D.J. Molles became a New York Times and USA today bestselling author while working full time as a police officer. He has since traded his badge for a keyboard to produce over 20 titles.

When he's not writing, he's taking steps to make his North Carolina property self-sustainable, and training to be at least half as hard to kill as Lee Harden (his most popular protagonist). Molles also enjoys playing his guitar and drums, drawing, cooking, and “shredding that green pow” on his Onewheel.

Most nights you can find him sitting on the couch surrounded by his dogs and family, trying to stream an hour of Netflix with his really sketchy satellite internet connection.

Have you ever read a series so good, so compelling, you never wanted it to end? Well this series was it for me. I wish the series kept going, but all good things must come to an end. I told myself I'd read this one slower, just to make the experience last longer, but I couldn't do that. Once I started there was no way I could stop.
I can say this one was by far the most thrilling out of all the books. I literally was hanging off my seat almost the entire time I was reading. I don't know how D.J. Molles was able to pull so many emotions out of me at one time or how with a snap of my fingers I wanted to toss the book across the room. That's how you know you're reading a great book.
This series was out of my normal reading material, but I'm so glad I picked them up. Lee's story and how he continues his mission when all else seems lost, is truly amazing. I've never read a character before like Lee. He never gives up. Ever. He pushes himself way beyond the limit all for the sake of his mission. I loved it.
All I can say is, read it. I really can't explain how else these series is just that good. I recommend at least trying it out because I know I couldn't stop once I read the first page of the first book. I hate it ended, but I'm hoping maybe we see more of Lee in the future.

Great characters and story line is very engaging!! Cant wait to finish the series!!

This is the 6th in a 6 book series. I absolutely loved the series. I have read quite a bit of this Post-Apocalyptic type genre with Zombie/Infected, whatever and really like the concept, so I am qualified to review the book - having read a LOT of this stuff, my opinion is probably worth something - but always subjective. That said....I liked the book and think it is a suitable/satisfying ending to a great overall story. There have been many reviews of this - and the 5th book - where it is suggested that sometime between the 4th and 5th books, Molles signed a deal with a publisher and is no longer writing for himself, and is now beholden to a publisher. I do not know if this is the case or not, but I do feel that some of the other reviews are valid. There is clearly a difference in approach to the 5th and 6th books. I feel like there is largely less action, and more dialogue/emotion in the characters. For the most part, I do not think this dialogue and the personal thoughts of the characters is helpful, necessary, or useful, but feel it is largely fluff/filler - maybe an attempt to make the characters more believable or to add some type of complexity layer to the characters. I don't think it is necessary - it is similar to a porn movie having a plot-line - look, it's a zombie book, no complex story line is needed. I personally do not care what the relationship between Capt. Harden and Angela is, and there is a LOT of Angela's personal thoughts, etc, here that I found really unnecessary - even boring. In truth there were more than a few passages/paragraphs that I totally just skimmed over - not even feeling it was worth my time. Molles also did some review in the middle of some of these passages - like we had to be reminded of how the character/situation/story line got to this point - hey, give the reader some credit for having a memory to remember how the story got here. But....see a couple of paragraphs, below.
Some of the action is really far-fetched - come on, you are reading zombie-like fiction here, what did you expect? - but always entertaining - Molles does do a great job with the action, and does it in just the right number of words - complete, yet not beaten to death -If you've read the series up to this point, and if you've liked it thus far (which, the fact that you are even reading this review would indicate that you have), I would say absolutely buy and read it. I do not regret it in the least.
One suggestion I would make to anyone writing these multi-book series that are released over a period of time: write a quick synopsis/review at the beginning of the next installment in the series to get the reader back up to speed with where we are in the story - a brief recap of the story, and particularly the characters. I actually read the first 3 books 3 times, and the 4th book twice. It had been quite some time between the third and fourth book, and I was cloudy on the storyline, so I re-read the first 3 books prior to reading the 4th one. Then, the fifth and sixth books came out without my knowledge, probably a full year (or more) had passed, and I found myself again somewhat foggy on the story, and felt I needed to re-read all of the first 4 books again. I enjoyed them again, but would have been satisfied with a synopsis of the story up to the 5th book or whatever just to jog my memory. This could even be done on Molles' website. Maybe this synopsis exists, but I could not find it. It's my own fault - I foresaw this happening, meant to make my own notes after book 4, but never did.
Anyway....yeah, I would definitely recommend it - I still feel it is probably the best post-apocalyptic series I have read. Enjoy.

