From the Author: Surprising Findings from the Science of Gratitude
The science of gratitude has revealed a number of surprising and counterintuitive findings. Among these:
Thanking is Thinking
Students who practice gratitude increase their grade point average.
Less is More
Occasional gratitude journaling boosts well-being more than does the regular practice of counting blessings.
Remember the Bad
Remembering one’s sorrows, failures, and other painful experiences is more beneficial to happiness than recalling only successes.
Seize the Day
Becoming aware that a very pleasant experience is about to end enhances feelings of gratitude for it.
The George Bailey Effect
Thinking about the absence of something positive in your life produces more gratitude and happiness than imagining its presence.
The Eccentric Privilege of Life
Reflecting about one’s own death produces an increase in gratitude in comparison to two control conditions.
Pass the Tissues
Watching a tear-jerker increases gratitude more than does watching a comedy film.
Gratitude Deficit Disorder
Although women are more grateful than men, people who benefit most from gratitude journaling are those men who are initially less grateful before they begin to journal.

"Gratitude Works! is a must read! Robert Emmons, the world's leading gratitude researcher, offers a science-based prescription for transforming our lives personally and professionally through the power of gratitude. Pollay, author of The Law of the Garbage Truck: How to Stop People from Dumping on You
"Everyone on this planet has one common wish: to be happy. When I allowed gratitude to enter my everyday life, I found my happiness and my performance skyrocketed. I always enjoy listening to Dr. Emmons talk about this amazing topic. Read this book!"―Ed Tseng, author of Game. Set. Life. - Peak Performance for Sports and Life
From the Inside Flap
"Gratitude is important not only because it helps us feel good, but also because it inspires us to do good. Gratitude heals, energizes, and transforms lives...
Gratitude takes us outside our scope so we see ourselves as part of a larger, intricate network of sustaining relationships, relationships that are mutually reciprocal."
From the Preface
From Robert Emmons, the best-selling author of THANKS!, comes a vital resource that shows us how to tap into the power and grace of gratitude. Emmons draws on a wide array of research, including his own, to show that the practice of gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects on and in our lives. It can lower blood pressure, improve immune function, promote happiness and well-being, and spur acts of helpfulness, generosity, and cooperation.
The organic metaphor of "growing gratitude" is a powerful image for conveying basic truths of how we reap the benefits of a more gratitude-filled life. We do not acquire gratitude; we cultivate it through daily practices that make it a deeply ingrained disposition. This accessible book provides a twenty-one-day, step-by-step guide for cultivating gratitude practicesthe concrete things you can do to grow your mind and direct your actions toward a more grateful worldview. Through practice, giving thanks grows from the ground of one's being. Grateful feelings, once buried, can surface if we take the time to notice and reflect.
A French proverb states that gratitude is the memory of the heartit is the way that the heart remembers. If you want to be a grateful person then you must remember to remember. Gratitude Works! will show you how.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2014I really love this book! I've tried gratitude journaling before with no success. I've never understood why it worked for others and not me. This book explains how to do it, in a way that is understandable and easy to follow.
The main part of the book looks at gratitude from different perspectives - sociological, psychological, etc. There are also reports of a number of trials run over time to determine how people feel after specific active practices of gratitude journaling compared to people who do other types of journaling. The people who actively practice gratitude all reported feeling happier by the end of the trials, so I decided to give it a go.
The program consists of writing from 7 different perspective of gratitude, one per day for 7 days then cycling through the 7 perspectives again, then once more. I'm about half way through the program and I'm already feeling happier overall. I can identify the perspectives that work best for me, but I can see the value of all 7 of the perspectives.
Journaling about what I am grateful for 10-15 minutes a day is definitely worth the time, since I feel so much better while doing it!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2015I am grateful that I found this book. It change my way of viewing life. If you do all exercises it is amazing how it can change your heart. I am feeling more alive and thankful than ever. I see a blessing in each day! You just have to take whatever serves you in it and leave the stuff you don't agree with. But it may me take a look at my life and see were I was failing and to recognize I was been ungrateful. I wanted for my whole family to read it is so sad they don't have a Spanish version of it. I first bought "Living life as a Thank you" It was a good book but to repetitive and then I bought "Daily gratitude 365 days of reflection" that has no comparison, because is a quote book. By far this is the best book of gratitude I have read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2016I bit too scientifically written to my taste but the information is GREAT. Have purchased several books on gratitude and gratitude journaling. This is by far the best one. This book specifically tells you what journaling practices have proven to work the best and why.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013I ran into Robert Emmons on NPR several years ago. I like what I heard and got his book "Thanks". It gave me scientific studies to support what I had suspected about gratitude. He had great stories and practical ways of implementing gratitude. I am a family physician and I talk to my patients about gratitude and how it can improve their lives. The medical students that train with me are required to read it and report on it to me. "Gratitude Works: . . . ." is a continuation with more studies, more stories and more insights. The whole last chapter is about implementing gratitude in your life. These two books are so life-enhancing. You are cheating yourself if you don't make gratitude part of who you are.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2023A great reminder of how one should live and move through the world. It’s an attitude that can change your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2013I've been struggling with implementing positive psychology for a while. This book came at the perfect time in my life...the scientific evidence mixed with Mr Emmons insight creates a perfect mix of inspiration and application. I'm on Day 39 right now and I'm experiencing the shift in how I see events, people, experiences, etc. I can't recommend this gem enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017Great book! Loved the exercises! Realized how much gratitude impacts our lives! Will definitely recommend to friends to read more on this topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2015There is statement made early on thus book that really impacted me. Robert states that gratitude is not just a skill we develop but a character trait. It shouldn't be something we become good at on the surface, bringing us a polished look for others to see. It is something that should be deeply embedded within us. Something that stirs our soul and causes deep heart felt and powerful feelings of gratitude. I am so grateful for the time and energy that has been put into this book. It has really given me some great resources and ideas to on how to increase my understanding of gratitude and how to more fully integrate it into my life. What a wonderful blessing it is to know more about the science and benefits of gratitude. Thank you Robert!

5.0 out of 5 stars C'est bien de remercier
Quand on comprend l'attitude de l'autre on peut remercier. Soit parce qu'on est fixé soit qu'on reçoit quelque chose qu'on se rend compte que ce n'est pas garanti du tout que les autres vont nous le donner.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book helps you excavate the joys you have buried inside you
Gratitude Works! and my goodness does it work. This book is a must read for all. Not only does Prof. Emmons weave a great story but also gives us the ABCs of Gratitude, but the most important part is what you as the reader put into it. I did the 21-day journaling, each and every day, and I could see my spirit uplifting, recognising what richness there is in my life that remains under the surface. With gratitude journaling, we excavate to discover the joys we have buried inside us, unseen and unaware. In the words of the poet Rumi, "There is a milk fountain inside you, don't walk around with an empty bucket...there is a basket of fresh bread on your head, and yet you go door to door asking for crumbs." Don't look for the joy outside of yourself. Do this 21-day program, and you will find the source of your joy inside yourself. With Gratitude.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-researched with plenty of practical exercises
A very good book that is well-researched and has plenty of concrete strategies to apply immediately. I rarely purchase a book, but to me this one was worth having to work through the exercises and reference in the future.
