Hard As You Can: A Hard Ink Novel Kindle Edition
Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he's shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister's sake, Crystal can't get too close. Until her job and Shane's mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.
Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn't want him to uncover. Too bad. He's exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can--and never let go.

--What’s Going On--
Shane McCallan and the Hard Ink guys continue to search for information on what really happened when they were ambushed in Afghanistan. They get some unexpected help from Confession's waitress Crystal Roberts.
--What are the Issues--
Shane is charming and sweet but underneath it all he lives with the guilt that as a teenager, his little sister disappeared, never to be found again, while he was babysitting her. Crystal is forced to work at the strip club Confessions in order to pay back the debt that her gang member father has to Jimmy Church. Not only is Crystal trapped in this work but she's trapped in an abusive relationship with the high ranking Churchmen Apostle Bruno. She is planning her escape but she needs more money to support herself and her young sister who suffers from epilepsy.
--What I Liked--
This was an amazing follow up to Hard as It Gets and I am absolutely loving this series! Laura Kaye is an artist when it comes to creating characters and then interlinking them through relationships and bonds. Crystal has had a really hard life but after it all she's still a survivor and she still has the fight and will to live free. We see right away that Crystal is strong and she has a plan to escape her misfortune. I liked that Crystal isn't just wasting away until Shane comes in like a white knight. Instead, she's hiding away money, she planning to get out, and she's secretly disobeying Bruno. She might be oppressed and beaten down by life, but she's not a passive participant in her troubles. I also admire her dedication to her younger sister and the fact that she's willing to literally put up with anything in order to keep her sister safe. Shane is also a wonderful character who's a great foil for Crystal because he's so charming and sweet. He has that perfect Southern gentleman persona that provides a comforting and safe place for Crystal to finally be herself. I loved watching the slow and gentle development of Crystal and Shane's relationship. Though they fall in love under unusual circumstances and Crystal comes to trust and be attracted to Shane quickly, I think that Kaye does a great job of setting up her strength of character to later show that Crystal can take what she wants. I also loved how she moved from being Crystal (the name Bruno wanted her to have) to being Sara (her real self).
I'm also loving the rest of the Hard Ink guys, especially Mars! This book really showed his personality and his goofy humor and I really can't wait to read his book. This one was also interesting because the guys delve a bit deeper into vigilantism, but Kaye does a really good job of justifying these actions and not making it seem like just a bunch of ex-military guys going off and doing whatever they want. They can't trust the cops and they know this for a fact, so they have to handle things on their own and they're doing their best to not cross too many lines. They're always aware that what they need to do, needs to have a good reason and that the they are doing the right thing even when they break laws. I greatly respect Laura Kaye for doing this, as sometimes I read romance novels and the heroes just run around killing people left and right. Yes they're bad guys but they don't ever seem to have any regard for what they're doing and how it can sometimes come across. Kaye handles this much better than I've seen in the past. There was also a lot of really great emotional moments between the guys, especially when Nick and Shane finally have a moment to address how things went down after they returned stateside. Watching them have a chance to finally mend some fences was beautiful. Another thing that Kaye does so well is creating bonds and expressing the emotions of her male characters; often romance author's want their male characters to express their feelings and share their past and sometimes it comes across as feminine or like a bunch of women gossiping. Some of that goes back to stereotypes of how men are supposed to act and talk, especially in such alpha jobs like the military. But there is a way to write male characters emotionally bonding and still have it come across as very genuine and natural and real. I greatly look forward to the rest of this series!
--What I Would Have Liked--
I might be biased because I love this author and this series so much, but again I'm having a hard time finding something that wasn't perfect. If I had to say anything, I would have liked a little bit more character development of Beckett and Easy. We got a deeper look at Marz but not the other two.
Very Brief Synopsis - We meet Crystal, the heroine, in HAIG, when she helps the team rescue Becca's brother, Charlie. In HAYC, we learn that Crystal has a lot of reasons and very little to no choice about working at Confessions, the strip club where she is a waitress. We also learn her boyfriend, Bruno, is an Apostle in Church's gang, the bad guys who are targeting Becca and Charlie.
Our hero in HAYC, Shane, is struck by Crystal from their first encounter. When he returns to Confessions to enlist her help, Crystal begs him to leave her alone. Shane doesn't and in fact, follows her back to her apartment. Her sister, Jenna, has a seizure and Shane helps Crystal with getting Jenna settled. Crystal decides she will help the team if she can.
Shane, our easygoing, Southern gentleman has a weak spot for damsels in distress, and if ever anyone needed a white knight riding to the rescue, it is Crystal. Due to her father's debts and the financial impact of Jenna's illness, Crystal is forced to work off the debt to Church. Crystal is biding her time, living for Jenna's graduation from college, when she plans to make a new start.
Shane, as mentioned, can't take a woman being harmed in any way, and when it becomes apparent that Bruno uses Jenna to take out his frustrations, Shane about loses his mind. When Jenna is taken by Bruno and his thugs in retaliation for Crystal helping the Hard Ink team, things go from really bad to nightmarish.