I've read all 6 of D.J.Molles' post apocalyptic series and enjoyed them all. There is a glut of zombie apocalypse series out, I've tried many, truly been impressed by a few (my next book is the latest Awakening novel), and realized why I did or didn't like them. They need a twist, here the secret government project to ensure civilization outlasts an apocalypse. The second is the characters, Capt. Lee Harnden kits part of Project Hometown, and slowly becomes a leader in the aftermath. He is joined by comrades, people he's saved or saved him, and fights against a corrupt pseudo POTUS, a religious cult (they always think they're so right), and Duke, a dog he saved. All the characters are well written and believable, some are betrayed, some manipulate, others cower, and no one gets out unchanged. You know, kinda like life.

I guess I like this because it's viable to me, the way I think things would go. Religious zealots? Check. Military commanders, unsure of their allegiance? Check. Brave survivors? Check. Weasels? Yup. Truly bad people. Uh huh. Zombies? Millions, but not the biggest plot point.

No, the biggest threat to man is man. People die, some who deserve it, some who don't, just like life. I like that the Spec Ops people aren't supermen, they are very good at what they do but they get messed up, mentally and physically. Just like real life.

So, like well written escape fiction? You'll like this, get to know Lee, Angela, Abe, Devon, and Duke, the zombie sniffing guard dog. You'll be glad you did.

I purchased this series after finishing the Surviving the Dead series. I have read a huge number of novels in this genre and truly enjoy the military focus with the undead really playing second stage to characters driving to keep a sense of order and patriotism in a world gone bad. DJ Molles has done a very solid job in keeping my interest in reading the series from start to finish without my usual habit of being in two or three different novels at the same time. The end of Extinction certainly leaves the opening for follow up in a number of directions and I hope to see the next installment soon. As an unlimited subscriber I don't purchase as many books as in the past but will continue with this series if it continues. Very solid read, great characters and in the vein of the walking dead, don't get too invested in the long term survival of those you grow fond of. His world is a cruel and heartless place.
Excellent read, start with volume one and work through to this. No disappointments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great end to a great series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2016
**MINOR SPOILERS**

Although this is a review for The Remaining: Extinction, it can also be taken as a review of the series as well.

Really enjoyed this, but as others have mentioned, I think the story is far from concluded in my opinion. The characters have all completed their arcs as such, but I'd like to know more about other pockets of resistance around the US.
One thing I'd say about the series is it's hard to imagine the areas he's referring to, but a Google map search allowed me to get a feel for the key locations that I could properly pinpoint. I'd have also liked things to go reasonably well just once ......

Well worth buying for your Kindle - I managed to read through the whole series in one holiday.

Sehr spannende Geschickt - ich würde allerdings eher zur englischen Hörbuch-version raten - diese ist sogar besser als die geschrieben Variante. (Deutsche Übersetzung ist grausam, Finger weg!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good series, sorry to see it end
Reviewed in Australia on May 23, 2016
This series was a pretty realistic apocalypse zombie tale. Yes the hero is lucky at times and a legend continuously, but there are times he takes a loss and has human moments. I am very sorry that it's come to an end in this book, but all good things must come to an end, and the author timed it well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and intense
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2015
Molles never let's up throughout this series. I've never experienced such an adreline rush reading a book. Like The Walking Dead the author focuses on the real threat - other survivors and it's this that adds the drama. He has a nice twist with the infected/Zombies; it effects people in different ways. At times it can be a little bit 'flag wavey - send in the Marines' in an American Snipper kind of way but this is a minor criticism. It's well written and fast paced and I found my self reading it into the small hours. Great series I'm just sorry it's all over.
