Godhunter (The Godhunter Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,940 ratings

Godhunter—what a lackluster moniker.

The term "hunting" implies a distinct advantage, evoking images of skilled tracking and swift, decisive kills. But that's not my modus operandi. I prefer the stealthy approach, sneaking up on my targets when they're most vulnerable. And before you pass judgment, remember—I'm dealing with gods here. I do what I must to survive, not for sport or pleasure. I'm no crazed zealot; I eliminate these divine threats because the alternative is unacceptable.

Then he arrived, all electric eyes, a chiseled jawline, and a physique that would make any Norse god envious. Unsurprisingly, he's one of them—the very same god who saddled me with that underwhelming epithet. Yet, he claims to be on my side. I should probably eliminate him as well. Or at least attempt a strategic retreat, wait for an opportune moment, and strike when he's unawares. But there's an inexplicable pull, a gut feeling that I can trust this man. As a seasoned witch, I've learned to heed my gut, but this time, the feeling may be coming from somewhere a bit lower.

The Godhunter Series is a slow-build Why Choose Paranormal Romance with gods, shapeshifters, vampires, and every other supernatural beastie you can think of. It's award-winning, beloved by many, and long-running.

Trigger Warning: Although there is NO rape in this book, there is a dream scene with an enemy that involves consensual sex which the MC considers to be rape after she wakes up. The dream itself is not violent nor does it involve force, but some readers may be disturbed by the reaction of the MC after the fact.

The Godhunter Series is a slow-build Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance series with Gods, Shapeshifters, Witches, and mythical beasts that will keep you hunting for more.

This isn't a fairy tale.

I wondered briefly if Thor was worried about me and then tossed the idea out as utter nonsense. I couldn’t afford to think that way. No one was worried. No one was coming. This wasn't a fairy tale. There wasn't going to be a Prince Charming riding in to give me a happily-ever-after. In real life, Snow White stays dead, and Rapunzel grows old, alone in her tower. In real life, you gotta have enough sense to stay away from ugly b*tches offering you shiny apples and have enough balls to cut off your own hair and use it as a ladder if needs be. In real life, you gotta save yourself and the only happy endings are the ones paid for in massage parlors.

GH 2

No one messes with my cat.

“It’s okay, baby,” I whispered. “Mama’s just gonna to go kick some werewolf as$. You wait here.” I clucked my tongue at him reassuringly before I rolled away and backed up to face the wolfman.

Funny, but that little furball gave me the extra determination I needed to face down the monster. As pathetic as it may sound, that cat is like my child, and I was as enraged as any mother would be when their baby was in danger. Mess with me, and I'll defend myself, but mess with my cat, and I'll obliterate you. The wolfman was going down.

GH 1

A divine love triangle.

“You’ve traded immortality to be bound to me in a one-sided bond?” I was horrified.

“I’d be dead without you anyway.” He shrugged casually, his hands deep in the pockets of his jeans. Very flippant, very James Dean. Werewolf without a cause.

“I was the one that nearly killed you in the first place.”

“Because I was attacking you,” he grinned lopsidedly. “It was the best day of my life.”

Hilarious!
I was thoroughly impressed with this book Amy Sumida really pulls you into the world of Gods and Goddesses, Her world building was actually jaw dropping and it isn’t often that I am emersed in a book as I was with this one. I generally take about a day to finish a book never had it taken me two days to finish one. this one did but in the best of ways possible. Sumida made the Gods believable completely in love with Ull and Thor. Pan and Horus, even Mrs. E and Mr. T, all of them played a part Persephone with Hades in the Art room frickin loved it! I laughed so much through this book I often got asked if I was okay, Vervain had my humor, there were many times I read this and thought that Sumida wrote me into her book. I cackled like a crazy person at V’s jokes, the way she insulted her friends. (Believe me when I say it wasn’t done out of hate) The humor wasn’t the only thing here, Sumida actually made you fall in love with the villain. You had a part of you that wanted to reach out and hug them and make them feel better. I am glad I jumped off the deep end and purchased three more of her books without knowing how this one would turn out so I can jump back into her world at my leisure. The fight scenes were authentic, though honestly, I wouldn’t know because I’m a reader, not a fighter. But I believed them if that helps, Thor ladies, Yuhmeh. Well all of them are but the things he says to V is just downright panty melting. I can’t wait for more of V and her God Squad. I can’t wait to read more about Blue, and Pan, and all the rest. I want more and I can have that.

