Skywriting by Word of Mouth Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 118 ratings

John Lennon wrote Skywriting by Word of Mouth, an impressive collection of writings and drawings, during Yoko Ono's pregnancy with Sean, and always planned to have it published. The book's publication was a wish that seemed to end with Lennon's assassination in 1980 and the theft of the manuscript from the Lennons' home in 1982. When it was recovered and first published in 1986, Skywriting received immediate critical and popular acclaim. Filled with Lennon's extraordinary creative powers and lavishly illustrated with his own drawings, the collection reveals his fertile creative spirit up close and in full force. Included in Skywriting are "Two Virgins," written when the public learned that John and Yoko were living together as husband and wife, and John's only autobiography, "The Ballad of John and Yoko." In addition there are notes on his falling in love with Yoko, the breakup of the Beatles, his persecution by U.S. authorities, and his withdrawal from public life. This is a book with John Lennon's spirit on every page—a spirit the world needs to remember.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“John wrote Skywriting at a time when the world was wondering whatever happened to him. Why wasn’t he writing songs anymore? Well, this is what he was busy doing… I’m glad that I can now share these writings with you. I’m sure John would be, too.” — Yoko Ono (from the afterword)

“Had he never sung a note, John Lennon still might have made his mark - as a successor to Lewis Carroll, James Joyce, and other brilliantly playful molders and expanders of the English language.” — Los Angeles Times

“Candid and scathing...A reflection of its author’s creativity and enduring appeal.” — People

“Skywriting is a thrill… Lennon at his best.” — San Jose Mercury News

“It is no wonder John Lennon’s fans grow more in love with him as time goes by...His great influence on popular music makes him impossible to forget, so does this book.” — Houston Chronicle

“Marvelous, delightful reading and for John Lennon fans a must.” — Publishers Weekly

One of my favorite's. It's so nice to see some of John's quick wit in his own writing as opposed to all of the biographies telling or re-telling. Also nice to get to know some more of John's light-hearted side. Post-Beatles John is often depicted more seriously as a political/social activist and he is certainly deservedly admired as such; yet, this books shows how youthful and whimsical he could be. I have read it a few times cover to cover and actually am re-buying after my old beloved copy was appropriated by one of my dear college roommates. I hope he is still enjoying it as I will continue to enjoy my new copy.

It was so fascinating to read what John had to say about the Beatles, his life, Yoko and his word-play stories, which take a bit of getting used to, but once one does it's an amazing ride. It was incredibly enlightening to learn that he felt that the Beatles ruined his life; all their lives! He said they were addicted to drugs before they were even professionals. Great book. Buy it, enjoy it.

There is a small bit of regular autobiographical prose from Lennon that is readable and insightful about his views on life in general. But 90% of the book is Lennon's gobbly-gooky word play that for me at least gets very tedious and even annoying to the point where I just stop reading. It reminds me of James Joyce's changing punctuations in his writing and thereby 'changing' the perception of what you are reading. Lennon of course loves to constantly redirect the reader with his alternate spellings and word conjunctions but I'm not always sure there's much more meaning to it than there is meaning to walking through a house of mirrors. Sure things look different and warped but ultimately what's the point? Again I just find it more tedious than amusing or whatever it's supposed to be. I suppose being the clever one clever is what it is I guess.

Pros - it's a Beatles adjacent book.
Delve into John Lennons imagination and musings
It's unique.

Cons - delve into John Lennons imagination and musings

This book is strictly for a Beatlemaniac and shows the quirky side of John Lennon. I read it at the hight of my obsession with The Beatles and enjoyed it. Years later, I am not sure if I'd enjoy it as much now since my obsession has waned.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Lennon sincero, honrado, crítico y autocrítico
Reviewed in Spain on June 23, 2018
