4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 340 ratings

Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp Murry was a prominent modernist writer of short fiction who was born and brought up in colonial New Zealand and wrote under the pen name of Katherine Mansfield. Mansfield left for Great Britain in 1908 where she encountered Modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf with whom she became close friends. Her stories often focus on moments of disruption and frequently open rather abruptly.

Katherine Mansfield died relatively young, and as a native New Zealander has probably been undervalued as well as under recognized. This collection will, I hope, begin to amend that oversight. It did that for me, and I hope will introduce many others to this fine writer of short fiction.

One day, on a whim, I bought a book of Katherine Mansfield's stories at a bookstore. It wasn't cheap and I soon found out that it didn't even include all of her stories. So I searched amazon.com and found this wonderful edition that followed her throughout her career and gave a more comprhensive view of her work--and at a much more affordable price. I ordered it, it arrived promptly, and there are now several creases in its spine from late nights of reading "Bliss," "A Garden Pary," and "Miss Brill" along with many of Mansfield's lesser-known, but in no way inferior, stories. It is always an easy, and stress-free experience ordering from Amazon.com and I am so thankful that I found this book. I know it will give me enjoyment for years to come.

Katherine Mansfield died at 34 after producing a modest body of work that helped launch the modern short story. Her stories explored the interiors of her characters in a way that wasn't common at the time, and that bear some resemblance to Virginia's Wolfe's work. Here characters seem quaint by today's standards but she unfailingly renders them as thoughtful, introspective, complicated and unpredictable. And this makes them relatable even to a modern audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive collection of brilliant stories

I hadn't read anything from this writer before, but enough about her to decide to buy the collected stories. Very glad I did, they're a brilliant read. This book gives you a solid introduction as well. Another great Penguin Classic.

Me gusta porque es una recopilación completa de la obra de Katherine Mansfield, pero es de difícil lectura dado que la letra es muy pequeña.
