Life is good indeed, especially if you’re a thirty-something expat living in an area of Provence where people would kill to live. And do! When Maggie’s new best friend is arrested for murder Maggie is determined to find the real culprit. Trouble is, there are a few roadblocks in her way, like an old friend on the verge of divorce who’s chosen Maggie’s house to have her nervous breakdown in, an ex-paramour who has the power to make Maggie’s life miserable—and does—and oh, yes, a killer as warped and determined as any Maggie has encountered in her four years living in France.

It is a very good mystery . I enjoyed language , atmosphere, characters ,romance and settings (Provence with changing seasons, landscapes ,aromatic dishes and lemon -rosemary scent in the air) . Just delightful and addictive lecture to the point that it makes you obsessed about your future vacations in Provence. I had the same vibes after watching a movie "under the Tuscan Sun" sans murder , of course. I would recommend it to everyone who likes well written ,meaningful and satisfying mysteries.

This is the fifth book in the series, which has a very strong overall story arc. Do not begin here, most of the story will be incomprehensible.

Maggie and Laurent have recovered from their experiences in Paris (Murder in Paris, Book 4) and returned to their home in Provence. Maggie is now 8 months pregnant and the couple is deep in preparations for their new arrival. They are shocked when Grace and her daughter Zouzou unexpectedly arrive from America. Apparently Grace's marriage was in trouble, deep trouble so Grace had fled to France, to be with her friends. Unfortunately for all a few hours later another friend of Maggie's was charged with murder an Maggie, being Maggie once again decided that she would need to solve the case - even over Laurent's strong objections.

This is a charming series, filled with interesting (although not always sympathetic) characters, with intriguing plots and set in beautiful Provence. Unfortunately the author (authors?) have decided to pursue quantity over quality. The books in this series have been arriving about two a year since its' inception, and this is just one of several series credited to this author. Editing for the books in this series has been laughable to say the least. Descriptions of characters, even the main characters changes repeatedly, even basic information as to eye color, height etc. In many ways this series reminds me of the Nancy Drew mysteries I loved as a child to the point that I wonder if these books, like those Nancy Drew stories, were actually written by ghost writers under a pseudonym.

As the series continues the editing issues seem to be improving - or perhaps I am becoming accustomed to them. In any case I enjoy the series, and plan to continue reading.

Really. Every Susan Kiernan-Lewis story has me reading ferociously from beginning to end. I have not been able to put any of them down! The characters are wonderful--I love them all. I love the French ambiance, the descriptions of the way the French feel about Americans and vice-versa, the exciting way each installment unfolds, the sumptuous food and it's importance in every Maggie Newberry story, the relationships between all the characters but mostly, of course, Maggie and Laurent. Laurent is a beautiful character--just the most perfect man--and somehow he seems so much like my own husband. Whatever, you may say, but it works for me! Thank heavens I have found SKL and her wonderful work! I am enjoying reading every word! But, one tip, you should start with the first book and read them in order! On to book 6 (which I already own)!

I’ve read a few of these Maggie Newberry books. They haven’t been in order as I was able to get each one free through book club offers. They are easy to read and the later ones are a bit better. The repeated characters are consistent throughout. If you like to get recipes for some French cuisine they pop up at the end as the male lead Laurent loves to cook. The mysteries are pretty basic with not much surprise or twist and turns. They are very light reads if you just want something easy on the brain you can read quickly. I’m not sure if other reviewers comment on her sprinkling of French phrases but it seems a little unnecessary to me. Not familiar enough to comment on their accuracy. I guess it is suppose to add flavor. The leads, Maggie and Laurent, meet in one book and then marry and begin a family. Their entire relationship is a bit far fetched but well it is fiction after all. I’m not saying something like this could never happen but it is a stretch. And she seems to be torn between her independence and her relationship with Laurent, who is pretty much a chauvinist (with a very dubious past) most of the time but puts up with her forays into crime solving for which she is apparently a magnet. Sometimes it is an interesting juxtaposition but I’m not sure how long it would hold up in real life. Most of the relationships seem to involve beautiful or handsome people and attraction on that basis apparently makes the relationship sink or swim. A lot of mystery about the characters floating around but no in depth explanations. So if you like a reminder of France and, in this book, Aix en Provence as well as a simple mystery then you might enjoy this.

This is the first book of this authors that I have read. It was pretty good. The setting is France. Maggie is the main character (it is part of a series but I have not read any of the books before this one.) one of my main “issues” with the story is that there are so many characters ~Maggie, Julia, Lilly, Danielle, Grace, Annette, Michelle and there are the male characters ~Laurent, Florrie, Jean-Luc, Roger, Mathieu, Jacques to name a few. Julia’s ex-boyfriend Jacques is killed and Maggie, at eight months pregnant, is trying to find the killer so her friend Julia won’t spend the rest of her life in prison. It was a fairly unique story that got a little tedious at times and a little “whack-a-do” close to the end.

I particularly liked this book showing more of Laurant, Maggie, and Grace's relationships... as well as the mystery and the new baby and Zou-Zou.

As usual I'm reading these books a little out of order but I just had to answer a few questions before I will go on to read book 7 etc. This one has our heroine at 8+ months pregnant chasing down a poisoner and trying to get a good friend out of a French jail. Lots of twists and turn to this one. Susan Kiernan-Lewis is great at not letting you know Who Done It. Pick it up and have a good read. Maybe starting with book 1 would be a great idea.

I am enjoying this series, BUT..... I think it is arrogant and stupid for an American author to put French words and phrases in the book without having the sense to get the syntax verified by an authority. It means that all the French speakers in her books do not know how to string together two words of their own language. Very irritating and an exceedingly weak point in otherwise well thought out stories.

This was my first Maggie Newberry Mystery and l thoroughly enjoyed it. I love murder mysteries set in France and especially those set in Provence........such a beautiful corner of the world. A clever plot containing lots of potential suspects meant the murderer was not revealed until the end of the book. As Maggie definitely likes to get herself into some sticky corners, it made for an entertaining read.
