Selected Poems First Edition, Kindle Edition

Chosen by Eliot himself, the poems in this volume represent the poet’s most important work before Four Quartets. Included here is some of the most celebrated verse in modern literature—“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” “Gerontion,” “The Waste Land,” “The Hollow Men,” and “Ash Wednesday”—as well as many other fine selections from Eliot’s early work.

I’ll admit that this collection of poems by T.S. Eliot may be difficult to read at times. Eliot’s poetry is chock full of historical references not often familiar to an average reader and a verbose vocabulary that had me referencing the Merriam-Webster site multiple times per poem. However, between reaching for the dictionary and the history textbook, the reader will find in Eliot’s work many perfectly comprehensible gems of imagery. Lines such as “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons,” “She has a bowl of lilacs in her room / And twists one in her finger while she talks,”and “Madame Sosostris, famous clairvoyante, / Had a bad cold, nevertheless / Is known to be the wisest woman in Europe” all use detail and careful word choice to create undeniable atmosphere in the poems. When reading, one is transported to the rainy and chilly streets of London, yellow-tinged smog in the air, or out into the dry desert wasteland. I would not recommend this book for beach-reading, but if you are looking for examples of how to create an excellent image, this is a good place to start.

Great introduction to Eliot's poetry with notes that help to grasp a better understanding of the complexity within his works. If you're going to buy a "first Eliot book", this should be it.

A classic that never fails me. The language and the imagery are unsurpassed; the book used to live in my handbag, now it lives in my Kindle in my handbag.

This volume is very thin and poorly printed for the price. There are much better alternatives such as the one by Modern Libraries and the Barnes and Noble Classics edition. They are similarly priced or cheaper, and the print quality is much better.
