Murder in Newport (Liz Adams Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 112 ratings

Liz and Garret Adams’ vacation to Newport, Rhode Island aboard their sailboat, Sloopy, resulted in a heart wrenching test of their love and marriage when Garret saw the image of his first love, Rebecca, standing on the aft deck of the luxury yacht, Party Girl, at Bannister’s Wharf. Torn by his feelings for his wife and Rebecca, who had disappeared without a trace almost thirty years before, Garret rode an emotional roller coaster into the hands of the police as the primary suspect of a gruesome murder in historical Blood Alley.
Although the evidence pointed to Garret and she was convinced that their marriage was over, Liz refused to give up on the man who had been her husband, her lover, but most of all, her friend. Forgetting her own pain, she pried into Garret’s relationship with Rebecca, only to find herself lost in a maze of deceit and misplaced loyalties. Through her persistence, Liz discovered the truth that shackled the killer and set the innocent free.

I read the first book in the series, Murder in Mystic, and just HAD to read Murder in Newport next. I loved Murder in Newport just as much as I loved Murder in Mystic. The author is so talented that you become immersed in the story and find it hard to put it down. I was happy to see that Liz and Garret are again the main characters. I really enjoyed them in the first book and was excited that they were once again participants in another murder mystery! This is a wonderful read for those that want to escape for a little bit and enjoy a great murder mystery.

I ordered this because I live in New England, CT., not far from Newport. I was hoping for a Barbara Delinsky type of novel but was disappointed, It was mildly entertaining, but predictable. I prefer to be genuinely surprised at the end. Not much to say on this one!

The appearance of Garret's old flame disrupts what started out as a pleasant sailing holiday. Liz has always felt "second" to Rebecca, Garret's first love while Garret still has vivid memories of his time with Rebecca. And now, Rebecca, her husband and daughter are on the yacht on the other side of the wharf unbeknownst to Garret and Liz. Garret's work for Rebecca's rich and powerful husband is short lived. No sooner has Garret had a public argument with the man, and the man is found dead. As Liz and Garret try to figure out who is trying to set him up, they discover more secrets - more fuel for the emotional rollercoasters they both are experiencing.

A well-written tale, with some historical references woven throughout. This is the second in the Liz Adams Mysteries - MURDER IN MYSTIC being the first. With some Connecticut roots myself, I will be adding that one to my TBR pile for sure. Of note, both of these are available in kindle, paper, AND audio.

There's a lot to like in this book. I'm not familiar with the area or with boats, but the details and descriptions were convincing and appeared well researched. The problem lies in the way characters occasionally do a 360 degree turnaround in their emotions within seconds without any apparent cause, particularly Liz - jealous/not jealous. And Garret is pretty much the same - thinks he still loves the ex/doesn't think he still loves the ex. It's a bit all over the place.

Consistently inconsistent. That is what this book is. Let me count the ways:

    1. Liz, the wife of Garrett, has been married to her husband for 28 years. Never had children. On a whim, the couple travels to Newport, RI where they run into a former love (Rebecca) of Garrett. In an unexplainable moment of going overboard, Liz tells her husband she knows he needs to leave her to be with his first love. Really? After 28 years of marriage, a 2 minute conversation with a former love will break up the marriage? At times, Liz is self-assured. Other times, she is curled in a ball in the fetal position. At times, she is friendly and caring for Rebecca. Then she snaps and is accusing Rebecca of manipulating her husband.

    2. Garrett is a loving man who all of a sudden jumps on top of Rebecca's husband and threatens to kill him over a woman he hasn't seen in 28 years. He is constantly telling Liz how much he loves her, and then he calls her a psychic bitch (not psychotic, but psychic). At times he is patient, and then he is snapping at people.

    3. Rebecca is portrayed as a horrid, miserable, drunk socialite. Sometimes she is slurring her words, sometimes she is eloquent. Sometimes she is very loving to her daughter, Jessica, and then she flips and is very condescending.

    4. Jessica is a spoiled 28 year old - going on 12 year old girl who has been sheltered her entire life. So much so, at age 28 she receives her first kiss. Sometimes she can think on her own, other times she waits to be told what to do. I can't say more about the inconsistencies with this character because it will spoil some of the plot (not that it really matters, but in case someone does want to read this book...)

    5. Some paragraphs are indented correctly, others are double and triple indented.

    6. The plot is all over the place. There are gaping holes. There are scenes that add nothing to the plot and others that are crucial to the plot that are not fleshed out enough.

Then there are the cliches. And overly used stereotypes.

At about 30% through, I realized there hadn't been a murder yet. Hmmmm. It's in the title! Then about 50%, I was cursing myself for still reading this. That is when the book got comically funny for me. Like watching the 1991 movie "Soapdish" that is a parody of soap operas. This is how I got through the rest of the book - by laughing at how ridiculous it all is. Not very nice to the author and her hard work, but this really is not a good book.

What would make this better? Break it all down - map out each character, map out the plot, keep track of who said what and did what and how that fits into their character. Remove all of the stereotypes (goofy stupid police officers - who are sometimes portrayed as smart). Create real drama, not drama portrayed every day on television. Add some chapters that bring us back 28 years so we actually care about Garrett and Rebecca. Tell us more about Garrett and Liz' life so we care about them. Either change Jessica drastically so she actually seems 28, or change all of the dates so she can be 18. That would fit better with how she behaves. Take out that awkward and cheesy "sex" scene between Jessica and the captain because that was over the top. OR have them already in a secret relationship so that it makes more sense.

The "who done it" part was ok for me - I knew who did it because the author gave it away too many times. The reasoning was weak (only because it wasn't explained that Rebecca's husband was a the way he is - trying not to spoil here). But at least that part was plausible.

I'm familiar with Newport, and really this could have taken place anywhere. Lake Michigan. Oregon. The author needs to add more to get the reader attached to Newport and why it's so special for this story.

I do not recommend this book, even if it is free.
