City of Three Rivers Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

This epic historical novel is set in Dayton, Ohio, between the years of 1876 and 1924, and follows the life of one extraordinary woman during a time when floods repeatedly threaten to destroy the city she loves. It is also a time when women were confined to the roles of wives and mothers, but Susan chooses her own journey, pursuing her passion to become a healer.

When her father confesses to a less than perfect past and asks her to help him if he ever gets “another chance,” Susan begins to explore unconventional beliefs about life and death, and to uncover family secrets. But the mystery continues to unfold. Why do her nephew’s maps remind her of the maps her father used to draw? And why does a beautiful young artist seem strangely familiar? Susan’s quest takes her across the country to her father’s childhood home and leads her to a deeper understanding of herself and an unexpected way to help two people who have been searching for each other for a long time.

Grace Gillespie Carter has been writing for most of her life. When she was a girl she was inspired by Louise May Alcott’s "Little Women." She cut paper dolls out of Montgomery Ward catalogs and gave each doll a unique personality, with special talents and flaws. She invented stories, published a short story in "Wee Wisdom" when she was twelve, and at the age of fifteen, she won first prize in a writing contest sponsored by "Venture Magazine."

"City of Three Rivers" is an epic historical novel, set in Dayton, Ohio between the years of 1877 and 1924. Once again Grace created fictional family trees, characters, and relationships. She watched as a story emerged—one that fascinated her and seemed worth the telling—and soon she determined which characters she cared about the most, when she wanted the story to begin (and when to end) and what city it should take place in.

I loved this historical novel, based in Dayton, Ohio. It’s a family saga. From the first page, I was hooked. I think that the characters will stay with me for a long time - especially the main characters: Susan, Mathew, and Laura. I was so frustrated with Mathew’s inability to take his own path, separate from his twin. I'm very glad that he finally became his own true self. The book also gives nuanced views about combat in WWI, and hints at the idea of reincarnation.

I have never been to Dayton, Ohio, but I feel that I know part of its history now - the flooding, the Wright brothers, NCR, and glimpsing social norms in the 1876-1924 time period; weddings haven't always been such "over the top" affairs, and burials were quick. The book flows.

I enjoyed reading the historical parts about Dayton Ohio, but the romantic parts were often confusing and too sexually graphic. I would not recommend this book for a young person because of the sexual stuff and immoral behavior. It is too bad as the historical part was interesting and true. The chapters were titled by years and that was confusing because I had to keep looking back at the title to see what year I was reading about.

Kudos for Grace Gillespie Carter’s City of Three Rivers. This fascinating historical novel tracks the extraordinary life of Susan Burke--a woman who chose to buck tradition and follow her heart to become a nurse and healer. More than just a “slice of life”, Carter’s novel traces the relationships amongst several generations of Burke’s family members--spanning the Gay Nineties into the Roaring Twenties, as they explore life’s enduring questions involving love, marriage, birth, death, spirituality and immortality. Set against the backdrop of Dayton, Ohio, with its family farms, yet burgeoning industry, and the challenges presented by the flooding of three rivers surrounding the community, Carter gives us an insight into the joys and hardships and triumphs of everyday life. This well-written and beautifully crafted book is an engaging page-turner!

This beautifully written novel sweeps like a river through the lives, longings, and loves of this typical American city. An experience to treasure.