    (read #2)

Yep, I still love this series. Vervain (despite the horrible name) is a snarky, strong, kick-ass character and I love her. Even with all her issues. And that's part of WHY I love the character - she's not perfect. There is clearly some deep-seated trauma related to relationships that she struggles with all the time. That being said...

This is definitely a story that revolves ALL around Vervain. She is the center of the universe and everyone is focused on her and everything that could possibly happen to her will, and does, happen. So there is a little of that special snowflake going on...but I still somehow love her!

Maybe it is because of the humor and fun with which Sumida writes the entire story. Despite some seriously dark, trigger-possible material, GODHUNTER is light, fun, fast-paced, and hellaciously entertaining.

Maybe it's just that I have a tolerance for that, if everything else in the story works, and I like all the characters. Because, let's face it, I am reading paranormal reverse harem romance here folks! I WANT to be swept away and watch a strong, fun heroine overcome every obstacle (eventually) and get every guy she wants :) That's the whole point of the extreme escapism!

And Sumida has written a ton of great characters with depth and complexity and as many foibles and quirks as they have strengths. It makes it very easy to connect with them and care about what is happening.

Even more, the world-building in this series is stellar. Sumida has done a beautiful job of adding the fantastic to our everyday reality in a cohesive, consistent, and believable way. I find the way she has woven myths and gods and stories from so many different cultures together with her story to be fascinating.

And I am so glad there are 22 more books for me to enjoy! (again)

Also note: In addition to the trigger-warning, there is also a lot of sex in the series, but it is not explicit. Sumida manages to find a way to include it all, with plenty of romantic feels, but without great detail. Each scene employs euphemisms and romantic metaphor to let the reader know what is happening without spelling it all out. Or she employs fade-to-black implication. So really, just beware of the kidnap/abuse/mind-rape/rape angles that show up here in nearly every book.

    <i>UPDATE NOTES:
64% Sigh...I absolutely detest what Blue has done (*shudder*), and I hate romanticized rape. But I also love a good redemption story. So I am SO conflicted about Blue.
“When I saw your strength tempered by kindness,” he continued relentlessly, “your passion for your art, your search for beauty in all things, your determination to fight for your race even though you fear it will turn you into a monster, your effort to train yourself to be strong but retain the femininity you love, all the conflict and glory of you, I was overwhelmed. I didn’t stand a chance.”

64% Sigh...kind of a bummer because I like Finn. More than Thor.
"I caught his gaze and the intensity of it scared me. There was something there that I’d have to deal with someday and I wasn’t looking forward to it. I had a feeling he wouldn’t take the friend speech well. I partially blamed myself for encouraging him with the swan thing -insert sigh here-. Just as long as he didn't turn into a bush-lurking stalker, I'd be fine. I narrowed my eyes on him in consideration. Maybe I'd better trim the hedges around my yard."

63% BEST LINE EVER! I think I am stealing it :) "There was a bit more sand in my hourglass."
"I’ve waited forever for a man to call me tiny and give me that hand-spanning, romance novel line. My waist is small in comparison to the rest of me, I definitely have an hourglass figure, but in comparison to women's waists in general, it wasn’t all that little. There was a bit more sand in my hourglass."

47.0% Talk about romantic speeches! This one from Thor to Vervain is a doozy. SUCH a lovely lighthouse metaphor. But I can't help feel it's as much about her power as who she is. Which is kind of a bummer, and a worry for the future of this relationship. Wonder if he really sees her.

37% Vervain's relationship to magic and the ability to kill gods - nice metaphor.
“You have more magic than the average human and you know how to use it, how to manipulate it and direct it. You're a lighthouse shining through the darkness, calling it home.”

    30.0% LMFAO. Hilarious!
"One of the boulders actually had a lid which lifted to reveal a toilet. Very ingenious but also very frustrating if you happened to be a person unaccustomed to searching for a toilet inside rocks. I had actually wondered for a few confused moments if maybe gods didn’t share our bodily functions."

    25% Awesome line!
"In real life, you gotta save yourself and the only happy endings are the ones paid for in massage parlors."

