"A rich, sensual, pull-at-the-heartstrings romance"–Monica McCarty, NYT bestselling author

From USA Today bestselling author Glynnis Campbell...A young jeweler to Queen Mary becomes a fugitive for a crime she didn't commit and must rely on the mercy of a heroic huntsman who steals her heart, but who could betray her at any moment.

A woman on the run…a man on the hunt.
He has forty days to earn her trust. She has forty days to win his heart. They have forty days to outwit their enemies.

When Florie Gilder, the once-respected jeweler to Queen Mary, claims sanctuary in an abandoned church for a crime she didn't commit, huntsman Rane MacFarland, a local hero of the common folk, vows to protect her. But when his overlord charges him with preventing the fugitive lass's escape, Rane finds himself torn between duty and desire when he begins to fall for his spirited captive. And when powerful foes conspire to turn Rane and Florie against each other, they need courage, wits, and, most of all, love, to survive.

I loved this book from beginning to end. I loved the writer's choice of words, use of words and her fun with words. I loved how the story ended. Many writers rush to the end. This story came to an worthy of the story. My measure of likeability of a story is whether or not I would read it again and again. This one, I definitely would. I wish the author had taken a wee bit of time to explained how Lady Mavis found out about Florie and the pomander. Even though, it was not said, the Lady obviously knew something as she hoped "Gilly" would not find out the truth before she got her hands on the pomander and had it melted down, of course, destroying all evidence of the truth. I also wish, the writer had given the foster father the respect of a name. He was always referred to as the foster father. I mean, after all, even Wat had a name. Also, the foster father, who obviously loved Florie and her mother, was not addressed properly until after, Florie and Rane, had, obviously, been married and she was with child. He was brought in at a good point but, Lord Gilbert should have had a conversation with him. We learned thru Rane that a conversation had taken place between the two fathers. But I loved how the Lord Gilbert shows appreciation to the foster father in the end. It's a well rounded story. I loved Rane's name. It was so different. And I keep trying to find things to pick at but, nonetheless, this is a good read. I loved Florie's spirit and sass and I loved her soft spirited, caring archer. The cover was suitable, but it didn't do much for me.

A good plot keeps you in suspense. I always knew what was coming next in this plot. I think that makes it fairly average.
So I gave it an average score.

This riveting twas a full of love lost then found that it was an endearing tale to read. I'm glad to read the villain didn't get away.

While a bit slow and predictable, a lovely escape to a day when men were gentlemen and women were feminine yet strong.

I loved the story of Florie searching for her birth father while honoring her mother's memory.

Rane was a player, but hadn't yet met his match until Florie came along. She wasn't anything like the giddy girls he trifled with. She was strong, intelligent, small and beautiful.
Florie was a very talented goldsmith, and Rane an excellent hunter. The two were so different, but both were proud yet stubborn. In other words a perfect match.

Mavis' character reminded me of the typical evil queen/witch of storybooks; jealous, mean, shallow and heartless.

I would have greatly enjoyed her death!

While some of this story was slow, it did have some nice twists and turns, and was generally very well written. Nice very juicy bits, not for the innocent reader! I recommend this for lovers of romance.

Florie is fleeing from Sheriff Gilbert's men, blamed for theft from Lady Mavis. However, she had only taken back what was hers, and even have the nobleman back the money after Way had mistakenly sold the heirloom. In the dark, she struggled through the woods until an arrow struck her leg.
Rane was hunting and had pulled his shot off course when he had been aiming at a deer that Florie startled. His arrow struck the woman. He races to her, built ridden. Florie asks him for sanctuary and he takes her into a dilapidated church. The blind priest Father Caston grants her 40 days. Rane vows to tend to Florie's wound. But the gunman and goldsmith apprentice find themselves in a battle of wills against their better judgement versus their hearts. Rand has sworn fealty to Gilbert while Florie is possibly a noblewoman. Learning of Florie's sanctuary, Gilbert tells Rand to prevent her escape or he would hang. While her husband goes on an errand for the Queen, Man is plots revenge against Florie and the Scots by subterfuge with England.

I thought the characters were very interesting. I have always loved history in the story. I'm not good at writing my thoughts but just know I really enjoyed this story. 😉

A beautiful moving story of a woman accused of thieving by the manipulative evil wife of the Sheriff and then sort of rescued by a huntsman. Set in old time Scotland it has politics, betrayal, subterfuge, loss and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone Loves a Warrior Who Looks as if he's Descended from Norse Gods

Rane is Lord Gilbert's huntsman and vassal, Florie is an apprentice goldsmith who's running from the long arm of the law in the form of a posse sent out by the sheriff, also Lord Gilbert. All GC's saviour-heroes are men of honour. How could they be anything less? Their word is their bond. Rane is a really well-drawn male lead, gradually revealed through Florie's POV. The romance dominates, set against life-or-death stakes which create tension and reveal character through the leads' choices. Set in 1545 in an abandoned Scottish church in a background of warring monarchs of Scotland, England and France creating instability, the characters and world come to life through sparkling prose and lively dialogue, and lower-class lifestyle is shown in detail. I loved everything about this story.

I really like Glynnis Campbell's writing style and was excited for this book. Rane and Florie did not entice me as much as the Rivenloch girls but they were still an awesome couple and I thouroughly enjoyed reading their stories and thus can only highly recommend this book. The ending was a bit rushed though that is why I am only giving four stars
