Chipped Black Nail Polish Kindle Edition
In New Jersey during the summer of 1989, an awkward thirteen-year-old who was obsessed with weird music fell head-over-heels in love with the coolest post-punk rock girl he had ever met. Nicholas was insecure. He was a daydreamer, wishing for romance when he was told, over and over, that he could not have it. He was a toy, pulled and pushed, wanted and used, dragged along yet held at a distance. Nicholas fell in with the out crowd, and loved every minute of it. He fell in love and got left behind, but not before she changed him forever.
This is an irrational, emotional love story for the teenager inside all of us. The music is loud, and you’re about to be pushed into the pit.
What some people are saying…
“I should have put you in therapy.” – my mother.

“Finally, a title that doesn't scare people off. Not like the first book, The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself.” – Kim Gray, publicist

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2015Being a 13 almost 14 year old and feeling like you don’t fit in is the worst feeling in the world, but if you find the right music…music that makes you feel alive and free, as it connects you to the deepest part of yourself AND you fall in love…being considered a weirdo ceases to be a restraint on your happiness and your sense of belonging.
Chipped Black Nail Polish is the terse retelling of Nicholas Tanek’s wild, fun yet dangerous, New Jersey Hard Core Summer in 1989, between 8th and 9th grade when he meets Kim who is mentioned in his first book The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself. Although mention of her was brief in that story, I remember thinking, “I want to know more about THAT girl and THAT relationship…”
My own heart skipped a beat as I read about the fated moment Nicholas met Kim while he sifted through vinyl records in a music store. I even swooned a little reading how he fell in love for the first time with her, the girl who introduced to him to the coolest parts of who he is, thus starting his epic love affair with the Punk-Rock Music way of life.
I related to how easy it was for Nicholas to fall head over heels with Kim especially when she told him not to. I even found myself cheering him on while he believed with his whole heart that he could be the one to save her from despair and help her heal all of her wounds. That is, how teenagers approach love after all.
Kim introduced Nicholas to a set of friends who were quirky, yet conventional to each other. Each is written and portrayed as multi-layered characters with beautiful flaws and hardships that adults couldn’t or simply wouldn’t even try to understand: I laughed out loud. No, I cackled out loud when Nicholas’s friend Kevin joins him on the scene. I can honestly say they one-upped me as the Grand Master of the crank call. My eyes filled with tears, when his friends Di and Quintin reminded me of a time, not so long ago, before the internet and way before social media, when the world was less accepting of gays and lesbians than it is now and how racism and racial slurs was an accepted form of bullying.
I’ve had to read this story twice so I could digest my own emotional memories of how I once felt about being the odd girl out and then finding a group of kids who embraced and accepted me.
Nicholas Tanek’s nostalgic memories and references to things like mixed tapes, Aqua Net hairspray (I still keep a jumbo can under my bathroom sink) sneaking out to meet a teenage love, epic crank calls as an art form and MTV’s 120 minutes woke up my inner teenager and thrust me right back into the memory of the craziness I once (or twice) disguised as the magic of summer love. This quick read/adventurous story made me miss the thrill of climbing out of a second story window to go meet a boy in the middle of the night and not get caught while I rekindled my love of what others thought was out of touch music.
Once again, (as he did in his first book) Nicholas Tanek proves that, everything that glitters may not be gold but the spark we see in someone we love is just as, if not more stunning and valuable than the actual precious metal.
What I find interesting is at the heart of this self proclaimed “weirdo”, is a Knight—in what appears to be tarnished armor, a hero, a sort-of-savior with a kind heart, and a lover.
The best thing I have learned from Nicholas via his writing is: sometimes, we need to see the imperfect beauty in another when nobody else does, so we can learn to embrace our own beautiful selves when the world fails to look our way.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2015Sometimes I read a book I love so much I don't know where to start. There are not enough words to describe why I love it. This is the way I feel about Chipped Black Nail Polish by Nicholas Tanek The story of first love, teenage awkwardness, music (lots of it), and finding the confidence to be yourself, is the perfect prequel to The Coolest way to Kill Yourself. Set in the summer of 1989, Nicholas is a shy teenager who rides his bike to the record store looking for a new favorite album but instead finds the effortlessly cool, Kim. As the summer rolls on you see Nicholas break out of his shell and fall in love. Kim takes him on different adventures and introduces him to Di, Gina, and Quentin. You will love these people, along with Kevin, Nicholas' friend who always has the perfect thing to say to make you laugh. It is a brilliantly written story, that is smart, funny, and endearing. Chipped Black Nail Polish captures what it is to be a teenager. It doesn't matter if you were a teenager in 1989, because the same feelings of being weird, awkward, the odd one out and first love, transcends no matter what year it is. When you find those friends or other people who accept and embrace you, those are the ones you don't forget.
Nicholas Tanek is one of those few authors that you come across whose words and writing transports you into the story and and makes you feel everything in it. Bike rides, music, punk rock clubs, trips to New York, you are with Nicholas, Kim, Di, Gina, Quintin, and Kevin every step of the way. I read a quote the other day that said, "Some books you read. Some books you enjoy, Some books swallow you up, heart and soul." Nicholas Tanek's Chipped Black Nail Polish is a book that will definitely touch you heart and soul.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2015Omg! I loved it! I was immediately drawn into this book. Nicholas has a unique writing style. This story was absolutely mindblowing! It is about when he was 13 years old living in New Jersey and he meets and falls in love for the first time. This girl he falls for is a punk rock chick and a bit older(3yrs). He right away falls for her uniqueness and they share the love of music and being different from others. I can actually relate to some of the era he is writing about late 80's era. Except, I was the aquanet, bighair disco dancing queen, Lol! He takes us through his love journey using music and movies to explain the openness of his mind. I loved it!! Kim (name of the puck chick) opens up his sexual desires. She is a very domineering individual and actually makes Nicholas see things more for what it is. He experiences many first with her, sex, drugs, concerts etc. I find that so intoxicating to read about their epic adventures. I am a California girl and reading about how some New Jersey kids partied and evolved with puck rock music was very resourceful and exciting. So, I give this book a 5 star because of his quirkiness and individualism towards music and punk era. I enjoyed reading it emmensly! Great Job again Nicholas!! I am so looking forward to your future reads. I am your newiest fangirl *winks*

