Looking for Trouble, K'Barthan Series: Part 4 (and final)

The Pan of Hamgee doesn’t believe in miracles but if he’s going to save K’Barth it looks as if he might need one. He's not quite as alone as he thought. The punters from The Parrot and Screwdriver are right behind him and he has rescued three of his friends from the Grongolian Security Forces, who are now of course, three of the nation's most wanted, which doesn't make life easy. He even has something of a plan for once. It involves making peace with the Resistance, trying to resurrect the Underground movement, and toppling Lord Vernon. Now, The Pan just needs to keep his head down and maintain a low profile. He must be brave and clever and stay in control. That's going to be a first. But the hardest part will be staying alive long enough to put his plan into action. This book is the final part of a a completed science fiction series which is best enjoyed when read in sequence.Written in British English with a little light swearing.Suggested cinema rating: PG

A quick word with the author

Q - So, tell us about the K’Barthan Series. What made you write it? What makes it special?A - As a reader, I have always loved British satire and humor or humour. I love comedic sci fi and fantasy and I love funny; funny epic fantasy series like the Discworld novels and comedic sci fi like Douglas Adams totally floats my boat. But I also like a gripping tale that zips along quickly in the time honoured tradition of unputdownable adventure. And of course, I like genre fiction mashups; Douglas Adams meets StarTrek and James Bond - and a dash of romance (but no squelchy bits). Therefore, my cunning gambit was fantasy that was also science fiction and would surprise even me. I wanted a fast paced story and gripping tale but comedy in the tradition of all the great funny British authors. The K'Barthan series does have a deeper side. Sure on one level it's a light piece of witty comedy fiction but on another level it's about teamwork; team action in science fiction - or fantasy. Our heros and heroines work together across the series to bring down the indomitable forces of evil (bit of an untrendy epic fantasy trope there but I like it). You won't find standard mythic creatures in my sci fi - I couldn't face the deluge of emails I'd inevitably get from those who knew more about them than I do, telling me I'd got them wrong. However, you will find all sorts of quirky characters and interesting alien species. From six feet Swamp Things with antennae to cute furry creatures like the Blurpons, with their fluffy ears, big button eyes and penchant for extreme violence. The K’Barthan population has variety.Q – Should this series be read in order?A – Yes. A – The character development – and some of the technology – will make the most sense if it is. That said, the short series prequel can be read any time. The books go in this order:
  1. Unlucky Dip: Prequel
  2. Few Are Chosen, K’Barthan Series: Part 1
  3. The Wrong Stuff, K’Barthan Series: Part 2
  4. One Man: No Plan, K’Barthan Series: Part 3
  5. Looking For Trouble, K’Barthan Series: Part 4
Q – What is your favourite kind of Book? Would The K'Barthan Series fit on the list?A – Oh yes. I wrote it entirely for me. If anyone else likes it, that’s gravy. I love British humour, especially satire and parody in sci fi and fantasy: people like Pratchett and Adams. There’s so much texture and depth in their books. I think if you're funny you can be harder hitting and setting it all in a parallel reality helps.Q – Do you have a target reader?A – It's more a mind set and an approach to life I'm reaching out to. Sure, I wrote it with my (then) teenage nephew in mind - but to give you an idea; the oldest fan of the series I know of is in his 90s and the youngest is 10.

About the Author

M T McGuire enjoys the real world but wouldn't want to live here full time. That's why she writes books. She grew up, or at least, got bigger, half way up a windy down in Sussex. Her home was also the first location choice for Hogwarts, in the Harry Potter films, so maybe it's not so strange that she's ended up writing science fiction fantasy books. Perhaps there's something in the water up there, apart from chalk. She used to do stand up but sat down and started to write books when she got married. She now lives in Bury St Edmunds, in Suffolk, with a McOther, a McMini, a McCat and a selection of very silly cars. She hasn't found a way to make any of the cars fly, and none of them is fitted with ordnance like the ones in her books, but she and her team of evil scientists are working on that. Despite being over fifty now, and supposedly, an adult, M T checks all unfamiliar wardrobes for a gateway to Narnia. She hasn't found one so far but she lives in hope.

