REFLECTIONS OF PERU (The Heritage of Peru Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

This collection of essays and notes on Peru covers a series of subjects ranging from the Moche culture of the north of the country, passing through the Inca empire of Tahuantinsuyo and continuing to the Spanish conquest and the vice-regal period. The mysterious ceque system of the Incas continues to attract the attention of archaeologists and historians. The role of women in pre-Hispanic Peru and after the conquest has sometimes been overlooked, yet here it can be seen as being of great importance. Printing in Peru goes back to the 16th century, with texts in Spanish, Quechua and Aymara, some of them authentic literary treasures. The role of the 40 successive Viceroys was key to the maintenance of Spanish dominion over three centuries, and quinine figures among the many useful products transmitted during those years from the Andes to Europe. The book ends with a Peruvian Vocabulary and short Bibliography on Peru.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

'Reflections of Peru' is intended for the armchair traveller who may feel attracted by the mysterious Andes and their inhabitants from past cultures of which little is known due to the lack of written records in pre-conquest times. It is also meant to be a good companion providing cultural background to those who actually visit Peru, something greatly to be recommended as it offers an opportunity to meet the people, see their striking landscapes for yourself, and taste their food which is becoming ever more widely appreciated on an international level.

About the Author

Born in England and educated in Bristol and Oxford, Mervyn Samuel has lived for most of his adult life in Spanish-speaking lands. The years spent in Peru produced a lasting effect on him and led him to return whenever possible, building up friendships and reading the Spanish chronicles written in the 16th and 17th centuries, which offer information on the country the Europeans found on their arrival there, as well as the evolution of the following centuries. He has also travelled widely around the country, though there is plenty more to discover! Peru is an object of endless fascination for those who come into contact with it, and 'Reflections of Peru' aims to assist in the process of discovery.

Mr.Samuel has done a very good Job here. This book is really a "must" for everyone who is willing to come and visit Perú.
Here the person who first visits these country will have a lot of information, and will not need assístance in visiting such or such place, Mr Samuel also tell the reader who is such person when telling you about the conquistadores or the Inca principals, or land lords before the spaniards.
I sure recommend everybody who is planning to visit my country.
