Talmudic Advice 2020: Lively and Fun Jewish Topics for Everyone Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

This fun phenomenal book provides the general reader with a lively philosophy of Judaism through a series of short and easy to understand essays.

This outstanding book offers sharp, witty and balanced analysis, insight and advice on a variety of perplexing personal, religious and social issues that are faced by observant Jews in particular and by all peoples of all faiths in general.

This is theology based on Jewish sources and traditions in a new key - accessible to the world - unencumbered by philosophical jargon and pretentious theological pomposity.

The more than 150 mostly urgent and sometimes seemingly trivial questions and answers that the author includes here appeared in his monthly column "Dear Rabbi Zahavy" in the Jewish Standard in Teaneck, New Jersey, usually on the first Friday of the month in 2013-2020.

The author studied with Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik and Professor Jacob Neusner. But unlike his ponderous teachers, he writes for everyone in a clear and transparent and entertaining voice.

The content is profound and meaningful but the container is as clear as a crystal.

I have been a faithful reader of Rabbi Zahavy's columns for years, and I have found them to be thoughtful and provocative, as he is a creative and original thinker, who is grounded in our faith and tradition, but definitely thinks outside the box. He is a serious scholar and author on Talmud, scripture and rabbinic writings, so has the ability to synthesize various sources for novel insights. His writing is clear and frequently amusing, lending new insight to contemporary issues. I highly recommend that anyone with curiosity about the Jewish faith read this collection of Rabbi Zahavy's work.

The Rabbi openly tackles issues and questions that observant and traditional Jews ask. I enjoyed reading his take on things.
Overall I agreed with his answers...although I sensed quite a bit of liberal political correctness in his replies, especially when it comes to the issue of gender separation in the orthodox communities.
