The Grrrl of Limberlost (Rain City Comedy of Manners Book 1) Kindle Edition
A murder in a Seattle coffee house. A murder on a decaying boat dock. Samsara Byron, the post-punk security expert, insists this has nothing to do with her. She’s busy fending off an attack on the world’s cyber infrastructure—if only she could get a cell signal.
Sam’s a rock star in the international security community: speaking at Black Hat conferences; investigating conspiracies with the FBI and NSA.
But Sam’s family called her home to exurban Limberlost: her hippie father is accidentally embroiled with gangsters. The boy next door is hiding from the men who killed his partner. And the local weather guru says the Puget Sound Conversion Zone will see record snow. Seattle is paralyzed when it snows.
This soft-boiled thriller longs for romance, if anyone can find time. The story does contain inexplicit sex scenes and the language you’d expect from gangsters, porn farmers, and retro Riot Grrrls.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2016I got to this book because, Girl of the Limberlost. Reminds me of the time almost 50 years ago that I read Rebecca when someone's mom told me to check out Rececca of Sunnybrook Farm. THAT was a thing. So far, it's deeply fun. But I don't LOVE rollercoasters, so I may come back to adjust my rating. Wild. Great descriptions. Second dead frozen naked body, less than halfway through. I'll let you know.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2013I have some really mixed feelings about this book. I loved the main characters, Sam and Matt and Matt's family, but with the rest of the characters I always felt like I was missing something, was maybe a step behind somehow. As other reviewers have stated, the book is hard to get into. I kept track. I was lost until 22% into my Kindle. The story was told from one of three characters, back and forth, so by the time I felt I was getting comfortable with the background of one character, the story would switch to another and I was lost once again. Some of the chapters were even just a couple sentences in length before I was pulled back into a different plot yet again. I know the author wanted to let the reader in on the secrets of Limberlost bit by bit, but what ended up happening with me was that I was losing parts of the story bit by bit. At the end of the book there were questions I did not have answers to that I am sure were buried within the pages somewhere.
The only reason I am giving the book three stars is because of the two main characters, Sam and Matt. Pearson did a wonderful job in giving Sam a unique personality, a woman who can take care of herself in any situation, and she became larger than life as the story progressed. I was wishing more of the book involved her. Matt alone probably would not have been as interesting, but the teaming up of Matt with Sam made for an exciting chase scene and ending to the book as the story of the many different characters was being woven together for the reader. Unfortunately, by end I must have missed some important clues along the way and by the very end, all I cared about was where the book would leave Sam and Matt in their lives.
I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2013Written by a former technical writer for Microsoft, Annie Pearson, the protagonist of The Grrrl of Limberlost is mathematics wizard / network security programmer/ developer Samsara (“Sam”) Byron. The story involves murder, mayhem, Russian gangsters, stolen computer code, an eclectic array of characters that inhabit an island in the Puget Sound, family dysfunction and decades old misunderstandings.
While I was not immediately pulled into the story, it was worth plunging forward. Ultimately, I enjoyed the book immensely. I found the beginning confusing, the plot a bit too convoluted, the scenarios implausible, and some of the characters almost caricatures – particularly the Eastern Europeans. However, Sam and her cadres of quirky relatives, friends, and neighbors are appealing and there were moments when I laughed out loud – a reaction generally reserved for Stephanie Plum books.
All in all I liked the book. I did receive a free galley from Netgalley.com in exchange for a review or I probably wouldn’t have read The Grrrl of Limberlost. But I’m glad I did. This is a strong 3.75 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2013I received this book free from Net Galley in exchange for a review.
I had a hard time getting into this book. It is written from The point of view of three different people. However, once I figured out how everyone was connected, it was actually a pretty good read. The characters were well developed and the plot had a LOT of twists.
The quirky supporting characters gave me a few laughs and the love story wasn't all erotic. It was more like the characters were actually telling what they felt as opposed to what they did.
This book is definitely for a true mystery reader as things are not really spelled out right away, which definitely held my attention. I like putting the pieces together and not having everything spelled out for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2013The Grrl of Limberlost by Annie Pearson is a modern-day story centered around several intriguing characters called Sam, Matt, Roz, Pippy and Huck. Pay no attention to Huck because he's a worthless piece of . . . I'll let you pick an appropriate name for him while enjoying this book. The main character Sam is a tech-savvy, attractive young woman who might work for Amazon, Microsoft or a private contractor. Sam is bright, mathematically intelligent and adventurous enough to move from her island home to Seattle and prosper in the "big" city. She hooks-up with an old island neighbor, slightly broken, not-so-much friend and takes him on the ride of his life in her classic car. Oh yes, there are a few additional European thug-type characters who add humor with an occasional dead body or two thrown-in as collateral damage. Annie Pearson has a way of surprising you and keeping you interested with blogs, cell phone messages and text messages. What would a modern-day story be without modern technology? Answer: Nowhere. Or on an island in Puget Sound without power.
I liked and highly recommend The Grrl of Limberlost. I look forward to more from a promising Seattle author, Nine Volt Heart by Annie Pearson.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2013A crisp, fast-paced thriller with great local Pacific Northwest color and absorbing detail about computer security, malware, and the Russian mafia. Not to mention aging hippies, dead bodies (some frozen, some not), PTSD, and the stresses and strains of holidays with family. And then there's the weather. Three characters tell three seemingly unrelated stories until they intersect in unexpected ways, infused with the rich technical detail that Ms. Pearson handles so well. Will Matt and Samsara overcome a decades-old misunderstanding to find True Love? Who is YtBlueHatLvr? And will Nicky's Armani suit ever be the same? A GREAT read. [Carol]