5.0 out of 5 stars it was being cool, it was being a weirdo
I have just taken a journey back to 1989, where if you were a teenager then, you will know, there was no internet to entertain us. Life was completely different back then. Music in the eighties was loud with unusual band names. Punk rock didn't just mean music to Nicholas, it was being cool, it was being a weirdo, it was to embrace life and be proud of who you were. Why did we as teenagers cared what people thought, is it not our individuality that defines us as a person, to make our mark in this life. Nicholas did not see himself as one of the cool kids, nor did he lead an exciting life, that all changed when he met Kim. There is a lot of firsts for Nicholas in this story. His life was changed forever.
This book tells you about a young lady or punk rock queen as, Nicholas would say, who shows Nicholas a different kind of life. His summer of 1989 was a wild ride that he never wanted to end and as a reader to be honest even though I gasped a lot at some of the things they got up to, I too never wanted his happiness to end no matter what I thought about how wrong some situations were.
Nicholas fell in love for the first time in his life and he knew that no matter what happened he couldn't stop himself from loving Kim. Parents will tell you, that you are heading for heart break but being a teenager, we believe they can't possibly know or just don't care. Nicholas wasn't a man of the world, he was a New Jersey weirdo, learning about life, with a little help from his friends.
Oh how I have laughed reading the conversations between him and his best friend Kevin and the maxi pads comment by Kim and what Nicholas thought when she said that, I laughed so much.Teenage thinking is so humorous but it reminds us how things are so fresh and new, when growing up, exciting adventures to be had, whether it's a first date, your first kiss, even for some your first time at a concert and being thrown into the pit. What's a pit? read and find out.
Actually while thinking about questions, I have one for the Author. What are monkey balls? now I know what you lot are thinking, eh! she doesn't know what monkey balls are, of course I know that, but these monkey balls were not written in the context.
Life was not easy in the eighties so much racism and homophobia. I mean it still exists today but back then there were no gay rights. People could of made racial comments, hurtful comments but Nicholas didn't care who was black or white, gay or lesbian, he never judged. I wish more people could have been like him.
This book will have you thinking back to your teenage years, I think we all have done something crazy as teenagers. Tried things that we shouldn't have but it all goes down to experience, some will live and learn by their mistakes. Nicholas always knew he was different from what society calls normal but that's okay, it has made him the man he is today and in my opinion he is a brilliant writer. I wasn't only drawn to the story but I connected with it too. To smile while reading a book, then laugh and go through certain emotions as sadness can only be a credit to the Author to make you feel all these.
This book is a must read. I will definitely be recommending it. Thank you Nicholas Tanek for taking me through a story of New Jersey's punk rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book... blew me away!!!
Chipped black nail polish was in my top five books to read this year and I loved every second of reading it.
It is set in the summer of 1989 when Nicholas met his first love Kim, this book shares their summer together and their love of music. Through this book Nicholas paints a vivid picture of what he experienced, he transports you back to the music scene and culture of 1989, so much so you can imagine yourself being there with him. It also has an important message throughout it of being yourself, accepting yourself and not losing yourself in the crowd, being different is ok.
Another fantastic 5* book from Nicholas!!! I would recommend it in a heartbeat.
Thank you yet again for sharing your story with us and showing us it's cool to be different we just need to accept ourselves just the way we are!!
