Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Dreamlike was my second novel, which I wrote predominantly during NanoWriMo. I 'won' by writing over 50,000 words in the month of November. Which was a great effort, considering the years I spent writing on and off for my first book.

The concept for Dreamlike came to me one day when I was thinking about people and their fears. There didn't seem to be a good way to really overcome those fears, just time and facing them. So I thought to myself - what if there was a pill for that? Many fears are potentially dangerous to confront head on, so dreams seemed like a good approach. A shortcut even!

But of course I couldn't leave the premise at that, there had to be a consequence for the shortcut. A side effect. And my interest in mysteries and uncovering the truth wormed its way in and added a nice thread to tie everything together.

This book started with such a simple concept but grew so much as I progressed. I enjoyed the process, writing daily and keeping the narrative flowing. The more I got into the story, the more special it became. It took on a life greater than just a concept, and at the end of that month of writing I discovered a new ending for the book.

I didn't like this style of writing. I think if she was a stand up comedian, I would have enjoyed it being presented that way. I only read a few chapters and decided that I just couldn't get into this book. If you like comedy and satire, then I think you will like this one.

This book kept me interested and generally involved from the beginning. The main character, Amy, is a young woman with multiple phobias who uses her dreams to try to overcome her fears. As her dreams progress, Amy finds herself in danger as she begins to uncover criminal activity, some of it aimed at her. Her roommate, Samantha, puts her own life at risk as she jumps in to help Amy unravel a complex web of events.

I did have a couple of issues with the book. One, I thought there were areas where the plot could have been better developed. Also, I didn't see the point of having David in the book except, perhaps, to add a little potential romantic involvement. I felt his character added absolutely nothing to the book. I also began to grow bored with some of the dreams. I thought they could have been shortened. Good ending, however! Overall, I thought it was well worth the read.

I didn't catch the direction the book was going at first. There are parts of the book that you put yourself into along with the character and can't put the book down until she gets out of the latest dilemma. Good book!

I bought the book because the premise looked very interesting and for .99 what the heck. Oh boy. Generally the role of the reader is to suspend reality and flow with the writer, allowing him/her to take you where the story leads. Sometimes it's magical, sometimes it's a fight to follow the journey. This book was a fight. I don't believe the author knows a lot about dream analysis or the symbolism of the dream world, nor how long it takes for the conscious mind to understand, process and work out dreams, much less use that information to change one's life, but OK, I followed along. The writing style is OK and worked with the dream sequences but the dialog was trite and unnatural and really, the reality sequences were not believable and didn't add up. Interesting that the author is a gamer because that's exactly what this book was like; an endless game that moved you through levels with improbable scenarios, facile clues and no real satisfaction on attaining them. By dream 8 it got really ridiculous and from there to the end it was a mess: improbable, unresolved, dissatisfying. It left me with a "huh? what the hell was that all about?" A better title would be "Final Fantasy" - the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns (Hamlet) And no, I'm not reading the sequel.

This book was given me by Rebecca Hamilton in exchange for a fair and honest review
A good pacy book once it gets going . A different type of story line which shows a good insight into fears and phobias . The dialogue is good and I liked the fact that the story didn't need fleshing out. The twist in the tale comes in finding people don't really want our heroin to succeed in sorting her fears out. Quite a few twists and turns make the story not only interesting but enjoyable as well

Very good read which keeps you going until the end, however, I wasn't keen on the ending. I felt as if not enough things were explained but it certainly was a surprise. You couldn't have guessed it at all. All in all an extremely well written little book, well worth a read.