M T McGuire enjoys the real world but wouldn’t want to live there full time. That’s why she writes books. She grew up, or at least got bigger, halfway up a windy down in Sussex. Her home was also the first location choice for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, so maybe it’s not so strange that she’s ended up writing spec-fic. Perhaps there’s something in the water up there, apart from chalk.

After a short stint as a stand up comedienne, M T sat down, got married and moved to East Anglia. She now lives in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, with a McOther, a McMini, a McCat and a selection of very silly cars. She hasn’t found a way to make any of the cars fly, and none of them is fitted with ordnance, but she and her team of evil scientists are working on that.

M T would like to be able to tell you she's an NY Times best selling author but that would be lying. Some of her books have won Wishing Shelf Awards though, a bronze and a silver.

Despite being over fifty now and supposedly an adult, M T checks all unfamiliar wardrobes for a gateway to Narnia. She hasn’t found one so far but lives in hope.

If you've read any of her stuff, she'd like to say, 'thank you' and hopes you enjoyed it.

Kudos to Ms. McGuire for thinking up a fantastic, funny and suspenseful sci fi story. Each book in the series is a page-turner,and the whole series is highly recommended.

This is the final book of the trilogy + 1. You should read them in order, or you will be more confused than The Pan of Hamgee on an off day. The Pan has almost got the voices in his head sorted, (Cluck!) and he is resigned to dying on Saturday, but now he has the problem of staying alive till then, and the pub is running out of beer. It is something of a slip-sliding dash until the final clash at the wedding, but we all muddle through it to a HEA. Well, knowing The Pan, it might not be so EA, we'll just have to see about that. Worth the time to follow all four books.

This was a good story but I think stretching it out over four books was a bit much. I was very close to quitting after book three. If it didn't come to a conclusion at the end of book four I was ready to quit.

Great mix of twists and character development with action and fantasy and technology thrown in. Sharp writing and puns intertwine with some good ideas about how different kinds of "people" can all get along with more tolerance, respect and a shared vision of what a peaceful society looks like. Timely.

This final book in the four-book trilogy - I still think that's pretty funny but, like the story itself, you get more than you expect - finishes the series in style. This one is about trust. You know for certain just how bad some of the bad guys are but who can you trust? Trust M.T. McGuire. I'll be reading these again.

Comedy, sarcasm, emotions, honour - and brilliant flying cars that are just too wicked - read all four every hour of the day and night I could, depression when finished - that says it all really!

We left The Pan of Hamgee in dire straights at the end of Book 3. One of his friends is in desperate need of medical attention. Without it he's a gonner. This book guides us through the complexities of the politics of K'Barth and the Underground and Resistance movements working for freedom from the Grongolian oppressors. We find that not all Grongolians are wicked.
Ruth is due to marry the dreadful Lord Vernon who intends to become the new Architrave. Can The Pan rescue her and come into his own destiny? I'm not going to tell you but it's an exciting and bumpy ride.

The author has created a world here that we want to believe in and characters we variously detest, admire or even love. It's dotted with danger, humour, horror and romance. It’s oozing with charm but it’s not a sweet, chintzy charm. It’s charm with a side order of sarcasm and drizzled with attitude. You can't help but be drawn in. I loved every moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unreserved five out of five stars for this book.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2015
This book was an absolute joy to read. I said of the K’Barthan series part 3 that M T McGuire had come into her own as a writer, in this book it is even more so with knobs on. As I got towards the end of the book I found myself slowing down, a sure sign I didn’t want the book to end.
The action continues at a pace throughout the whole book. The characters jump off of the page, and whilst the story was more serious as the plotlines drew together, I was rarely without a grin on my face as I was reading.
If Douglas Adams had not passed and was still writing today then he would be hard pushed to write something as good as this. An unreserved five out of five stars for this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars but I'm glad I did
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2016
I can't remember where I found this series, but I'm glad I did. While you could see some of the bits coming from the very beginning, it was a fun read from start to finish.

The humour was largely kind and gentle, and the tale as a whole, while maybe being a little preachy, was refreshingly optimistic without being overly soppy.

And of course, there was cheese and pickle, and a well pulled pint - what more could you want ?
