Trebuchets in the Garden (Accidental Heretics Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

How do you rise up at the dawn of the Inquisition?
Pursued across medieval Languedoc by an unknown adversary, three unlikely companions join forces. Tomas the mercenary persists in his quest for revenge, but slashes deep wounds in his own soul. Jean-Luc, an exiled and heartbroken knight, searches for a man whose secrets might redeem him. Isabella of Valeros is falsely condemned for heresy, but to find her son, she must seek answers among the goodwomen, the so-called heretics beset by this new crusade.

Separated, exposed, and hunted, Tomas, Isabella, and Jean-Luc must find their relentless enemy before he destroys them—and their families. Meanwhile, Simon de Montfort’s army terrorizes southern Europe, flushing heretics from the hills, shouting over the voices of the troubadours.

Trebuchets in the Garden, Book 2 in the Accidental Heretics series, continues the adventure from Book 1, Bone-mend and Salt, where Tomas, Isabella, and Jean-Luc are entrapped in the Languedoc crusade, while Simon de Montfort prepares to ignite the next heretics’ pyre in the summer of 1210. This book includes maps and a glossary of Occitan and historical terms.

About the Author

More than once, E.A. Stewart slept under her desk at a major software company after staying up until 4 a.m. reading a book that transported its reader to another world. It might have been Baker's Company stories or Francis Lymond at large in the world or magical swordsmen under a crescent moon. When she was writing engineering white papers (no more than two clauses per sentence, with no adverbs or adjectives), she remembered that she knew more things. About history and birds and dreams. About calligraphy and the scents of mountain air and sea air. Now she writes adventure stories for curious readers seeking a portal to another world. Annie Stewart lives and writes in Seattle, Washington.

I very much like this period and place. The author sheds a lot more light on difficult history concerning the heresy that flourished there. I also loved the people. Characters well developed.

I'm a big fan of historical fiction, and this book provides all the elements I look for: a complex and engaging plot, writing that vividly - and faithfully - evokes a period and place, and, most importantly, well-written characters that I can care about.

Stewart's chosen setting - the thirteenth-century Albigensian Crusade - is a tragic episode of political greed, religious intolerance, and brutal warfare. Stewart deftly moves the novel's characters within this historical landscape and demonstrates a deep knowledge of the period that is consistently applied in service of the plot. The interaction between fictional characters and actual historical figures is skillfully managed, which is one of the joys of historical fiction if done well. The pace of the writing is brisk and absorbing, the various story arcs intriguing, and each of the characters memorable and oh so human - for good or ill.

Above all, Trebuchets in the Garden represents a great adventure story, expertly told.

A ripping adventure yarn set in the South of France during the crusade against the Cathars. Interesting characters and can't put it down action

This is a great sequel to the first story Bone-mend and Salt. As the characters continued through their struggles Annie has created a believable continuing story. She has created a backdrop where I could imagine the dilemmas faced by those who lived in the 13th century. I couldn't put it down, hoping for resolution in many of their struggles. I highly recommend Trebuchets in the Garden and am ready for #3.

There are two hallmarks of a great book in my mind. One is something that happens when you are partway through the book and you suddenly get sad because you realize that if you keep reading it will be over. That happened to me around page 97 in this book. The other one is that the world of the book and the characters start appear in your night dreams. That happened too with this novel. For me both are signs of an immersive experience which is what I want from historical fiction, being totally transported to another place and time that feels real.
The only fault I could find with this book is that it felt that it wrapped up too fast (and that might be due to the fact that I never wanted it to end). Also I didn't always fully grasp what was going on because both the politics and the family dynamics were complicated, but I'm willing to blame that on how fast I was reading. I wanted to read more slowly to fully savor all of the sensory detail and hang out with the engaging characters but the story had an inexorable momentum that kept me moving forward.
