Nine Volt Heart (Rain City Comedy of Manners Book 3) Kindle Edition
after your picture is on the cover of Rolling Stone?
Two musicians meet by accident in Seattle. Jason, the infamous singer-songwriter, is a victim of falsehoods spread on the Internet. Susi, a classical musician whose previous career came off the rails, is building a new life as a music teacher. Their professional yearnings quickly become entwined in unexpected ways.
Jason wants Susi to sing the haunting songs he’s written for her, if he can get his ex-wife out of his recording contracts. Susi doesn’t want to sing in public, and complains that Jason disturbs her hard-won serenity.
Each tries to hide deep secrets from the other. However, in love—and on the Internet—who really has secrets?
Passion, mistaken identities, and a menacing stalker twist a love-at-first-sight story into a roller-coaster ride through the backstreets of Seattle, where tourists never go. Where both karma and sunshine can be so unpredictable in April.
Nine Volt Heart is a light-suspense romantic comedy. It contains explicit sex scenes and the undeleted expletives you’d expect at rock recording sessions in Seattle.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2014I came across this book as a Kindle Countdown Deal and thought it sounded interesting so I'd give it a try. The reviews peaked my interest as well. I figured that all (nine) of the 4-5 star reviews were friends supporting the author but I would try it anyway. I expected an immature writing style with trendy, shallow, and immature characters. Instead I received an intelligent and maturely written story, with equally interesting primary and secondary characters. There is no brooding alpha male, nor 'plucky', bi-polar, too-stupid-to-live heroine.
The Hero is a singer/song writer/musician in a band that focuses on alternative-rock/country/grassroots/hillbilly style music. (Did I get that right?) He is a high school drop out, that ended up in the big time. He's consumed with creating and performing rather than the business side. He is currently working on finishing up a contractual obligation for an album for his nasty, soon-to-be ex-wife. He also has a stalker fan who claims he's his brother. The heroine is a classically trained vocalist who no longer performs but teaches music at a private high school in the Seattle area. She is currently putting together a program for the summer session and is working on the funding. These two meet and are clueless about each other's musical fame.
The amount of musical knowledge or ability I possess could fit on the head of a pin, (Okay, I do know who Bob Dylan is, and Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash) yet, when I read this book I was right there with the band. I became a voyeur to their practice and recording sessions. I really don't understand any of it, but I felt like I did. That's the sign of a good writer. The author apparently knows of what she writes, and that's refreshing. Oh, and let's not forget the romance! Loved that part too.
As the book description states....secrets, songs, and stalkers quickly entwine their lives in unpredictable ways. Yes, they do.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2013The subject matter, a rock and roll love story set in Seattle immediately piqued my attention. Once I started it, I could not stop reading it. I actually made myself put it down to go to sleep, but then couldn't sleep because my mind was racing so much to try to figure out the mysteries in the book. Luckily, I was able to finish the next morning to put my mind at ease.
Jason and Susi come from different musical worlds: rock and roll and classical music. Can they be compatible? Great characters, character development, and wow, what a story. Seriously, get this book. You won't regret it.
I wish the author had a soundtrack available for purchase that I could have listened to while reading the book. The juxtaposition of rock, folk, and classical (and Seattle) is so interesting, and I guess I'll just need to make a playlist based on the list if tracks in the back of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2013Susi and Jason belong together. Traditional step-by-step "dating habits" inhibit Susi to close her heart and stop her from making a "love" decision. A life decision that seems easy for the reader, while also realizing Suzi's sorrow is deep and painful. Will she let go of the pain? Connecting with a soul mate in dreary, wet Seattle is not as easy as playing music with well trained and talented like friends. Two good looking and talented people, Jason and Suisi are working out problems from previous lives, working through their problems with friends who help heal with music, song and patience. Nine Volt Heart is a nice change from murder, violence, cursing language and science fiction plots. I liked the extensive play list of blues, classical, grunge, and hillybilly talent, some I need to research. Thanks Annie Pearson.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2013... You'll be up all night. Great love story with plenty of plot twists and suspense, set in a richly detailed context of the art and business of making music. Jason and Susi are meant to be together, if only they can figure out their mutual misunderstandings over mistaken identity and who are the good guys and truly creepy bad guys in both the real and online worlds. The technical details about music made this a truly absorbing read. Looking forward to the further adventures of these characters! [Carol Buchmiller]
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2013I simply couldn't put this book down! It's a love story of two main characters trying to move on from deeply damaging pasts who find common ground - and complications - in the consuming passion for music that they share. Side-by-side with this is a mystery - who's been stalking one of them and how far will this sick person go? Throughout all of this the book simply vibrates with music - I agree with another reviewer in wishing there were an accompanying soundtrack so that we could listen along! The resulting whole is a completely satisfying read that will pull you in and keep you turning pages until it's done.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2014I really enjoyed reading this novel! I have to agree with another reviewer regarding a sound track. While I wasn't familiar with a lot of the artists named throughout the book, I looked a few of them up on UTube and enjoyed listening to them. The plot and romance had me anxiously turning each page and while it wasn't a quick read , I found it hard to put down. I look forward to more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2013A taut, stylish mystery revealing unique Seattle neighborhoods, conflicting subcultures and avarice present in the alternative country scene. Very likable characters, multi-generational conflicts tear-inducing performance sequences, loyalty tests of new and fearful romances and a mystery embedded in bastardly blogging behavior. Pearson has great grounding in facts and feelings throughout leading the reader to personal connections with the trials and triumphs of her characters. We can only hope she has a series in mind for these terrific characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2013I felt bad for the musician in this book! I really enjoyed it though. It is true that many people in the creative arts in general are not given a lot of privacy. Its a side of the creative business that people love to ignore or just don't care about making any difference. Two thumbs up!