What worked for me - Shane is a great hero. He is haunted by the disappearance of his baby sister. He is determined to help his friends unravel the mystery of the conspiracy that drove his team out of the Army. He has a lot on his plate, then Crystal comes into the picture, and he absorbs her problems, as well. There are several scenes dealing with the mistreatment of women, and Shane's anguish is palpable. When he finally talks to Nick, his best friend and hero of HAIG, my heart broke for him. Shane tries so had to be gentle with Crystal, not to push her in any way. He knows there is more to the story with her, and is ever so patient in waiting for her to share her story.
Crystal was a different kind of heroine than most. She is stuck in an untenable situation due to having to repay her father's debt to Church, a local gang lord, and having to support her epileptic sister. The reality of her situation is horrific. The things she has been subjected to are degrading and she has the mental and physical scars to prove it. Crystal's reality is getting through each day as best she can while protecting her sister from the same debasement she endures. When Shane offers to help her, she can't quite bring herself to trust him. When Shane discovers her physical scars, she is so humiliated...The scene brought tears to my eyes. The last scene she had with Bruno, her intense reaction, made me a little nauseous. The scene was very well done and felt very real.
I love the team. They bicker and fight like brothers, providing very necessary comic relief for what, at its heart, is a very dark storyline.
What didn't work as well - Okay, let me completely contradict myself now. Shane is an awesome hero. Almost a little too awesome. Shane's character comes precariously close to being too perfect. He skates on the thin line between "Aw, that's so sweet **Swoon**" and "there is no way a guy would ever say that". He also suffers mightily from White Hat syndrome, and I had the feeling a few times that part of the attraction to Crystal was being able to rescue her from her horrific situation.
Kind of the same problems plagued me with Crystal. Did she really want Shane, or did she just want someone to help her escape her abusive, dangerous life? This is where instant love is hard to grasp, because the potential ulterior motives make that love suspect. And while I completely got why she had to continue her relationship with Bruno as "situation normal", a few of the scenes with Crystal and Bruno, especially the last one, squicked me out. The other thing that really bothered me about Crystal was the fact that she was able to even function as well as she did, given the horrific abuse she had suffered and the tremendous amount of stress she endured every single minute of every day. She was almost too well adjusted for her history. And yes, I get that she is a strong woman, but I'm not sure anyone could be that strong.
Bottom line - Time well spent. Despite my few issues, I really liked this story. We learn a little bit more about the overall arc. While Shane and Crystal's back stories are a little darker than normal for Romancelandia, I liked the characters a lot. Looking forward to the next entry in the Hard Ink series.
Top reviews from other countries
There are some potential triggers relating to rape and sexual abuse, however, it's sensitively written and is not graphic.
The characterisation is absolutely perfect, by the end of the first book I felt an affinity with the characters, by the end of this book I was wishing these people were real!
The plotline is so twisty and complex yet the author weaves a hell of a story complete with the clues and compass points needed to navigate the series of events.
This is the second book in the series and to obtain the best reading experience it would be best to read the books in order of publication.
There are some sex scenes and some swearing.
If you are a fan of the romantic thriller populated with ex special forces and strong women then I have no problem recommending the series.
Becca's brother, Charlie, was kidnapped in the previous book, he risked his life to get them information and now the team are determined to bring him safely home. Shane meets Crystal when he's undercover trying to find Charlie, she helps him get away safely and now he feels a certain responsibility towards her. Crystal has access to information that the team desperately need but just being in contact with Shane puts her in danger and all she wants is to keep her head down and protect her younger sister. Crystal was put in an impossible situation through no fault of her own and she's been fighting just to hold her head above water for several years, she has been desperately searching for a way out and she knows Shane may just hold the key to her escape but is she brave enough to take that first step?
We met all the guys in the previous book and I was definitely looking forward to reading Shane's story, he's one sexy alpha and he knows how to use his southern charm to get exactly what he wants. Shane is incredibly protective of anyone he cares about and he hates the situation that Crystal is in. What he wants more than anything is to take her to safety but they can't risk removing her until they have the information they need. It isn't easy leaving her in such a dangerous position but there is much more than one life at stake and the team are unable to walk away without trying to put a stop to the gang and their human trafficking operation. Crystal is a fabulous character, she is stuck in a living hell but she has managed to protect her sister Jenna from the worst of it. Jenna has no idea how much Crystal has sacrificed to keep her safe and I had to admire Crystal for everything she has done. She's a fighter, she has never given up on the chance of escape even though it has taken years of planning and she's still got a long way to go. She doesn't find it easy to trust Shane, which is completely understandable, but she knows that he is offering the best chance she's going to have of getting Jenna somewhere safe.
I loved Hard as You Can, it's got the perfect ratio of action and suspense to romance, we get to spend more time with the whole team and catch up with the previous couple while also getting to know some newbies and enjoying the relationship that develops between Shane and Crystal. I can't wait to read the rest of the series and see if the team manages to clear their names and what they decide to do with their lives at the end of it.