    12% LMFAO! That's awesome.
"...fast manly hug. You know the quick grab, pat hard, and let go kind of hug that says I must care a lot about this guy because I’m touching him but let’s get this clear…I’m sooo not gay."

5% Honestly...this is the best beach description EVER!
"Sand sticks to you like an alien fungus that believes you’re its only hope of survival. Wet or dry it will attach itself to any part of your anatomy it can reach and those cool ocean breezes everyone loves so much? They are in cahoots with the vicious, alien-fungus sand and will happily fling a fine mist of the powdery annoyance all over you while simultaneously lulling you to sleep with its salt-laced caresses. Result? You wake up hours later to find not only has your sunblock died defending you but you’re now coated with a thin layer of sand, saltwater, and suntan lotion that has dried to a sticky crust. After you painfully scrape away the crust, you’ll find the red glow of your newly crisped skin beneath. The beach is evil, I tell you, evil."

I am pleasantly surprised with this author. I am an avid reader and it was nice to find a series so different from what I have read before. I enjoy the humor and can understand 90% of Ms. Sumida's references. Are the books perfect, no, however, Ms. Sumida does such a great job weaving the stories that I forget about the small stuff and want to find out what's next - so much that I purchased all 15 books within a few days from each other (plus the spin off that just came out). Could I forgive like the main character, probably not, but this is fantasy - a chance to view things differently, explore outside of your comfort zone. Would you forgive someone for doing such horrible things to you if you understood what made them the way they are? That’s up to you but don’t let that ruin the rest of the story for you. If there is something that I don't agree with a like in a book I just glance over it. I'm no prude, I read romance books and they have some pretty steamy stuff in it, but I wouldn't miss the "details" if Ms. Sumida decided to leave them out of her books. I categorize her books as fantasy not romance so a hint of what they are doing is fine. After book 3 I pretty much skipped those parts if I want to, they are not really needed for me to enjoy the rest of the book. Overall, I'm hooked and sad. Once book 15 has been read it will be over, whether it is the true end or over until the next book. My brain is fickle and having been able to read them back to back has been ideal for an avid reader. I have found authors I have enjoyed so much but after waiting a year for the next book, I found that my interest has waned in that story. I'm hoping this does not happen with Ms. Sumida's books.

I'm writing my review in response to user, Az, who wrote his on April 1, 2014 and gave this book two stars. At the time this was written, 69 people had said they found that review helpful and I feel that too much prominence and importance is being given to a short review that I so strongly disagree with. Please keep in mind that I have read the entire series and so I may reference things that do not happen in this book, however, I try to keep my references general enough to not spoil or reveal any future plot events.

I STRONGLY disagree with your assessment of the elements of rape in this book. What happens between Blue and Vervain is not rape in the traditional (aka usual) sense of the situation/event. There is no violence between the two when the rape happens. There is no use of force to physically or magically overpower the woman (like with brute strength, fists, rope, spells, or magical bindings of some kind). There is no intent by the man to dominate or subjugate or humiliate the woman, nor to injure her or cause her pain.

Blue takes advantage of the incredible attraction and chemistry that ALREADY existed and NATURALLY existed between them. He uses magic to cloud Vervain's mind so that she forgets the reasons she had to refuse him. The sex that occurred between them was enjoyable for both partners - very enjoyable and very consensual. But it was ONLY consensual on Vervain's part because of Blue's use of magic on her, and that is why it is rape. Vervain might as well have been drugged. Maybe thinking of it as being taken advantage of while very tipsy/slightly drunk, by a man who you were already very attracted to but for some (valid) reason decided it was better to not have sex with, is a better description, since really all Blue did was remove the inhibitions that were preventing Vervain from acting on her feelings.

That is why I said this wasn't a 'traditional' rape situation/event. During their sexual union (which is technically rape), Vervain doesn't feel like she is being raped, she's too busy having a good time. During the sex, there were no fear, no tears, no anger, no shame, no holding someone down against her will. It's only afterward that she, rightfully, freaks out about what happened. I don't even think that reading about the event itself would trigger any emotional flashbacks in readers who are survivors of rape, because even though its graphic sex, it's not graphic rape. Reading about the aftermath, where Vervain reacts emotionally, might... MIGHT, be a trigger for some readers, but Vervain's main reaction is one of anger, preventing it from ever happening again and preparing to get her revenge, instead of wallowing in feelings of shame or helplessness, so I'm not overly worried about that being harmful or upsetting to certain readers. In fact, it might be cathartic.

