators can't reveal. I started on this 3 weeks ago and am profitable ever since. I use the P&F method for bias and Heiken-Ashi candles short term (not covered). The author uses so many examples and charts that you get a pretty clear picture of his intent. The book is heavy and the paper is top quality. Since there is as much art as science (selecting proper box size) you should reread this many times for the finer details, it us well worth it. He stresses this more than once. He gives a thorough history of P & F but that was less interesting. My ONLY dislike is that he spent too much time on 1 box reversals which my charting service doesn't chart accurately.
I just can't say enough about the method and the author. BUY IT then study it

After becoming proficient in candle charting, I was a bit hesitant to learn a whole new form of charting. However, I felt that I might as well try to add another tool in the tool box, which is why I bought this book.

After reading it, I realized that I did not get another tool in the tool box, but I got a whole new box! This book, weighing in it at 1.5kg, and covering 515 pages, lives up to its title of being definitive. For the price, you get a plethora of material, as well as many full colour charts.

Jeremey Du Plessis, the author, starts off by introducing the history of point and figure charting. He goes through this form of charting's evolution, and how its name came about. I thought this section was fascinating, and helped build a solid foundation before he moved on.

From there, the author goes on to describe how the charts are constructed, and he goes through numerous examples, so that it's impossible not to understand once he is finally done. Mr. Du Plessis differentiates between the various forms on point and figure charts, and explains the benefits and draw backs of each.

The section I found most interesting was the one on the interpretation of buy and and sell signals. This is the part of the book that can be used to make money in the stock market. After reading this section, I came to the realization that this form of charting can show you things that will not be evident in candle charting.

Today, six years after purchasing the book, I no longer use point and figure charts. Although I still believe this charting technique is effective, I simply developed a trend following system with candle charts that better suits me. However, the take away lesson that has stuck me throughout the years was the author's systematic, mechanical, disciplined approach to trading which I still use to this day.

Finally, there were some downsides to this book. Some of the sections were just too long, and I did not believe in some of the concepts such as using counts to determine price targets. I just don't see the rationale behind this concept. Besides that, this book is very well written and I would recommend it.

Really complete, extremely in depth analysis of this form of technical analysis. Well-written, and lots of illustrations. It is expensive, but if you are interested in P&F charting, you can't go wrong with this one.

It's a different world for a person used to just looking at candle charts. I recommend it for people who are curious to know some different criteria for buy and sell signals, and ways to look at charts without time being on the X axis. It definitely kept my attention and opened my eyes to a different way a trader can look at price movement.