However, it WAS rape and I am not trying to justify or excuse it in any way. Vervain feels dirty and used, humiliated and vulnerable when she comes to her senses. She is horrified, frightened, and would happily neuter, maul, or even kill Blue when she realizes what he did to her. It's just, when most people hear 'rape' they think (or at least I think), about the use of force in some way, about the woman being afraid, threatened, her crying and being hurt and that is NOT what happened here.

I actually think Blue's character is awesome, except for the raping and stalking of unwilling women, which he stops doing early in book 2.
Blue is a handsome, charming, charismatic man (just like serial murderder/rapist Ted Bundy) with impeccable and aristocratic mannerisms. He's a villain that is trying to do the wrong thing for the right reason or the right thing in the wrong way (trying to deal with earth's overpopulation problem by instigating World War 3 in order to kill massive numbers of humans. Yes, he would personally benefit from the deaths... but he also truly believes that it would ALSO benefit the surviving human population, the environment, the planet and wildlife, too. And he kind of has a point. In fact, his point is so valid that *I* agree with him. His actions would be great for people and the planet as a WHOLE, not so great for the dead or grieving INDIVIDUAL people, though.

I think Blue is an awesome and interesting and very complex character. He was emotionally scarred by the murder of his sister and mother and father by his own brothers and hasn't been mentally 'right' since the day they died. He is consumed with bitterness and drowning in hate. He is both tormentor and victim. Vervain describes him as "beautiful and broken, charming and vicious, evil and brilliant... and out of his f*ing mind." Another time, she says, "Blue was always charming. Even back when he'd been a psychopath, threatening to kill me when he got bored, he'd still been charming about it."

I also disagree with your assessment of the GodHunter being "never ending series that just gets worse and worse until you don't care about it anymore." This series is nothing like the "Jaws" shark franchise, whose movie sequels lacked real substance and quality and instead relied on the name "Jaws" to draw in customers and make money. Each book in the God Hunter series is a quality work of fiction. The plots are interesting and complicated, thoroughly fleshed out with very few holes or dead ends.

The interactions between characters, especially Vervain and the people she loves, is amazing, both complex and inspiring. Their behavior and thoughts about one another is something anyone who wants to have a successful relationship should contemplate and keep close to their own heart. And I love that they don't always get along. They argue and fight, and occasionally scream or cry at each other, or stomp away while still angry. Like most people, they are sometimes disrespectful or rude, even unfairly. But they always confront one another about the bad behavior, point it out to him or her, and demand s/he acknowledge that he was unfair, or disrespectful or whatever wrong thing was done. And then they forgive. Even when they argue, you can still feel the love that exists between them (and I don't mean the arguments seem false or shallow). They discuss problems and concerns all the time and compromise with each other. People in relationships in her books actually TALK and communicate with one another. There are real reasons why they love one another. Yes, sometimes relationships develop faster than I think is appropriate or realistic, but after that one complaint, I think the relationship is awesome. Their entire relationship isn't based solely on sexual attraction and two minutes of talking, like what you see in so many other romance books. They Really love and Really have reasons to love one another and Really fight and Really make up.

There are hidden and open messages in her books, as she tries to make readers aware of real-life injustices happening somewhere in the world so we can help right them. The reactions of the characters to events are real and reasonable. The dialogue is witty and awesome. Each character is fully fleshed out, with his or her own personality and mannerisms, dreams and fears. They grow in maturity and change in other deep ways, too. This is not a book where character growth means someone got his or her hair cut or a new tattoo.

I have a few things to admit now. (No, I am not Amy Sumida writing anonymously). First, I have read all of the GodHunter series multiple times. My OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) means I engage in obsessive behavior and re-reading books I enjoy is one of the ways I try to channel my OCD tendencies. That being said, OCD re-reading of books has become a habit of mine. If I like a book, I will re-read it to the nth degree and, when I am not re-reading it, I will THINK about it. When I clean around the house, I listen to audiobooks on my headphones, not music. When each new book comes out, I re-read the entire series before reading the newest book (as an exercise in delayed gratification).

I revealed this for two reasons: First, to let you know I am very biased in my praise of the GodHunter series (since I believe in full disclosure). Second, to let you know that I probably have a greater understanding of her books than you do and of what makes a quality book. Because I can't OCD re-read crap. It bugs me. I start obsessing on all the holes in the plot, any ridiculous themes or elements in the fictional world, all the ways the characters aren't acting and reacting like normal people would in that situation, whining about how they can't possibly love one another when they haven't had any meaningful conversations, how inappropriate the woman's arousal is under those circumstances, how ridiculous the magical or technologically advanced medical treatments are, etc. And all that mental critiquing detracts from my enjoyment of the book's good qualities, makes me angry, and also makes me feel petty and mean. I don't like feeling that way.

Now, I have to *really* like a book in the first place to want to re-read it, so it's not like I do this for every book I buy. But I have, more than once unfortunately, liked a book enough for my OCD to kick in and make me want to re-read it, and then, by the time I've read it three times, I no longer like the book because I have discovered so many logical flaws, plot holes, or unrealistic actions/reactions by the characters that I can no longer enjoy reading an otherwise good book. That hasn't happened to me with the GodHunter series and I admit that I was worried it would when I saw how many books in this series she had published. I was worried that she had begun to focus more on quantity than quality, but that's not what happened.

I am not the kind of person who loves a song and then idolized the band/singer, who loves a movie and then falls in love with the actor/actress, and then thinks that person walks on water and wants to copy their clothes or behavior. I care about results, not so much the people making it happen. I tell you this because I really enjoy Amy Sumida's Twilight Court series, too. However, I am not so obsessed and in love with her writing that I am unable to recognize its flaws, like the fact that, more than once, for no logical or magical rhyme or reason, something happens that is a revelation or help to Seren, like her randomly getting a vision of a magical talent that she didn't realize she had and conveniently getting this vision right before she will need to use her newly discovered talent. Really? Really!!! Sumida couldn't have Seren get in an argument with someone at the Twilight Court and make her give that fairy jerk a rude hand gesture, like the finger, which accidentally releases and reveals her magical talent? Instead Sumida followed the lazy and uncreative route and let Seren have a random vision!

And the GodHunter series needs a better editor/proof reader! I don't know if the errors seem more numerous than they really are because I can read/listen to two and a half book in one day or if listening to the book instead of reading it makes errors more noticeable but it drives me crazy sometimes! Oh, and there's this scene in one of the GodHunter books where a god pushes Vervain out of the path of a certain-death blow and dies instead. Every time I read that part, I just roll my eyes and mutter unkind words about unnecessary drama. Knowing that this deathblow is beheading by sword, think about that situation for a second... It's not physically possible for a six-foot-plus-tall giant to bodyslam tiny five-foot-tall Vervain out of the way of a sword that is about cut her head off and have his head be cut off instead. Not when the sword was moving so fast and already so close that Vervain herself had no hope of avoiding the swing. And in book one, Vervain describes fully shifted werewolves as being the size of a pony, but later on in the series, they are small enough to pass as ordinary wolves in the eyes of ignorant humans.

So, there you go, I do think the GodHunter series is awesome, but don't think it's perfect, and it's definitely NOT horrible like what you described.

2.0 out of 5 stars Aucune profondeur
Reviewed in France on July 5, 2024

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely engaging and full of laughs

This book, and series are really amazing. The characters are well written and have great character development. Vervain is a spicey, easy to love character. I was rooting for her the entire time, and just have to love the sass and sarcasm that are in no short supply.
So hard to put any of the books down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Erfrischend gut

Das Buch war eine wirkliche Entdeckung. Wer z.

5.0 out of 5 stars ticked all the boxes

I really enjoyed this book, ticked all the boxes for me. Funny, edgy with plenty of action. For once the inclusion of other suitors was handled realistically and organically with a few wtf moments from the MFC. I am ready to go on a journey to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enter a weirdly wonderful world of gods, angels, humans and mythical creatures
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 15, 2014
If you love reading about gods and mythical creatures; crave a good plot with an independent, sassy, funny and courageous heroine; enjoy the odd hunky, gorgeous warrior man for an occasional steamy roll in the hay; plus so much action your tea will go cold, then this is the book for you. Read the whole series within a week and a half and am now reintroducing myself to the hubby and kids. There are a number of typos in the books but it really doesn't detract from what is a well written and highly imaginative series. Can't wait for the next one but it's not easy to find out when it's going to be out.
